Link between fast food and depression confirmed

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? A new study along the same lines as its predecessors shows how eating fast food is linked to a greater risk of suffering from depression. This study has been published in the Public Health Nutrition journal

According to a recent study headed by scientists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada, eating commercial baked goods (fairy cakes, croissants, doughnuts, etc.) and fast food (hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza) is linked to depression.

Published in the Public Health Nutrition journal, the results reveal that consumers of fast food, compared to those who eat little or none, are 51% more likely to develop depression.

Furthermore, a dose-response relationship was observed. In other words this means that "the more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression," explains Almudena S?nchez-Villegas, lead author of the study.

The study demonstrates that those participants who eat the most fast food and commercial baked goods are more likely to be single, less active and have poor dietary habits, which include eating less fruit, nuts, fish, vegetables and olive oil. Smoking and working more than 45 hours per week are other prevalent characteristics of this group.

A long-term study

With regard to the consumption of commercial baked goods, the results are equally conclusive. "Even eating small quantities is linked to a significantly higher chance of developing depression," as the university researcher from the Canary Islands points out.

The study sample belonged to the SUN Project (University of Navarra Diet and Lifestyle Tracking Program). It consisted of 8,964 participants that had never been diagnosed with depression or taken antidepressants. They were assessed for an average of six months, and 493 were diagnosed with depression or started to take antidepressants.

This new data supports the results of the SUN project in 2011, which were published in the PLoS One journal. The project recorded 657 new cases of depression out of the 12,059 people analysed over more than six months. A 42% increase in the risk associated with fast food was found, which is lower than that found in the current study.

S?nchez-Villegas concludes that "although more studies are necessary, the intake of this type of food should be controlled because of its implications on both health (obesity, cardiovascular diseases) and mental well-being."

The impact of diet on mental health

Depression affects 121 million people worldwide. This figure makes it one of the main global causes of disability-adjusted life year. Further still, in countries with low and medium income it is the leading cause.

However, little is known about the role that diet plays in developing depressive disorders. Previous studies suggest that certain nutrients have a preventative role. These include group B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and olive oil. Furthermore, a healthy diet such as that enjoyed in the Mediterranean has been linked to a lower risk of developing depression.

Appliance Repair Insurance | Cap1sucks Home Improvement

Repair of equipment are essentially the payment of insurance premiums in advance for equipment service or major repair in your home. But the problem with any insurance is the fact that you might not have a problem and some people see this as a waste of money. But I have to disagree. With this type of service plan in place, you pay for peace of mind. They are also called home warranty.

Here is how a protection plan home warranties work.

If your washing machine, waste disposal or heating and cooling system is damaged or malfunctions, you have to do is contact the company you buy the protection plan and they will be a technician come to your house and diagnose the problem. Most companies have a service charge call is sometimes called a deductible.

Who needs this type of coverage?

Homeownership is an excellent candidate for this type of warranty plans. First, the new owners are generally short of money, so the threat of having to pay for costly repairs HVAC is too much for them to handle. Repair or replacement of heating systems and cooling systems can cost thousands of dollars.

How much compensation insurance costs of equipment?

The cost of this type of service can vary from plan to plan and from state to state. Premiums are generally cost a few hundred dollars to just under one thousand dollars. The price difference is because of what you need and cover the area you live in. If you only have a closed primary system, your premium will be much less than the cost to cover all equipment, systems and something similar.

Got The Health and fitness Blues? Try These Easy Ideas ...

Training Your Way To Some Much healthier You

Too many people approach their fitness goals hesitantly. In many cases, they do not how to start, or simply lack the motivation to start. Motivating yourself can be as easy as making your workouts fun. The following tips may help you begin.

Workouts are not just about losing weight, they are about having fun. Try adding music to your workout to liven things up and make it that much more enjoyable. Your favorite tunes can be powerful motivational assistants that help you power through your exercise. Music will really help get you moving and improve your workouts. When you incorporate music into your workout routine, you will put yourself in the right frame of mind to enjoy your workout.

If you do not find ways to make exercising fun, it will be a lot harder to stick to your workout goals. Group activities can help make your workout less isolated and more fun. Recruit a buddy or several to accompany you on lunchtime strolls or trips to the workout facility. Making your workout more social can help you reconnect with friends and make your workout more fun than when you go at it alone. Working out with a pal can add elements of fun to an exercise plan, helping you to forget you are working out at all.

Workout video games can be a great weight loss tool. Exercising with a video game feels more like playing and having a good time than working out. If you are doing exercises that are enjoyable and fun, you will reduce the risk of getting tired and calling it quits.

Go shopping for exercise clothes to get your mind in the right place to exercise. Purchase exercise clothing that will help you feel good about your appearance. There are many styles available. Some workout gear can be both flattering to your figure and a lot of fun. Make it your chance to be creative! Don?t be afraid to be adventurous! You should choose exercise outfits that you like to wear so that you will feel good about going to the gym or working out.

Try to avoid doing the same exercises each day because, at some point, you just won?t feel like doing them anymore. Your exercise routine can come to a grinding halt if you allow yourself to get bored. Mix up your workout regimens in order to maximize your motivation and keep workouts fun and interesting. This is a vital point, because prolonged breaks from working out tend to make restarting far more difficult.

As we have just stated, tennis apparel is something that cannot be dismissed ? or at least should never be ignored. At times there is simply way too much to even try to cover in one go, and that is important for you to realize and take home. But I wanted to pause for a moment so you can reflect on the value of what you have just read. In light of all that is offered, and there is a lot, then this is a great time to be reading this. The last outstanding areas for discussion may be even more important. You should always give yourself a reward if you have done a good job. A reward provides the motivation you will need to complete the next step of your journey. You can treat yourself when you reach a milestone in fitness. However, do not go overboard with the rewards. Fitness is a reward in itself.

Many believe exercise is little more than an irritating task, however, it can be much more enjoyable than that. A variety of methods can be applied to make exercising more fun. This article contains the advice you need to develop a fun exercise routine.

New study shows birth weight may identify future metabolic risk in girls

Chevy Chase, MD Heavier female babies are more likely to develop diabetes and related metabolic risks when they grow up compared with their male counterparts, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM).

The incidence of early onset type 2 diabetes has been rising in stride with the epidemic of childhood obesity. Previous studies have shown that cardiovascular risk factors in childhood and adults are associated with birth weight. This study investigated the associations between birth weight and body fat distribution in early childhood with future metabolic risk factors such as obesity, insulin resistance and high blood pressure.

"What happens to a baby in the womb affects future heart disease and diabetes risk when the child grows up," said Rae-Chi Huang, MD, PhD, of The University of Western Australia in Perth and the study's lead author. "We found that female babies are particularly prone to this increased risk and females who are at high risk of obesity and diabetes-related conditions at age 17 are showing increased obesity as early as 12 months of age."

In this study, researchers examined 1,053 17-year-olds from an Australian birth cohort. Follow-up of study participants took place at eight intervals between one and 17 years of age. In addition to birth weight and BMI, researchers took measurements of blood pressure and levels of insulin, blood glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol. The 17 year old girls with the greater waist circumference, triglycerides, insulin, and lower HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol) were also heavier from birth with consistently higher BMI thereafter. In contrast, birth weight had no statistical impact on metabolic risk factors in males.

"These findings are significant because in our modern western society, we are seeing increased maternal obesity and gestational diabetes, which means there will also be a rise in female newborns that are born large for their age," said Huang. "Our results can be applied to public health messages targeting both maternal health and measures in early infancy regarding the prevention of childhood obesity and its consequences."

###

Other researchers working on the study include: Trevor Mori, Sally Burrows, Chi Le Ha, Wendy Oddy, Carly Herbison, and Lawrence Beilin of The University of Western Australia; and Beth Hands of Notre Dame University in Western Australia.

The article, "Sex Dimorphism in the Relation between Early Adiposty and Cardio-Metabolic Risk in Adolescents," appears in the June 2012 issue of JCEM.

"Our results can be applied to public health messages targeting both maternal health and measures in early infancy regarding the prevention of childhood obesity and its consequences."

Lower death risk with heart bypass vs. angioplasty

(AP) ? Older patients with clogged heart arteries may have a little lower death risk over time if they get bypass operations instead of angioplasty and stents to fix the problem, new research suggests.

It's not the kind of study that gives conclusive evidence, but doctors say it gives a "real world" look at how people fare in ordinary practice. As such, it could tip the balance toward surgery for patients considering the choice, especially because research already shows bypass gives a better and longer lasting result for people with multiple blockages.

In a bypass operation, doctors move healthy blood vessels from other parts of the body to detour around clogged arteries supplying blood to the heart. Angioplasty treats the problem via a tube pushed through a blood vessel. A tiny balloon is inflated to flatten the clog and a mesh scaffold, a stent, is placed to prop the artery open.

Researchers compared these approaches using records on 190,000 Medicare patients with two or three blockages ? the largest study ever of this issue. Death rates were similar one year after either treatment. But after four years, nearly 21 percent of the angioplasty patients had died versus about 16 percent of those who had bypass surgery.

Results were discussed Tuesday at an American College of Cardiology conference in Chicago and published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

In the United States, more than a million operations or procedures are done each year to treat clogged arteries, and the study "provides comprehensive, large-scale, national data" to help doctors and patients decide which treatment is best, Dr. Susan Shurin said in a statement. She is acting director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which sponsored the study.

Comparative effectiveness studies like this one are taking on greater importance as more attention turns to the cost of health care.

Researchers used databases kept by the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons on 86,244 people who had bypass surgery and 103,549 others who had angioplasty between 2004 and 2007. They used fancy statistical adjustments to try to compensate for differences in the groups that might affect the results.

They found bypass to give a survival advantage even when they considered factors such as sex, race, age, and conditions like diabetes.

"Everything lines up" in favor of surgery, said study leader Dr. William Weintraub of Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Del. "We were frankly surprised by that."

Still, researchers say differences in the overall health of people who had surgery versus the less drastic procedure could account for some of the results. They say angioplasty remains a good and safe option for many people.

"You're not making a mistake if you still have angioplasty," especially if you have only one or two blockages, said Dr. Kirk Garratt of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. He is a spokesman for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, doctors who do angioplasties.

There are tests to help decide whether one treatment will be better than another, but "in general, doctors do it intuitively" based on how frail patients look, how easily they walk across the room, how firmly they shake your hand, said Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a health outcomes research specialist at Yale University.

The new study "nudges you a little closer" to favoring bypass, but because of the caveats, "in the end, it says it is a close call," he said.

The fact bypass gives a longer-lasting result is a selling point ? it means fewer repeat procedures, said Dr. Michael Crawford, chief of clinical cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco.

"Some patients buy that and want to go for the long term. Others, it's a tough sell," he said.

The real message is how safe both procedures are, said Dr. Vince Bufalino of Advocate Health Care, a 100-doctor cardiology group that serves 10 hospitals in the Chicago area.

"We still think a traditional operation is excellent" for people with multiple blockages, said Bufalino, an American Heart Association spokesman.

Review: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City | Video Games ...

It?s no secret that Capcom wants Resident Evil to be Call of Duty. So, while some took the announcement of the squad-based third-person shooter Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City as a return to the Outbreak experiment, many others saw hiring SOCOM developers Slant Six as an obvious step in the process of turning the once reigning horror franchise into a military shooter. Once people got a look at the four-player cooperative campaign though, Left 4 Dead became the obvious reference point. It turns out that RE:ORC borrows liberally from all of these things, but it?s also its own strange beast.

The premise is an alternate timeline, non-canonical take on Resident Evil 2?s iconic Raccoon City outbreak, with the main campaign following the exploits of the Umbrella Security Service that has been sent in to cover up the evil corporation?s biological research. Of course, things go wrong, and a zombie outbreak erupts. It?s up to you and your ragtag team to destroy incriminating evidence, kill invading U.S. Spec Ops soldiers, and to avoid joining the ranks of the undead yourself. The big draw for fans is clearly the?privilege?of experiencing the series? high point from the viewpoint of the bad guys, with cameos from everyone from Leon to Nemesis.

In practice, the game plays a lot like a third-person Left 4 Dead, albeit it with the more tactical approach you?d expect from Slant Six. Specifically, the playable characters each represent a certain class, i.e. ?Medic? or ?Sniper,? and you need to coordinate your abilities to survive. In fact, it wouldn?t be too much of a stretch to say the game more or less utilizes Team Fortress 2?s class framework, simply just giving ?names to ?Heavy? and ?Scout.? The Valve comparisons don?t stop there though, as an enemy type is introduced that looks like an Alien facehugger, but quickly shows itself to be more like Half-Life?s headcrab, latching onto scientists and causing them to attack you.

As long as you aren?t bothered by all of the similarities to other properties, there is fun to be had with Operation Raccoon City. The story takes you from the labs of Dr. Birkin through the streets of one of horror?s most beloved towns, stopping to at least nod at most plot points from Resident Evil 2 and 3. The campaign is pretty short, at just about 6 hours across seven missions, but downloadable content coming in the near future promises to add another storyline from the Spec Ops perspective. Ultimately, the single-player is interesting, but unremarkable in the current TPS climate? as long as you play online.

As previously stated, the game is squad-based, which means that any of the four slots not filled by an online player will be controlled by a bot. There is no other way to say this: teammate A.I. is laughably atrocious. Your squad-mates will do everything in their power to halt your progress through the game, including (but not limited to), standing impassably in doorways, relentlessly blocking your line of fire, refusing to heal you and themselves, and getting stuck in the environment, thus forcing you to go ahead alone in a game balanced for cooperation. Do not buy this game if you do not have the ability to play online.

In its defense,?Operation Raccoon City?does have quite a bit of value for those that put time into its multiplayer components. You gain experience and unlock new weapons and abilities for your characters, which you can then take online in a variety of modes. The modes are pretty self-explanatory, including Team Attack, Survival, and Deathmatch, but ?Heroes Mode? is particularly interesting, allowing you to take control of the protagonists from Resident Evil history like Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. The DLC ?Nemesis Mode? is exclusive to the Xbox 360, and combines deathmatch with the ability to control the titular hulking monster.

The great thing about the multiplayer is that it allows the unique features of the game to really shine. For example, being shot will make your character bleed, attracting zombies to your position. This makes wounding foes just as important as killing them, as you can use the impartial zombies as a tool against the opposing team. Furthermore, zombies can infect players, turning them into zombies if they aren?t treated with an item unique to one class and occasional drops. This adds an element to the title that sets it apart from Left 4 Dead and other online shooters.

Unfortunately, there are a few wrinkles that temper the positives. Even without the dead-weight computer allies, there are a number of glaring technical issues with the game that aren?t going away any time soon. First and foremost is the?embarrassing?amount of bugs that need to patched as soon as possible. As of the time of this writing, there are 16 pages of reported bugs in Capcom-Unity?s official thread, which is apparently meant to act as a majority of the game?s testing. The fact is that Capcom released an unfinished game, and is now using early adopters as testers.

You can always go to the above link to read the entire litany of issues, but for completion?s sake I will go over the ones I personally encountered in my time with the game. The most common was glitched animations, as characters skipped frames and occasionally teleported into position. Similarly, there were multiple occasions in which character models clipped through the environment, or just plain got stuck in a wall. Event flag activation is also strangely spotty, with doors that sometimes don?t open, events that don?t trigger, and elevators that refuse to leave. I also encountered occasional lag when online, but, as always, that could just as easily be beyond anyone?s control.

Some of the apparently cut corners are visible in other areas as well. The game is never downright ugly, but there are a noticeable lack of details in many areas other than the main characters. The blood effects for defeated enemies are a strange case, as there is entirely too much of it when most foes drop, and it boils away in a strange animation that doesn?t have any canonical precedent. Melee animations are awkward and stiff as well, although some of the instant kill animations are cool. Ultimately, there are just a lot of areas?from the grenade effects to the voice acting?that just cry out for a bigger budget and more development time.

I think it?s clear by now that?Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City?has a lot of problems. From the glitches to the content that is still in development, it?s easy to see that Slant Six just wasn?t done with the game when it was forced out the door. But for what ?it?s worth, the retail product is fun when it works, and offers a lot for fans of the series willing to accept another non-horror entry in the decreasingly scary world Capcom has built. Given a best-case scenario, the developers will be able to iron out the worst of the bugs still infesting the game and deliver enough DLC to justify the price of entry to a mostly online experience.

Pros:

  • Fun with friends
  • Interesting alternate take on series lore

Cons:

  • Buggy
  • Brain-dead?A.I.
  • Short campaign

This game was purchased for review and played to completion in about 6 hours. Another 6 hours were spent with the multiplayer. The title was played on PS3, but is also available for Xbox 360. It will release on May 18th, 2012 for PC.

(AP) ? Well, this looks familiar. Kentucky is back in a regional final. So is Baylor.

The top-seeded Wildcats moved another step closer to the only goal that matters in the Bluegrass State, shaking off a rather quiet night from freshman star Anthony Davis to put away stubborn Indiana 102-90 at the South Regional on Friday.

Next up for Kentucky: Those neon-clad Bears, who advanced to their second regional final in three years with a 75-70 victory over Xavier.

"We're just looking forward to go a little farther and make a little history," said Baylor's Quincy Acy, pointing toward Sunday's game at the Georgia Dome.

Kentucky coach John Calipari knows a national title is expected ? no, demanded ? of his team. Anything less would be considered a disappointment, at least among the Wildcat faithful.

Calipari would prefer his young team simply enjoy the ride.

"I want them to have fun," he said. "I don't want them to feel all this. It seems there's only one team that's not allowed to lose in this tournament, and that's us. It's not true, and I don't want them feeling all of that."

The Wildcats (35-2) sure looked as if they were having fun against Indiana, which got into a running contest with a team that was a little faster, a little stronger and just a little too good.

Kentucky finished with its most points since a 108-58 victory over Marist in the season opener.

"I like a game like that," Calipari said. "I can't stand a game in the 50s. Can't stand coaching it, can't stand watching it."

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 24 points, Doron Lamb 21 and three of their teammates ? not Davis, mind you ? were in double figures. With that, the Wildcats dispatched the team that beat them back in early December.

"I feel like we did a pretty good job," said Kentucky's Darius Miller, who added 19 points. "So did Indiana. It was a very intense game. It was up and down for the most part. It was a fun game to be a part of, the way that both teams played."

Davis wasn't his usual dominating self after picking up two early fouls. He finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, so it was left to another of Kentucky's super freshmen to take the starring role.

Kidd-Gilchrist had a double-double, also snatching 10 rebounds.

"In the huddles during timeouts, Michael was the guy firing us up," teammate Twany Beckham said. "It showed with his play."

Marquis Teague chipped in with 14 points and Terrence Jones 12.

Christian Watford had 27 points to lead the Hoosiers (27-9), who beat Kentucky 73-72 before Christmas but ended a comeback season with a loss to their border rival. Still, there was nothing to ashamed of, coming up two victories shy of the Final Four after winning a total of 28 games the previous three seasons.

Clearly, Indiana has regained its usual place among the college basketball bluebloods under coach Tom Crean.

"I know when I first got here it was rough for this program," guard Victor Oladipo said. "We've been through a lot of ups and downs. Now that we've brought it all together, it's a bright future for this program."

But Big Blue is moving on this year.

"They're a really good team," Crean said. "They've got a lot of guys. They've got a guy coming off the bench (Miller) who's going to be a first-round draft pick."

Indiana's freshman star, Cody Zeller, had 20 points, while Oladipo provided a spark in the backcourt with 15 before fouling out. Kidd-Gilchrist just kept pounding the ball inside, drawing foul after foul on the Hoosiers, then knocking down the free throws. He went 10-for-10 at the line.

He wasn't the only one making free throws. Kentucky was a deadeye 35-of-37 at the line, compared to 13-of-17 for the Hoosiers.

"We were always playing uphill," Crean said. "We had some guys playing on fumes. That game took a lot out of everybody, no question about that."

Calipari shrugged off any suggestion that his team might be a little tired after such a run-and-gun game in the regional semifinals.

"When you're playing at this time of the year, you've got more energy than you need," the coach said. "This team is in great shape."

In Baylor's win, Quincy Acy picked up the slack for his roommate. The 6-foot-7 senior had a double-double on a lackluster night for sharpshooting Brady Heslip.

"I think I got a little of that magic from him," Acy said.

The Baylor post players were not double-teamed most of the game and Acy took advantage of it to the tune of 20 points and 15 rebounds. Perry Jones III added 14 points.

Heslip, coming off his career-high 27 points on nine 3-pointers in Baylor's second-round win over Colorado, made only one against Xavier. He finished with 11 points. But Acy had his back, throwing down several dunks and adding a few jump shots that surprised Xavier coach Chris Mack.

"He's a cage-rattler," Mack said. "I never saw him hit a 15-foot jump shot, and he does that in the first four minutes of the game."

In the final minute, Acy knocked down a couple of free throws to help seal the victory, again leaving the Bears (30-7) on the brink of the Final Four. They also won three NCAA tournament games in 2010 before losing to eventual national champion Duke.

Wearing bright neon-green uniforms, the Bears led by 18 points less than 8 minutes into the game. Xavier (23-13) played from behind all night, but never quit. Tu Holloway led the Musketeers with 22 points, but they were hurt by poor shooting, especially from beyond the arc.

Xavier went 0-for-11 on 3-pointers before Justin Martin ended the drought with 2 minutes remaining.

"Unfortunately," Xavier's Kenny Frease said, "when you get down that much to a team like Baylor, a lot of times you're not going to be able to come out of it, and today we couldn't."

China's Not-So-Super Computer Program

SHENZHEN, China? The supercomputer in this southern boomtown is named Nebulae for the interstellar clouds of gas that give birth to stars. The machine symbolizes China's soaring ambition to challenge the U.S. and other developed nations in technology, but also underscores the limitations of what China can achieve.

China's unexpected progress in developing supercomputers, the brains of modern science and an engine of economic development, has caused an outbreak of anxiety over the past two years in the U.S., which has long been the field's undisputed leader. China's advances in computing have been critical to its ability to build spacecraft and advanced warplanes and to its growing prowess in genetics. China overtook Japan in 2010 as the number two investor in research and development, according to Battelle Memorial Institute, a Columbus, Ohio, research outfit. Though China remains well behind the U.S. in R&D spending, it is gaining ground.

But a closer look at China's supercomputers reveals a program that is far less of a threat to U.S. technological dominance than commonly believed. Chinese researchers say decisions about how supercomputers are used are often made by local politicians more interested in local development projects than breakthrough technology.

Associated Press

The Tianhe-1A supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing in Tianjin, China.

China's bureaucrats meanwhile haven't figured out how to mount software development projects that come close to U.S. or European standards. Chinese scientists also lack the funding, and freedom, to explore technologies that haven't already been endorsed by the government, which can keep them well behind the cutting edge.

The result is that China's supercomputing projects aren't producing the kinds of breakthroughs that can create new industries. It is instead being deployed to help the country simply catch up with the U.S. and Europe, in areas ranging from health care to automotive design to aviation. That is important economically, but it is also a reminder that China remains a developing country whose main goal is to close the economic and technology gaps with richer nations.

"The strategy has been never to lead, but to follow" technologically, said Qian Depei, a Beihang University researcher, who has worked for decades on China's advanced computing programs. "That was the most economically efficient way to develop."

Richard Suttmeier,a University of Oregon expert on Chinese science policy, said China hasn't figured out "the right formula" to pioneer new technologies in part because researchers are rewarded according to the number of academic papers they publish rather than the quality and novelty of their work.

Supercomputers are largely seen in China as local economic-development tools. City governments play a much larger role in setting China's supercomputer research agenda than they do in the U.S. because Chinese cities finance a larger share of the projects.

Shenzhen, which paid three-quarters of the $1.3 billion cost of the Shenzhen supercomputer center, "doesn't care about climate change and astrophysics"?traditional supercomputer research projects?said Feng Shengzhong, deputy director of a Shenzhen research institute that develops applications for the Nebulae. "They care about local problems."

He is working on a plan to use the Nebulae to improve health care services in South China?a socially important goal but not one that makes use of the power of what is ranked as the world's fourth-fastest supercomputer.

China is now home to 74 of the world's 500 fastest supercomputers?which can make trillions of calculations every second?up from just 10 in 2007. Changes in the way the machines are designed have helped the country.

In the 1980s, when Cray Research in Minneapolis was the world's supercomputer technology leader, the machines were powered by a few enormously powerful processors, whose design was difficult to match. Exports were tightly controlled. Starting in the 1990s, supercomputer researchers began to lash together tens of thousands of off-the-shelf microprocessors to work on a single job. China could buy those computer chips from Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and other firms and make its own machines.

Analysts say that Chinese scientists have benefited from training at top computer centers in the U.S. and Europe and the availability of computer chips and other parts from abroad, as well as consistent Chinese government funding and support. The supercomputer effort isn't dogged by charges that the Chinese have ripped off foreign technology. Rather, Chinese scientists say U.S. restrictions on some high-technology exports have required them to redouble their domestic efforts.

Still, China remains largely dependent on U.S. made microprocessors?the brains of the computer?which puts it behind the leading edge. Beijing has developed one computer that uses locally designed microprocessors, but doesn't run commercially available software. Another microprocessor in development, the Loongson, would use existing software and could eventually become a competitor to Intel and others.

Some of China's supercomputers have been used to design wings for China's stealth fighter, now in test phase, and to design parts for China's first commercial jet. Beijing lags well behind the U.S. in both efforts.

In Shenzhen, the Nebulae, which is still being tested, is expected to improve storm warning systems and help genetics companies search for the causes of disease. But it is also scheduled to be used for far less demanding tasks, such as processing video animation.

In the U.S., said Steve Conway, a supercomputer analyst at market researcher IDC, in Framingham, Mass., cities and states chip in money for local supercomputer centers, but they generally have little say in setting the priorities for the machines. U.S. supercomputer centers nearly always focus on advanced scientific research, such as designing drugs tailored to individuals.

Research at the edge of technology is risky, but can have big payoffs and leave competitors like China well behind. "American alarmism isn't always well-founded," said Mr. Suttmeier, of the University of Oregon. "The critical point is keep devising strategies in the U.S. to stay way ahead of the game."

One of China's greatest weaknesses is in software development, a potentially crippling problem because the usefulness of the machines depends on the quality of the software applications. Less than 10% of supercomputing funding goes to developing such applications, said Chinese researchers who complain that political leaders press them to build headline-grabbing new machines rather than focus on whether they are used to their full capabilities.

In the U.S., which spends about six times as much on supercomputers as China, the software budget equals about 30% of hardware spending, and computer specialists say even that level isn't sufficient.

The battle for software dollars is so intense in China that researchers rarely work as a team on long-term software projects, Chinese scientists say.

To illustrate the uneven perception of China's supercomputer efforts, Mr. Qian, the veteran supercomputer researcher, holds his palms at hip level. "Generally, we're here," he said, "but everyone thinks we're higher," as he raises his palms to shoulder height.

89% In Darkness

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, Agnieszka Holland's IN DARKNESS, is the poor man's SCHINDLER'S LIST, and I mean that as a high compliment. Now don't get me wrong. I think Spielberg made a masterpiece with his Shoah epic, but Holland earns astute emotions and mines similar themes yet in a more intimate setting. Based on the true story of a Polish sewer worker who charged a small group of Jewish refugees a daily fee to squat in the filthy sewers beneath the city. The title of the film is apt, as so much of it takes place in utter darkness. At almost two and a half hours in length, we feel every minute of their intensely long hiding. Like Schindler, our main character, Leopold Socha, played wonderfully by Robert Wieckiewicz, is an opportunist rather than a Jewish sympathizer. In fact, his anti-semitism is much more overt than Schindler's. On the other hand, his wife Wanda, an incredible Kinga Preis, is much more liberal at the outset, but wants to turn her back on the Jews when she fears for her life and that of her family. Their story is so searing, so vivid and unsentimental. It's no wonder I was more drawn to it than to the lives of the various Jews here. While all terrific actors who are given one horrifying scene after another to endure, their plight isn't as layered as that of Socha. There is one exception, and it's played by Benno Furmann, who is the love child of a Patrick Wilson/Josh Lucas bromance. Playing a man who leaves the sewers to escape INTO a concentration camp to save someone's life, he has leading man written all over her face. He easily commands the screen in all of his scenes. One of my all-time favorite critics, Roger Ebert, dismissed this film by saying that we've seen it all before. As much as I respect his opinion, I disagree. Usually films about this period in history tend to glorify the Jewish characters and they make every moment epic. IN DARKNESS does just the opposite. The Jews are just as flawed as any other characters here, as flawed as anybody would be when facing unreal, desperate circumstances. This is not a hyped up film. Something as simple as rainfall becomes an exciting action sequence, but it's played with an ingenious, dispassionate touch that Holland has always brought to her work.
