Half a grand worth of Christmas lights, Overlook has a new crime ...

Hi, North Portland! I'm back after two weeks in Louisiana. Here's the latest news out of North Portland.

Mayor Sam Adams has named longtime news photographer Julie Keefe the city?s first-ever creative laureate. Keefe has worked for the Skanner News since 1990 and is curating a selection of her photographs for a 2013 exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society. Keefe has run her own company, Julie Keefe Photography, and also a joint venture with her husband John Klicker, KeefeKlicker Photography, in North Portland since the late 1980s.

The Oregonian's photo department brings you pictures of a North Geneva Street home that is especially lit up this time of year. The family says their electric bill is about $500 for the month of December.

St. Johns Review reporter Jim Speirs has published Tales of North Portland, Vol. 5. You can buy a copy for $13.95 from Copy Pilot, 4784 North Lombard; Kenton Station, 8303 North Denver Avenue; or St. Johns Deli, 7920 North Lombard Street.

Portland Public Schools delayed the timeline for the Jefferson cluster enrollment balancing, reports Nicole Dungca.

Thursday, the Portland City Council will hold a one-hour session about new apartments and parking. The meeting starts at 4 p.m. in the city council chambers, 1221 Southwest 4th Avenue. The bureau of planning and sustainability staff will present research and analysis. You can check out the report online. The council will take public comment. The Overlook neighborhood is also looking for information about the Pacific madrone tree that is in Madrona City Park. University of Portland?s quarterly Portland Magazine earned a 2012 national bronze medal for writing excellence from the international Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the premier trade association for higher education public relations, marketing and fundraising efforts. Edited by Brian Doyle since 1991, the magazine has won a CASE national medal for 19 consecutive years.

The Skanner reports that Richard Brown needs help identifying people in two old photographs. Brown acquired the photos taken at a local tavern in 1943, including one of jazz legend Duke Ellington celebrating his 55th birthday. Brown hopes to trace the names of the people.
