1986 Kawasaki Concours from Canada

This bike is the best sport tour bike I have owned to date. I have had three others, ST's, Triumph Trophy 1200 and the old Concours. This bike handles almost as good as my Daytona 955i, and has more power than it.

Comfort is good, but the windshield is too short; there are good after market shields out there. I purchased a Cal Scientific; much better wind protection.

The brakes are very strong, and the handling is great for a bike this size. Best bags I have ever used, shaft drive is "untouchable" in the bike market. Service to the shaft is easy, and so is the oil and filter.

Overall I would recommend this bike first for the price, and then for its overall satisfaction. Don't pass it up if you can afford it.

Good luck, there are still few leftovers out there.

P.S. the heat on the legs is not that bad.

Lingerie Letters ? April 2013 | Pout Perfection

Hi Poutlings!

20130417_174226If you didn?t see my Lingerie Letters product & service review from last month ? clickety click! I just thought I?d share my April letter with you? and for everyone that giggled about my personal remark about sharing my knickers online, I?m doing it again?.

20130417_174239

This month was a pair of French knickers, and Lingerie Letters had gone very tres chic with their love notes they send out along with the knickers!

20130417_174416I don?t think I own another pair of French knickers, which I believe are also called ?tap pants? in the USA? They are more similar to a pair of boxer shorts, compared to traditionally fitted underwear. If you wear these during the day, be sure to pair them with very loose fitting pants or a flowing skirt as they can create quite a large visible panty line with the likes of wearing skinny jeans for example.? I think might become a new part of my nightwear, haven?t decided yet though.

20130417_174303

This month Lingerie Letters also sent along with the knickers ?Comfitex Feminie Wipes?, which I assume are of a similar nature to the other products of the same genre on the market, but I have never read or can find any information on the company to be more informed, maybe Lingerie Letters would have more info on this?

Don?t forget to check out their website?LingerieLetters.co.za and sign up for the one month option, for R95,?if you are not sure about how this thing works, it?s fun, cute, a bit cheeky and a very unique idea! They are also quite interactive on their Facebook Page and I?m sure will respond to any queries you may have, alternatively, check them out on Twitter ? @LingerieLetters

Study finds that residential lawns efflux more carbon dioxide than corn fields

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

More carbon dioxide is released from residential lawns than corn fields according to a new study. And much of the difference can likely be attributed to soil temperature. The data, from researchers at Elizabethtown College, suggest that urban heat islands may be working at smaller scales than previously thought.

These findings provide a better understanding of the changes that occur when agricultural lands undergo development and urbanization to support growing urban populations.

David Bowne, assistant professor of biology, led the study to look at the amount of carbon dioxide being released from residential lawns versus corn fields in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His co-author, Erin Johnson, was an undergraduate at the time of the study and did the work as part of her senior honors thesis. Their findings were published online today in Soil Science Society of America Journal.

For Bowne, the study allowed him to look beyond the obvious impact of losing agricultural fields to development ? the loss of food that was once produced on the land.

"That is a legitimate concern, but I wanted to look more at how this change could potentially impact the carbon cycle with the understanding that the carbon cycle has implications for global climate change," explains Bowne.

To begin to understand how the carbon cycle was changing, Bowne and Johnson measured carbon dioxide efflux, soil temperature, and soil moisture under the two different land uses. They found that both carbon dioxide efflux and soil temperature were higher in residential lawns than in corn fields. Additionally, temperature had the most influence on the levels of carbon dioxide efflux, followed by the type of land use.

Higher temperatures leading to increased carbon dioxide efflux was not a surprise for Bowne and Johnson as this relationship has been documented before. "As you increase temperature," Bowne explains, "you increase biological activity ? be it microbial, plant, fungal, or animal." That increased activity, then, leads to more respiration and higher levels of carbon dioxide leaving the soils.

What was unexpected, however, was that the higher temperatures found in residential lawns suggested urban heat islands working at small scales. Urban heat islands are well documented phenomena in which development leads to large areas of dark-colored surfaces such as roofs, buildings, and parking lots. The dark color means more heat is absorbed leading to an increase in temperature in the neighboring areas. Urban areas, then, are warmer than the surrounding countryside.

The interesting part of Bowne's study is that the urban heat islands in the areas he was looking seem to operate on much smaller scales than he previously thought. While heat islands are usually studied on large scales ? such as comparing a large city and its surrounding rural areas ? fewer studies have been done to work out how development may affect temperatures on small scales.

"Within a developed area, within a city or town, you could have local increases in soil temperature because of the amount of development within a really small area," says Bowne.

His research suggests that temperatures may vary even across short distances due to the influence of development. One source cited in his paper says that development within even 175 meters of a location can cause an increase in temperature. Bowne is planning further experiments to test soil temperatures over a range of development setups and sizes.

The other factor that Bowne will test in the future is the sequestration of carbon. Along with the carbon dioxide efflux data in the current study, information about carbon sequestration would give a bigger picture of carbon cycling. That picture could then help researchers determine how various land uses as well as management practices such as no-till agriculture or leaving grass clippings on lawns can change the carbon cycling.

"If we go from one land use to another land use, how does that impact carbon cycling which in turn can affect climate change? Our current study touches on one component of that cycle, and more research is needed to address this huge topic," says Bowne.

Longer days bring 'winter blues' -- for rats, not humans

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Most of us are familiar with the "winter blues," the depression-like symptoms known as "seasonal affective disorder," or SAD, that occurs when the shorter days of winter limit our exposure to natural light and make us more lethargic, irritable and anxious. But for rats it's just the opposite.

Biologists at UC San Diego have found that rats experience more anxiety and depression when the days grow longer. More importantly, they discovered that the rat's brain cells adopt a new chemical code when subjected to large changes in the day and night cycle, flipping a switch to allow an entirely different neurotransmitter to stimulate the same part of the brain.

Their surprising discovery, detailed in the April 26 issue of Science, demonstrates that the adult mammalian brain is much more malleable than was once thought by neurobiologists. Because rat brains are very similar to human brains, their finding also provides a greater insight into the behavioral changes in our brain linked to light reception. And it opens the door for new ways to treat brain disorders such as Parkinson's, caused by the death of dopamine-generating cells in the brain.

The neuroscientists discovered that rats exposed for one week to 19 hours of darkness and five hours of light every day had more nerve cells making dopamine, which made them less stressed and anxious when measured using standardized behavioral tests. Meanwhile, rats exposed for a week with the reverse -- 19 hours of light and five hours of darkness -- had more neurons synthesizing the neurotransmitter somatostatin, making them more stressed and anxious.

"We're diurnal and rats are nocturnal," said Nicholas Spitzer, a professor of biology at UC San Diego and director of the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind. "So for a rat, it's the longer days that produce stress, while for us it's the longer nights that create stress."

Because rats explore and search for food at night, while humans evolved as creatures who hunt and forage during the daylight hours, such differences in brain chemistry and behavior make sense. Evolutionary changes presumably favored humans who were more active gatherers of food during the longer days of summer and saved their energy during the shorter days of winter.

"Light is what wakes us up and if we feel depressed we go for a walk outside," said Davide Dulcis, a research scientist in Spitzer's laboratory and the first author of the study. "When it's spring, I feel more motivation to do the things I like to do because the days are longer. But for the rat, it's just the opposite. Because rats are nocturnal, they're less stressed at night, which is good because that's when they can spend more time foraging or eating."

But how did our brains change when humans evolved millions of years ago from small nocturnal rodents to diurnal creatures to accommodate those behavioral changes?

"We think that somewhere in the brain there's been a change," said Spitzer. "Sometime in the evolution from rat to human there's been an evolutionary adjustment of circuitry to allow switching of neurotransmitters in the opposite direction in response to the same exposure to a balance of light and dark."

A study published earlier this month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found some correlation to the light-dark cycle in rats and stress in humans, at least when it comes to people searching on the internet for information in the winter versus the summer about mental illness. Using Google's search data from 2006 to 2010, a team of researchers led by John Ayers of San Diego State University found that mental health searches on Google were, in general, 14 percent higher in the winter in the United States and 11 percent higher in the Australian winter.

"Now that we know that day length can switch transmitters and change behavior, there may be a connection," said Spitzer.

In their rat experiments, the UC San Diego neuroscientists found that the switch in transmitter synthesis in the rat's brain cells from dopamine to somatostatin or back again was not due to the growth of new neurons, but to the ability of the same neurons there to produce different neurotransmitters.

Rats exposed to 19 hours of darkness every 24 hours during the week showed higher numbers of dopamine neurons within their brains and were more likely, the researchers found, to explore the open end of an elevated maze, a behavioral test showing they were less anxious. These rats were also more willing to swim, another laboratory test that showed they were less stressed.

"Because rats are nocturnal animals, they like to explore during the night and dopamine is a key part of our and their reward system," said Spitzer. "It's part of what allows them to be confident and reduce anxiety."

The researchers said they don't know precisely how this neurotransmitter switch works. Nor do they know what proportion of light and darkness or stress triggers this switch in brain chemistry. "Is it 50-50? Or 80 percent light versus dark and 20 percent stress? We don't know," added Spitzer. "If we just stressed the animal and didn't change their photoperiod, would that lead to changes in transmitter identity? We don't know, but those are all doable experiments."

But as they learn more about this trigger mechanism, they said one promising avenue for human application might be to use this neurotransmitter switch to deliver dopamine effectively to parts of the brain that no longer receive dopamine in Parkinson's patients.

"We could switch to a parallel pathway to put dopamine where it's needed with fewer side effects than pharmacological agents," said Dulcis.

The other researchers involved in the study, which was funded by grants from the Ellison Medical Foundation, were Pouya Jamshidi and Stefan Leutgeb of UC San Diego.

Choosing an Internet Speed for Your Home ~ Tech News 24h

Having Internet in your home gives you endless access to information, communication tools and entertainment. It broadens your world, but it also costs money. And the faster your Internet, the more money it costs.

As you decide which Internet speed is right for you, it?s important for you to consider the advantages of high speed Internet. Here are some important advantages for you to consider:

Access to Library Databases

Both public and private libraries house a wealth of data online. Some of these files can be extremely large. With high speed Internet, it is easier and a lot faster to access this information. It also gives you worldwide access to facilities with which you might otherwise not be able to access. It's not hard to imagine pulling audio from a speech from England or viewing a copy of a Civil War journal from the other side of the country. But it's only easy with a high-speed connection.

Health Care

Online resources such as WebMD give you instant access to health care professionals. While these forums don?t replace traditional doctors visits all together, they do provide a great resource. Unsure if you should go to the doctor? Have a simple, nagging question? Quick answers is one of the advantages of high speed Internet. When it comes to health, the quicker the better.

Streaming

There?s nothing more frustrating than your movie pausing to load mid kiss. High speed Internet allows you to stream videos from popular sites without your video frequently freezing.?

Better Business

For some, telecommuting is a huge perk. For others, working from home is a requirement. Regardless of the why, the advantages of high speed Internet allow you to easily video chat with colleagues or clients and share documents.

Gaming

Whether you are a Dungeons and Dragons master or you just like a good game of Word of Warcraft now and again, you will enjoy the advantages of the high speed Internet. It can help take your gaming to the next level as you can quickly respond to attacks and communicate with fellow players.

Always On

At first there was dial up Internet which required tying up a phone line. This meant each time you wanted to access the web, you needed sign on. (Remember waiting to hear those three little words, ?You?re got mail??) One of the advantages of high speed Internet is instant access all the time. Gone are the days of dial tone waiting.

Dating

The Internet in general has changed the way we meet people and connect with them. Sonnets can now be posted on Facebook walls and emails can be used as an introduction. Perhaps one of the biggest social changes the Internet has made can be found in the dating world. Sites like Match.com and OK Cupid have become a go-to for finding your partner. Among the advantages of high speed Internet is faster access to prospective profiles. Checking out what fish are in the sea has never been so easy.

Men's yearslong feud looms over ricin probe

(AP) ? The investigation into poisoned letters mailed to President Barack Obama and others has shifted from an Elvis impersonator to his longtime foe, and authorities must now figure out if an online feud between the two men might have escalated into something more sinister.

Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, was released from a north Mississippi jail on Tuesday and charges against him were dropped, nearly a week after authorities charged him with sending ricin-laced letters to the president, Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and an 80-year-old Lee County, Miss., Justice Court judge, Sadie Holland.

Before Curtis left jail, authorities had already descended on the home of 41-year-old Everett Dutschke in Tupelo, a northeast Mississippi town best known as the birthplace of the King himself. On Wednesday, they searched the site of a martial arts studio once operated by Dutschke, who hasn't been arrested or charged.

Curtis, who performs as Elvis and other celebrities, describes a bizarre, yearslong feud with the former martial arts instructor, but Dutschke insists he had nothing to do with the letters. The letters contained language identical to that found on Curtis' Facebook page and other websites, making him an early suspect.

Federal authorities have not said what led them to drop the charges against Curtis, and his lawyers say they're not sure what new evidence the FBI has found.

On Wednesday, dozens of investigators were searching at a small retail space where neighboring business owners said Dutschke used to operate a martial arts studio. Officers at the scene wouldn't comment on what they were doing.

Dutschke's attorney, Lori Nail Basham, said Dutschke is "cooperating fully" with investigators.

"The authorities state to me that no warrant has been issued for his arrest," she said Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators in gas masks, gloves and plastic suits emerged from the business carrying five-gallon buckets full of items covered in large plastic bags. Once outside, others started spraying their protective suits with some sort of mist.

Dutschke was seen outside the studio observing the search on Wednesday.

Both men say they have met Wicker, and they each have a connection to Holland, who received one of the ricin letters.

Authorities say the letters were mailed April 8, but the one sent to Holland was the only one to make it into the hands of an intended target. Her son, Democratic state Rep. Steve Holland of Plantersville, said his mother did a "smell test" of the envelope and a substance in it irritated her nose. The judge was not sickened by what authorities say was a crudely made form of the poison, which is derived from castor beans.

Sadie Holland has declined to comment on the case.

She was presiding judge in a case in which Curtis was accused of assaulting a Tupelo attorney in 2003. Holland sentenced Curtis to six months in the county jail. He served only part of the sentence, according to his brother.

Running as a Republican, Dutschke lost a lopsided election to Steve Holland in 2007, and observers say the judge publicly chastised Dutschke at a political rally that year.

Brandon Presley, Mississippi's northern district public service commissioner and a distant cousin of Elvis Presley, attended the 2007 political rally in Verona. He told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he remembers Dutschke giving a "militant" speech with personal and professional attacks Steve Holland.

Presley, also a Democrat, said he was doing his own campaigning, though, and doesn't recall details of the speech ? just the tone of it, and the crowd's reaction.

"I just remember everybody's jaw dropping," Presley said.

Dutschke, who ran as a Republican, said his speech included sharp criticism of Steve Holland's record in public office.

Steve Holland says his mother made Dutschke get down on his knees and apologize. Dutschke denies that, saying Steve Holland is exaggerating.

Presley said he remembers Sadie Holland chastising Dutschke at the event, but he doesn't recall whether Sadie Holland told Dutschke to get on his knees and apologize. "If he didn't, he ought to have," Presley said.

Presley said of Sadie Holland: "I don't believe the woman has an enemy in the world.... I don't know anybody who doesn't love Ms. Sadie Holland, except whoever this fool is who sent the letter. Whoever it is, they ought to be ashamed of themselves, picking on Ms. Sadie."

Dutschke told AP on Tuesday that he has no problem with Sadie Holland. "Everybody loves Sadie, including me," he said.

After being released from jail Tuesday, Curtis described a long feud between himself and Dutschke, but said he's not sure exactly what started it.

The two worked together at Curtis' brother's insurance office years ago, Curtis said.

Curtis said Dutschke told him he owned a newspaper and showed interest in publishing his book called "Missing Pieces," about what Curtis considers an underground market to sell body parts.

But Dutschke decided not to publish the material, Curtis said, and later began stalking him on the Internet.

For his part, Dutschke, a former martial arts instructor, said he didn't even know Curtis that well.

"He almost had my sympathy until I found out that he was trying to blame somebody else," Dutschke said Monday. "I've known he was disturbed for a long time. Last time we had any contact with each other was at some point in 2010 when I threatened to sue him for fraud for posting a Mensa certificate that is a lie. He is not a Mensa member. That certificate is a lie."

Curtis acknowledges posting a fake Mensa certificate on Facebook, but says it was an online trap set up for Dutschke because he believed Dutschke was stalking him online. He knew Dutschke also claimed to be a member of the organization for people with high IQs. Dutschke had a Mensa email address during his 2007 legislative campaign.

Dutschke started a campaign to prove him a liar, Curtis said, and allegedly harassed him through emails and social networking.

Curtis said the two agreed to meet at one point to face off in person, but Dutschke didn't show up.

"The last email I got from him, was, 'Come back tomorrow at 7 and the results of you being splattered all over the pavement will be public for the world to see what a blank, blank, blank you are.' And then at that point, I knew I was dealing with a coward," Curtis said.

The voicemail for Curtis' lawyer, Christi McCoy, was full on Wednesday and she did not immediately respond to a text message. A phone number Kevin Curtis provided to The Associated Press was not working and his brother's number has been changed.

The previous day, Hal Neilson, an attorney for Curtis, said the defense gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis, and that Dutschke's name came up.

Dutschke, who spoke with The Associated Press by telephone several times during the search Tuesday, said his house was also searched last week. He said he and his wife had gone to a friend's Wednesday because they didn't feel safe at their home.

"They ripped everything out of the house," he said Wednesday morning, adding: "I haven't slept at all."

Scientist at Work Blog: A Night of Saurian Spotlighting

Jonathan Losos, professor and curator of herpetology at Harvard?s Museum of Comparative Zoology, writes from Colombia, where he is studying the biodiversity of anole lizards, an evolutionarily successful group that has produced 400 species throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean islands. For more on anoles, see anoleannals.org.

March 5, 2013

Nightfall signals the end of a very successful afternoon of lizard monitoring. To celebrate, we head into Colonia Torva ? billed as ?Germany in the Caribbean? ? to grab some cervezas at the local kaffeehaus. We were elated at the unexpected abundance of tiger anoles we had found, as well as the equally unexpected show they put on.

Yet one question remained: Why did we find four times as many males as females? Is that truly a reflection of a population sex ratio out of whack? Or, as seems more likely, is it just a reflection of males? being more active and using more conspicuous parts of the habitat?

To find out, our plan is use one of the oldest tricks in the anole lizard finder?s book: night lizarding. We?ll go out after dark and look for them while they sleep. It?s then that males and females are more likely to be found in proportion to their true abundance.

Most anoles sleep on leaves and thin branches. This choice of boudoir has a built-in alarm system. It can protect the snoozing saurians from approaching predators, whose footfalls (or in the case of snakes, undulations) cause the sleep site to vibrate. The bed tremors wake the lizard in time for it to jump to safety. But their natural tripwire is completely ineffective against a more recently evolved predator: a bipedal species sporting a strong flashlight. Indeed, for hard-to-find anole species, the most effective strategy is to sleep all day and work all night.

So, off we stroll to town for dinner, planning to head straight from there to the forest we visited earlier in the day. Being herpetologists, we can?t help turning on our headlamps as we walk, scanning our surroundings for who knows what. A frog in the tree? A possum in the bush? You have to look.

And then it happens.

As we pass by a patch of overgrown weeds, Anthony Herrel spots a telltale pale blob attached to a grass blade. A quick panoramic scan indicates the field is chock-full of sleeping lizards, and close examination confirms that they are tiger anoles.

In a day full of surprises, this is possibly the biggest of them all. In all of our many collective years of lizard hunting, none of us has ever seen a twig anole in a weedy field. Twig anoles simply don?t live in such habitats; they are arboreal and occur in bushes and forests. In fact, an anatomically divergent type of habitat specialist called the grass-bush anole has evolved many times to use these habitats.

Finding a twig anole in grass-bush habitat is the anoline equivalent of finding a kangaroo in a tree. How did this happen? But then I remember: This is no ordinary twig anole. It may look like a twig anole, but we found this afternoon that it behaves in a distinctly un-twig-anolish way.

A Different Kind of Tiger

The rest of our trip goes by quickly. Our nighttime surveys revealed the tiger anole?s abundance to be even greater than we had imagined. In a typical night out we might find a couple of lizards per hour, but here we find 40 in 20 minutes. As expected, the sex ratio is approximately even. Further behavioral surveys over the following days are as action-packed as the first afternoon. In one marathon session, Rosario Casta?eda, the Colombian biologist currently working in my lab at Harvard, remains motionless for nearly two hours because every time she takes video of one lizard, another appears nearby. And visits to the weed patch confirm that the lizards are active there, as well as in the forest.

Heading back home, I reflect on the surprising turn of events. We had expected the two species with twig anole-like morphology to behave and use habitats like their Caribbean cousins. We thought the toepad-deprived beach anole should be utterly different from any of the pad-enhanced island habitat specialists.

We found that the variable-scaled anole does, indeed, fit the twig anole bill ? score one for convergent evolution. But the tiger anole is another story altogether. It?s got twig anole-like morphology and uses twig anole habitats. But it also uses habitats occupied by different habitat specialists in the Caribbean, and behaves in a manner distinctly unlike the twig anole. How can convergent evolution in anatomy be explained when species aren?t using the same ecological niche?

And, finally, the curious case of the padless anole. The explanation that pads were lost as an adaptation for walking on the sand isn?t satisfying when one finds that the lizards don?t seem to be using the sand. Why, then?

As always, more questions than answers. Although it would be fascinating to come back and study these species in greater detail, that?s not our plan for the moment. Rather, we need to more broadly survey the evolutionary diversity of mainland anoles, to find out which patterns are the norm, and which are the exceptions. Once we grasp the bigger picture, we can better choose which species to study in greater detail. With data for 30 mainland species in hand, that leaves only 220 more to go. Time to start planning our next trip, in July.

Sprint delays Galaxy S 4 in-store launch due to inventory issues, online and phone sales aren't affected

After T-Mobile said yesterday that it won't be able to offer Samsung's Galaxy S 4 through its online store quite as soon as it expected, Sprint has today announced a similar delay. The carrier originally planned to have Sammy's latest flagship available through all retail channels this Saturday (April 27th), but "unexpected inventory challenges from Samsung" have meant that although online and phone-based sales will open on that date as planned, you won't be able to wander into a Sprint store and pick one up until those supply issues are solved. When that'll be is anyone's guess, but we imagine Sprint will get them into consumers' hands as soon as possible in the hope of improving its balance sheet. See Sprint's full statement after the break.

Hagel to meet Egypt's leaders, push military ties

CAIRO (AP) ? By including Cairo on his first Mideast tour as defense secretary, Chuck Hagel is highlighting the Obama administration's hope of preserving influence with the Egyptian military as the country struggles with its transition to democracy.

After stops in Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, Hagel flew to the Egyptian capital for his first face-to-face meetings with Egypt's top leaders. In their talks Wednesday, he planned to stress the value of close military ties with a country that is deeply divided in the wake of the 2011 revolution that ousted longtime President Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel. The U.S. is deeply concerned, however, that continued instability in Egypt will have broader consequences in a region already rocked by unrest, including in the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited Egypt in March and rewarded it for President Mohammed Morsi's pledges of political and economic reform by releasing $250 million in American aid.

Morsi came to power in June 2012 as Egypt's first freely elected president.

Hagel was scheduled to meet with Morsi as well as Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

On Tuesday the legal adviser to Morsi resigned, alleging that the Muslim Brotherhood has monopolized decision-making and encroached on the governing of the country.

The resignation letter by Mohammed Fouad Gadallah brought the harshest criticism yet from inside the presidency. Opponents of Morsi long have accused the Brotherhood of being the real power behind the president and say the group's attempts to dominate power have fueled the country's turmoil.

Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood, denied in a TV interview earlier this week that the group intervenes in decision-making.

Hagel flew to Cairo from Riyadh, where he met Tuesday evening with top officials, including Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, who serves as the kingdom's defense minister as well. Hagel also held talks Tuesday in Jordan and Israel.

Mormon bishop with Samurai sword runs off attacker

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? A Samurai sword-wielding Mormon bishop helped a neighbor woman escape a Tuesday morning attack by a man who had been stalking her.

Kent Hendrix woke up Tuesday to his teenage son pounding on his bedroom door and telling him somebody was being mugged in front of their house. The 47-year-old father of six rushed out the door and grabbed the weapon closest to him ? a 29-inch high carbon steel Samurai sword.

He came upon what he describes as a melee between a woman and a man. His son stayed inside to call 911 while he approached the man along with other neighbors who came to help. The martial arts instructor didn't hesitate in drawing the sword and yelling at him to get on the ground.

"His eyes got as big as saucers and he kind of gasped and jumped back," Hendrix said by phone Tuesday afternoon. "He's probably never had anyone draw a sword on him before."

The man ran down the street with the barefoot Hendrix and others in pursuit. Hendrix said he couldn't catch the man before he fled in his car, but he picked up ChapStick that the man dropped and memorized his license plate.

"I yelled at him, 'I've got your DNA and I've got your license plate: You are so done,'" Hendrix said.

The suspect, 37-year-old Grant Eggersten, turned himself in to police an hour later, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. He was booked on charges of robbery, attempted burglary, trespassing and violation of a stalking injunction.

Hendrix, a pharmaceutical statistician, was one of several neighbors who came to the woman's aid after she began yelling for help, Hoyal said.

The incident began just after 7 a.m. when the 35-year-old woman came out of her front door, Hoyal said. Eggersten was hiding behind her carport and attacked her, knocking her to the ground, Hoyal said.

He took her keys and tried to open the door into her house, Hoyal said. That's when the woman ran down the street calling for help.

The woman did the right thing by fighting back and calling for help, Hoyal said. She suffered minor injuries.

Hendrix, a bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said it was the first time in 30 years of practicing martial arts that he's used the sword. He didn't swing it at the man, only showing him he had it.

He said he's proud of his 14-year-old son for alerting him and quickly calling 911. He said the family is still abuzz about the events.

"That kind of thing doesn't happen every day," Hendrix said. "Our neighborhood is a pretty quiet place."

A fourth-degree black belt in the Kishindo form of martial arts, Hendrix owns a collection of swords and weapons that he trains with, said his wife, Suzanne Hendrix. He has trained with the sword he used Tuesday for 20 years and keeps it by his bed.

"Some people have bats they go to," said Hendrix. "I have my sword."

Hackers compromise AP Twitter account

(AP) ? Hackers compromised Twitter accounts of The Associated Press on Tuesday, sending out a false tweet about an attack at the White House.

The false tweet said there had been two explosions at the White House and that President Barack Obama was injured. The attack on AP's Twitter account and the AP Mobile Twitter account was preceded by phishing attempts on AP's corporate network.

The AP confirmed that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue. The fake tweet went out shortly after 1 p.m. and briefly sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average sharply lower.

AP spokesman Paul Colford said the news cooperative is working with Twitter to investigate the issue. The AP has disabled its other Twitter accounts following the attack, Colford added. At no time was the AP news wire compromised.

Asked about the incident at a press briefing, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the President is fine.

"I was just with him," Carney said.

New method to assess options for heart-disease surgery

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have developed a method of predicting which patients with heart disease would benefit more from surgery and which would benefit more from angioplasty.

Drawing on Medicare records of more than 100,000 patients with heart disease, the team demonstrated that the effectiveness of coronary bypass surgery varied widely based on each individual's characteristics. The data enabled them to predict which type of intervention -- coronary bypass surgery or coronary angioplasty -- increased the chances of an individual patient living longer, based on a half-dozen traits, such as gender, age and diabetes and smoking history.

The study was published April 23 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Additionally, lead author Mark Hlatky, MD, professor of medicine and of health research and policy, and his team developed an interactive online tool to help clinicians precisely predict how much a patient's survival might change by choosing coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty. Currently, clinicians have to "guesstimate" the effectiveness of these procedures based on their interpretation of medical research.

Hlatky said the study results could help doctors make better decisions about the treatments likely to be most effective for individual patients, rather than relying on medical guidelines that work best for the "typical patient."

"If we could identify the individuals in the population who would benefit the most, and target treatment more precisely, we could have really good outcomes at much lower cost," Hlatky said. He added that this tool can easily be adapted to study other treatments for heart disease, and even treatments for other conditions, such as cancer and stroke.

The research "offers much more refined guidance to clinicians," said Ralph Horwitz, MD, co-chair of an upcoming Institute of Medicine conference on using routine clinical data to improve patient care, where the Stanford researchers will present their findings. Horwitz, who was not involved in the study, added that the Stanford team's novel methods point to a new approach for treatment research. "I think people are looking for efficient ways to understand how variation among patients alters or affects various treatments and procedures," he said. "I think this work very nicely illustrates how to do that."

Coronary bypass surgery and angioplasty are two leading treatments for coronary heart disease, a condition in which the buildup of a waxy, fatty substance called plaque causes a narrowing of arteries, blocking the flow of blood. Over time, the condition can lead to a heart attack and heart failure, sometimes resulting in sudden death.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States. Coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease, claims 385,000 American lives every year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Coronary bypass surgery requires a large chest incision to reach the affected arteries, but this approach sometimes is necessary for patients with multiple blocked arteries. Other times, coronary angioplasty (also known as PCI), a less-invasive procedure, can be done instead. PCI involves threading a thin tube called a catheter through the blood vessels to the site of the blockage, inflating a small balloon to widen the artery and, in most cases, inserting a stent, a small mesh tube, to keep the vessel open.

The study showed that patients with severe heart disease -- those who had two or more blocked arteries -- lived longer, on average, when treated with coronary bypass surgery instead of angioplasty, but how much longer varied widely. For patients with certain conditions, including diabetes, heart failure, peripheral arterial disease, a history of smoking and a recent heart attack, coronary bypass surgery extended their lives by a few weeks to a few months beyond how long they would have been expected to live had they undergone angioplasty. On the other hand, patients without any of these conditions lived longer if they had angioplasty instead of surgery.

Instead of running a randomized clinical trial, which is considered the gold standard for comparing treatments, the researchers simulated a clinical trial using Medicare patient records from 1992 to 2008. One of the drawbacks of randomized clinical trials is that they tend to be small and limit the type of patients who can participate. Hlatky's method used a much larger and more diverse pool of patients, and the treatments were chosen by patients and their doctors, not assigned by a strict research protocol. The researchers matched patients based on more than three-dozen characteristics, except the kind of coronary heart disease surgery they received, using a method called propensity score matching.

"We tried to find medical twins -- one of whom got coronary bypass surgery and one of whom got an angioplasty -- two people who looked alike medically, but were treated differently," Hlatky said. Any differences in the outcomes of these well-matched patients were presumably due to the treatment they received rather than other factors like their medical condition, age, race or the part of the country they lived in.

There is growing evidence that some patient characteristics, such as age, sex and diabetes history, make a difference in the effectiveness of coronary surgery, but this is the first study to quantify how much those characteristics contribute, and to develop an assessment tool to help doctors decide on a treatment plan for their patients.

Hlatky will present his findings at an Institute of Medicine workshop titled "Observational Studies in a Learning Environment" in Washington, D.C., April 24 and 25.

Other Stanford co-authors include Laurence Baker, PhD, professor of health research and policy; biostatistician Derek Boothroyd, PhD; instructor Tara Chang, MD; and biostatistician David Shilane, PhD. Researchers at the University of California-San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente Northern California were also involved in the study.

How To Build Lists Through Email Marketing | Starting-Business

How To Build Lists Through Email Marketing

How To Build Lists Through Email Marketing

It is likely that you have been the recipient of marketing emails previously. Email marketing gives you the ability to both work to retain current customers while also engaging potential customers. Keep reading to find out how email marketing can work for you.

Carefully select the best time to send your messages, based on the needs of your readers. For example, a newsletter that has to do with business does best if it?s distributed during business days. Newsletters related to leisure time or families will be most successful when sent out on the weekend.

Your marketing emails need to stay short. Your language should be as direct as possible. This will show the reader that you respect how much their time is worth. This is also effective at making readers more likely to go over the whole message. Although your most important information should be at the top of the email, there are always important links and content near the end as well.

All images included in the messages should be tagged with Alt data. If the image does not load, the Alt tag will be helpful. The tag should appropriately describe the missing image. You should also use descriptions for your links.

Your email?s subject line should jump out at the reader and make them want to know more. Your customers should be excited when they read the subject line, so they want to open the email. Emails that have headlines or subjects which are suspicious will be deleted or remain unopened.

Do not use email messages that require graphical elements in order to present key facts. Images are frequently not displayed automatically by many email clients, particularly web-based ones. This can make your messages ugly or even unreadable if they are too reliant on images. You should always present vital information in plain text, and make certain that all of your images utilize alt tags.

You should think about combining your email campaigns with other marketing techniques, such as social media marketing. These networks make it easier for customers to share your information with others, and you can grow your mailing list organically by interacting with visitors at your social networking sites, drumming up interest for your content.

SMS messages can be a great side kick to an email strategy. When used together, your readers are able to receive all of the information you wish them to have. Text messages will allow you to increase your brand awareness.

Keep up with your competitors? actions when it comes to their campaigns for email marketing. Signing up with their email lists is an easy way to accomplish this. By seeing what they?re doing, you will be able to make your emails better than theirs. See if you can find niches not addressed by your competition. If they are offering promotions, find ways to offer higher quality promotions.

With the increased use of email over the last decade, email marketing is known to most people now. By using simple email messages, companies can market their products and services. It can work very well as a marketing strategy if utilized right and that can be easily done by using the advice given to you in this article.

Millionaire businessman goes to jail for selling fake bomb detectors

LONDON (AP) ? A British court has convicted a millionaire businessman for selling fake bomb detectors that did not work and were based on a novelty golf ball finder.

James McCormick made an estimated 50 million pounds ($76 million) from sales of his detectors to countries including Iraq, Georgia and Saudi Arabia.

Prosecutor Richard Whittam said the devices, which sold for up to 27,000 pounds ($41,000) each, claimed to be able to find explosives and drugs under water and from the air. He said that in fact they "lacked any grounding in science" and were no better than trying to detect explosives at random.

The 56-year-old McCormick was found guilty of three counts of fraud at a London court on Tuesday. He will be sentenced on May 2.

Liverpool fine Suarez for bite but won't sack him

(Reuters) - Liverpool have fined Uruguay striker Luis Suarez an undisclosed amount for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend but will not sack him, the Premier League club said on Monday.

Suarez, the league's top scorer with 23 goals, has been widely condemned for his behavior in Sunday's 2-2 draw and is expected to get a lengthy ban from the Football Association but Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said the club would stand by him.

"I think the most important thing is that we acted swiftly yesterday," Ayre told the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

"Luis issued his apology and then we spoke with him last night and then again this morning. We've taken action to fine Luis for his actions."

Ayre did not specify the size of the fine but Suarez asked for the money to be donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group - an organization set up after the 1989 stadium disaster that left 96 Liverpool fans dead.

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness said on Sunday that Suarez had reached "last chance saloon" at Anfield after the latest in a string of misdemeanors while others have suggested the club could take a moral stance and terminate his contract.

However, Ayre said manager Brendan Rodgers would work with the player to help improve his discipline.

"The owners are happy with the way we are handling the matter," said the managing director.

"He's a very popular player with his team mates. As we keep saying, he signed a new four-year contract last summer and we'd all love to see him here throughout that contract.

"He's a fantastic player, top scorer and everything we'd want in a striker so there's no change there."

The Professional Footballers Association (PFA) said on Monday that Suarez would be offered anger management classes.
