SEATTLE – State officials said Wednesday they are revoking permits for two planned oil train terminals in southwest Washington after deciding the projects should face more environmental scrutiny.

The state Shorelines Hearings Board issued a letter Wednesday indicating it will invalidate permits for Westway Terminal Co. and Imperium Terminal Services, which want to build oil shipping terminals at the Port of Grays Harbor that could store up to 1.5 million barrels of crude, primarily from North Dakota.

Bakken crude

The projects are among several “crude by rail” terminals being planned or built in Washington to handle a boom in oil production in North Dakota’s Bakken formation. The oil would arrive by train and be shipped out by barge or tanker to refineries on Puget Sound and the California coast.

The city of Hoquiam issued the permits last spring, after determining in conjunction with the state Ecology Department that the proposals posed minimal threat to the environment. The letter called that determination “clearly erroneous,” noting that the city and state officials failed to consider the cumulative environmental impacts of having the two terminals running along with a third terminal planned nearby.

The board also noted the effects of increased train and vessel traffic need to be considered, as does the damage that could be posed by an oil spill or an earthquake.

Rail proponents have argued that shipping oil by train is exceptionally safe, though in Quebec in July an unattended train rolled away and derailed in the town of Lac-Megantic near the Maine border, triggering explosions, the destruction of the town’s center and the deaths of 47 people.

Opponents note that while the construction and operation of oil pipelines is subject to strict state, federal and local environmental and safety reviews, there are no such overarching reviews of crude-by-rail proposals, though the effects of derailments and oil spills can be devastating.

The Quinalt Indian Nation, the Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation and other groups appealed the Westway and Imperium permits to the board, which indicated last month that it had concerns. Wednesday’s letter did not represent an official decision, but was sent to advise the parties of what the decision will be, wrote Kay Brown, an administrative appeals judge for the board.

The groups opposed to the terminals, represented by the environmental law firm Earthjustice, welcomed the news.

“We will not let Grays Harbor become an Alberta tar sands and North Dakota oil depot,” Quinalt Nation President Fawn Sharp said in a news release. “Our history and fishing livelihood demand we protect these waters.”

Heidi Happonen, a spokeswoman for Westway, said the company was reviewing the letter and its implications as it awaits the official decision from the board. She said it wasn’t clear how the decision might affect the timeline of the project. Westway, which already ships methanol from the port, had expected to have the terminal operational by early 2015.

“They’re very interested in pursuing this and continuing to do business there,” Happonen said.

Ecology spokeswoman Linda Kent said the department also was reviewing the letter. An appeal of the official decision, when it is issued, could be filed in state court.

Use of laser light yields versatile manipulation of a quantum bit

May 1, 2013 ? By using light, researchers at UC Santa Barbara have manipulated the quantum state of a single atomic-sized defect in diamond -- the nitrogen-vacancy center -- in a method that not only allows for more unified control than conventional processes, but is more versatile, and opens up the possibility of exploring new solid-state quantum systems.

Their results are published in the latest edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences.

"In contrast to conventional electronics, we developed an all-optical scheme for controlling individual quantum bits in semiconductors using pulses of light," said David Awschalom, director of UCSB's Center for Spintronics & Quantum Computation, professor of physics and of electrical and computer engineering, and the Peter J. Clarke director of the California NanoSystems Institute. "This finding offers an intriguing opportunity for processing and communicating quantum information with photonic chips."

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is a defect in the atomic structure of a diamond where one carbon atom in the diamond lattice is replaced by a nitrogen atom, and an adjacent site in the lattice is vacant. The resulting electronic spin around the defect forms a quantum bit -- "qubit" -- which is the basic unit of a quantum computer. Current processes require this qubit be initialized into a well-defined energy state before interfacing with it. Unlike classical computers, where the basic unit of information, the bit, is either 0 or 1, qubits can be 0, 1, or any mathematical superposition of both, allowing for more complex operations.

"The initial problem we were trying to solve was to figure out a way that we could place our qubit into any possible superposition of its state in a single step," said the paper's first author, physics graduate student Christopher Yale. "It turns out that in addition to being able to do that just by adjusting the laser light interacting with our spin, we discovered that we could generate coherent rotations of that spin state and read out its state relative to any other state of our choosing using only optical processes."

The all-optical control allows for greater versatility in manipulating the NV center over disparate conventional methods that use microwave fields and exploit defect-specific properties. While the NV center in diamond is a promising qubit that has been studied extensively for the past decade, diamonds are challenging to engineer and grow. This all-optical methodology, say the researchers, may allow for the exploration of quantum systems in other materials that are more technologically mature. "Compared to how the NV center is usually studied, these techniques in some ways are more general and could potentially enable the study of unexplored quantum systems," said UCSB physics graduate student Bob Buckley.

Additionally, the all-optical method also has the potential to be more scalable, noted physics graduate student David Christle. "If you have an array of these qubits in order, and if you're applying conventional microwave fields, it becomes difficult to talk to one of them without talking to the others. In principle, with our technique in an idealized optical system, you would be able focus the light down onto a single qubit and only talk to it."

While practical quantum computers are still years and years away, the research opens up new paths toward their eventual creation. According to the group, these devices would be capable of performing certain sophisticated calculations and functions far more efficiently than today's computers can -- leading to advances in fields as diverse as encryption and quantum simulation.

UCSB electrical and computer engineering graduate student F. Joseph Heremans and postdoctoral researcher Lee Bassett also contributed to this study. Additional theoretical work and insight was provided by Guido Burkard, professor of physics at the University of Konstanz, Germany.

Best Selling Author Michelle Hammond talks Miracles, Relationships ...

imagesCAJ0ZJCHWhen I read her book ?Secrets of an Irresistible Woman? in 2004, I never knew, I?d one day be sitting across the room from her. But just like fate, there we were at her Oriental hotel suite over looking the Lagos marina, me with my dictaphone careful to angle my device to catch each word and she cross legged on a sofa, her lips a curved line across her face.

Michelle McKinney Hammond is a bestselling author and Emmy award winning talk show host. The author of over 30 books which include best-selling titles, ?The Diva Principle?, ?Sassy, Single and Satisfied?, ?101 Ways to Get and Keep His Attention?, and ?Secrets of an Irresistible Woman?, she has kept women real with her down to earth, smack-you-subtly in the face styled advice. Michelle?s story isn?t one of easy success, in her books and speaking engagements she has been upfront about life?s challenges, lessons but most importantly, God?s love. We sat down and chatted for over an hour on finding purpose, overcoming life?s challenges and love.

Finding Purpose

Life is a journey, some of us are fortunate to find directions, others shuttle about, hoping that gusts of wind will transport them there. No matter the mode of transportation, our individual journey?s molds us along the way, making us fit for the purpose ahead. Michelle lived a somewhat exotic upbringing having lived and schooled in the West Indies and Europe before settling into life in America.

Today, Michelle lives in Ghana ? the home of her birth father. For several years Michelle lived a full and successful career as an award winning advertising executive. Tragedy struck, when she has hit by a car and suffered a devastating leg injury which led to 3 major knee operations and 18 months of rehab, which included having to re-learn to walk ?(it was during her period of recovery that she wrote and published her first best seller ?What to do until Love Finds you?). Michelle also tragically lost, Scotty her boyfriend at the time. Life has brought other challenges, or as she prefers to call them, ?opportunities? which she says have shaped her into the woman she is today.

She chatted openly with me about the difficulties of being different from a young age and the blessing of finding her birth father.

?I wish that more people could understand that some of us are created to be unique. We are a different type of vessel all together?.I don?t have time to discuss the foibles of my life with the devil or to even listen to his conversation, when he grabs me around the ankles, I drag him across the floor because I?ve just got to keep moving?

Glory: Many people saw you as different when you were younger. What would you say to women who feel inadequate because they don?t fit into society?s mold?

Michelle: I had a hard childhood, I am not going to deny it. Moving from London to Barbados to America, I went through 3 different accents. I was always odd, I was always the different one but I think even that was preparation and I wish that more people could understand that some of us are created to be unique. We are a different type of vessel all together and if you have the right set of parents, it?s great if they can speak into your life and say ?well you are going to be leader and not a follower? or ?you are special?. But if you don?t, it could be hell for you, as you try to work out within yourself, ?who am I and why am I here and why don?t I fit in?. I think that for a long time I was in that club of ?who am I, why am I here and why don?t I fit in?. It made me who I am and it made me a strong individual. I learnt how to stand alone and become an individual, because I was, whether I liked it or not. So I had two choices, I could either cower in it and be depressed about it or I could embrace it and celebrate it and use it for my good. It molded me into the unique person God wanted me to be in the first place. It?s kind of like a caterpillar blossoming into a butterfly, that fight that gives it the ability to fly. If it didn?t have that fight its wings would never develop and it would never fly and it would die. The choice was to fly or die for me and I chose to fly.

Glory: How did the experience of looking for and finding your birth father shape you?

Michelle: I think the most significant thing is that it showed me the power of God and His attentiveness to our desires because it wasn?t really a long journey for me. I remember simply praying as a child that I?d like to see my father one day. It wasn?t something that I consciously pursued. I had one picture of him and I thought he was so cute. And I said, one day I?d really like to know my natural father. The father, I had was wonderful. I didn?t feel fatherless but it was more out of the curiosity of who I was in my natural father that I wanted to locate him. So when my aunt traveled to Ghana and miraculously just happened upon the spot that he visited every day, I knew that was just a move of God. It was a divine appointment in my personal history because of where God knew he was taking me in the future, because if that meeting never happened, this meeting (the interview) would never happen. I would never have made it to Africa, I would still be in the west Indies or America or England or where ever, as opposed to coming to Africa. God was setting up my life long ago and it just blows my mind every time I think about it.

Glory: What was life like before your accident?

Michelle: My life was very active. I think I am still the same person. I don?t think it changed me, I think it changed the direction of my life. I was just as driven, I had a full life, I was using all my gifts, so none of that was different. What the accident did for me was make me focus on what was I supposed to be doing because I was at a transition in my life. I had left the ad agency, I was doing freelance work, but I knew there was something else I was supposed to be doing but I hadn?t gotten that far in figuring it out. It was about making life happen and paying bills and finding the next job and when I wasn?t in the position of running around and finding the next job it was like ok! What am I really supposed to be doing with my life? I?m a big proponent of sitting and being still and hearing what the next move in your life is supposed to be.

Glory: Like many of us, you?ve been through a few seasons in your life, how have you managed to keep it together through those times?

Michelle: I scream in private a lot (laughs)! I don?t know, I think that somewhere along the way, I made a decision that quitting is not an option. Resignation is not an option, apathy is not an option, and depression is not an option. I could be depressed if I want to be and I have certainly had many reasons why people would think I was quite justified in being depressed. But if I rule it out as an option, it forces me to keep moving. My friends would tell you that ?the one thing they know about Michelle, is no matter what happens in her life, she is going to keep moving?.? I have always said I don?t have time to discuss the foibles of my life with the devil or to even listen to his conversation, when he grabs me around the ankles, I drag him across the floor because I?ve just got to keep moving. I think that?s the only way to survive and thrive. The bottom line is that everything that comes into our life is so momentary. So if you park there, you can stay there forever.

Bio_1

Glory: You always said that your books are written from the perspective that striving for a perfect life does not work perfection in us. So what does?

Michelle: Perfection is a process and we won?t be perfected until we leave here. But I think it?s in embracing in the journey of becoming along the way and celebrating the unfolding. I think we can look at it as torture or privilege to constantly be evolving and transforming and growing. If I have a made up mind that I want to make God smile everyday and I want to be the best me that I can be, I make my decision early in the day that no matter what comes my way, I am going to let the best of me come out. I am going to develop another part of me into a stronger part of myself because if I do, I give strength to somebody else. Somebody is watching. I don?t even know who that person is. But somebody is looking at me and they are saying, ?wow, if she can handle that, I can get through this?. I get the opportunity everyday to live a life that says whatever is going on, God makes me flourish in spite of it.

Her passion

Michelle sees her books as one long conversation with her audience and over the years she has kept those conversations going. But unlike other relationship books, Michelle?s advice is based on biblical principles. Principles that she says she couldn?t have lived with out. In this section she tells me about being single and her year long man fast?would any woman dare to join in?

?I challenged God and said listen I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired, I?ve just really had enough. And I don?t want to get married until you can prove to me that I can be happy with just you. That?s a very dangerous prayer. But I think He took me up on the challenge?.

Glory: Your books focus predominantly on love, femininity, and womanhood, any particular reason why?

Michelle: That?s my passion. Those are the discussions that have come to me. My books are just long conversations with my audience on the continuing dialogue of the issues of their hearts. That?s what moves me to write, I don?t really write a book until I hear a conversation that kind of titillates me and makes me go?hmm! I am always seeking answers so people can live their lives. I really want people to get on with their lives. I want them to celebrate where they are, I want them to not see the obstacles as obstacles but as stepping stones, see them as opportunities to get to the next level of themselves.

Glory: You?ve spoken about the ?wilderness? years of your life when you hated being single, how did things change for you?.

Michelle: It?s hard to say, I think that it was so gradual that I didn?t notice when it was happening. I remember the day I challenged God and said ?listen I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired, I?ve just really had enough. And I don?t want to get married until you can prove to me that I can be happy with just you?. That?s a very dangerous prayer. But I think He took me up on the challenge. I really don?t think that I got happy until I wrote ?What to do until Love Finds you?. That was my book of processing for myself. But what happened after I wrote that book was first of all, it settled my issues for me and it put me on a path of purpose as opposed to just pinning for a person. And all of a sudden my life became very full and I had way less time to think about being alone and as the time and the space in my life got filled with touching other peoples lives, loving on other people, answering their questions and being distracted by their own pain from my own?one day I woke up and I said ?wooo!! I am happy, how did this happen?? And that?s when I wrote, ?Sassy, Single and Satisfied?. And I just laughed when we came up with the title, because I thought this is God?s big joke to me! That you can be single, sassy and satisfied and I actually am.

Michelle_5

Glory: Was this when you went through your man fast?

Michelle: Yes! That?s when I thought forget it! I keep picking the wrong people that drive me crazy, let me just stop this madness and deal with myself. I did declare a man fast and I didn?t realize how long the man fast lasted. God actually challenged me, He said ?give me a year of your life, don?t ask me about a man, don?t ask me about your husband, don?t ask me if you are getting married. Give me a year of your life, I want to show you some things?. It was such whirlwind year, everything just took off. Speaking engagements, TV stuff and I remember at the end of the year saying ?God, I think I need another year?!

Glory: Many women feel some type of emptiness, or hunger because they are single What would you say to women who feel this way?

Michelle: There have been times that I have gotten up in the middle of the night and I have gone to the fridge because I was hungry, but I didn?t know what I wanted. So I taste one thing and that?s not it, but I eat the whole thing anyway and five tubs of tasting things later, I?m full but I still not satisfied. I think we need to be careful that we don?t fill ourselves with things that are not conducive for filling the right space in our hearts and in our spirits. Because most of the time, it?s a spiritual hunger and God is trying to draw us closer to Him, to tell us something different, to make us turn the page on something new in our lives. He creates that dis-ease so to seek, that hunger for something more. We need to stop and listen to it as opposed to just guessing what it is. It usually is not the obvious.

Words Every Woman needs to hear

Personally, I feel many relationship books tell us women what we already know but refuse to practice. That said, Michelle has made a living, giving out advice from her boudoir of relationship wisdom, I asked her to share some of her best kept secrets?.

?Stay true to yourself. Never allow anyone to talk you into something that doesn?t align with your spirit. Know the value of your love and never compromise.?

Glory: What do you do with yourself after another failed relationship?

Michelle: You have to stop and heal, because men are not bandages. People will say, you should go out and find somebody new, the best fix for that is just another guy. No its not! You need to stop and deal with what happened in that relationship. You need to deal with your heart condition, you need to deal with who you are and how you define yourself based on what happened before you move on to someone else. I think you need that time, you deserve that time and you should take that time for yourself. To love on you and love yourself back to wholeness, so that you are not carrying bags into the next relationship.

Glory: If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what advice would you give?

Michelle: Stay true to yourself. Never allow anyone to talk you into something that doesn?t align with your spirit. Know the value of your love and never compromise. Never settle for less than what its worth. If you choose to love, love with open hands and that way you?ll never be sorry that you loved. Make God your greatest treasure because everything else will fail you. So don?t place divine expectations on humanity.

images

Glory: There?s a lot of pressure for women to be at a certain place at a certain age you know married, etc?what?s your advice to them?

Michelle: It?s a godly dream to be part of a family unit, to be a wife to be a mother. But because of where we are in the world everyone is not going to work in that space and that is just a harsh reality of the times that we live in. Does that mean something is wrong with you, no it doesn?t. It means that you are here doing the best that you can, and there is still time for it to happen, so work with an expectancy. But if it doesn?t, it doesn?t mean that anything is wrong with you and it doesn?t take away from your power to contribute something meaningful to the world. I think that it is important for us to get over ourselves, to get over our cultural, traditional types of mindsets that insist that this is what a normal life looks like. There is no such thing as a normal life anymore. The world is not conducive to having these cookie cutter molds for what life is supposed to look like. You have to make your peace with where you are on any given day. Walk in expectancy that things can change and that being a wife or a mother can be an opportunity for you but if its not, you can still have a life filled with the opportunity to have great men friends and brothers. You still have the opportunity to have a life filled with children, there are so many children that need to be mothered, that are available to be mothered. I think we need to stop insisting on where we find love and how we find love and be open to all the avenues of expressing love on any given day.

Glory: What are some of your relationship rules?

Michelle: Let the man choose you. It?s huge because I think we set ourselves up for a lot of disappointment by choosing men and then they find the one they want to run after they do that. Let yourself be chosen, know the worth of your love, don?t compromise your standards and turn into someone that you are not to get that person, because they should love you for who you are. So stay authentic to who you are, be transparent, be soft. Women are so afraid to be women these days, they?ve got this hard shell. Men are still looking for women, they really are and they are so happy when they find one. Keep that vulnerability, not loosing the little girl inside but making wise choices as women, is a wonderful blend and combination that is intriguing to any man that you meet.

Meet_Michelle_2

Glory: How do you manage not to be a man basher with all the horrible stories we hear about men?

Michelle: Women can be traumatizing too. I guess that?s the thing because I really do feel sorry for men too, we traumatize them to a great degree. Men are so afraid of women, they understand our power better than we do. They know the power that we have over their lives and I think that they respect it more than we do to be perfectly honest. I?ve been fortunate, even though I have my own bad experiences in love and with guys. I have also had amazing friendships with men and I know their hearts and I know that they are precious, special and strong and when they are in your corner, they are in your corner. I think if we nurtured more of that, we would have much more good men walking around who would be much more responsible, in interactions with women. We also have to take responsibility of how we set ourselves up for disappointment with men. It takes two people to have a relationship and it takes two people to mess it up, it can never be one person?s fault. Whether its something you did or didn?t do, said or didn?t say. Basically if you allowed it, you are part of the equation, so you have to own your part. It kills the whole male bashing thing, because you?ve got your own part to deal with in the drama of your situation. Men only do what we allow them to. And we allow them to do a lot in the name of desperation and loneliness.

This Woman?s Work: The Inspire Series
The Inspire Series is a monthly social media series focused on the lives of women who are shaping their communities. Women and African women in particular face many peculiar struggles. Society in some way conforms us and decides who we ?should? be, where we are ?supposed? to at different stages of life. Generations after generation repeats this cycle of conformity, entrenching even deeper these tacit norms without questioning them.

Ingrained in these tightly packed societal practices are women doing extraordinary things. Like ?Sheroes? these women are impacting their communities in small and big ways, without any need for accolades or recognition. The more I researched and discovered these women, the more I realised that they were like footprints. You never really hear them coming, or see them arrive, but somehow, through the work they do they live deeply etched marks for those who come after.

Intrigued, I wanted to know why these women had chosen to move from life?s well beaten track to a road less travelled. Why leave the comfortable and secure for the daunting and unknown? It is my solid hope that as I explore the lives of these women, myself and all who read will become inspired to leave behind the mundane definitions of what society dictates we should be, and become empowered to reach out and change first ourselves and our communities. Let us all leave behind a trail of foot prints for the girls, daughters, sisters, and women who come after us.

1986 Kawasaki Concours from Canada

This bike is the best sport tour bike I have owned to date. I have had three others, ST's, Triumph Trophy 1200 and the old Concours. This bike handles almost as good as my Daytona 955i, and has more power than it.

Comfort is good, but the windshield is too short; there are good after market shields out there. I purchased a Cal Scientific; much better wind protection.

The brakes are very strong, and the handling is great for a bike this size. Best bags I have ever used, shaft drive is "untouchable" in the bike market. Service to the shaft is easy, and so is the oil and filter.

Overall I would recommend this bike first for the price, and then for its overall satisfaction. Don't pass it up if you can afford it.

Good luck, there are still few leftovers out there.

P.S. the heat on the legs is not that bad.

This month was a pair of French knickers, and Lingerie Letters had gone very tres chic with their love notes they send out along with the knickers!

20130417_174416I don?t think I own another pair of French knickers, which I believe are also called ?tap pants? in the USA? They are more similar to a pair of boxer shorts, compared to traditionally fitted underwear. If you wear these during the day, be sure to pair them with very loose fitting pants or a flowing skirt as they can create quite a large visible panty line with the likes of wearing skinny jeans for example.? I think might become a new part of my nightwear, haven?t decided yet though.

20130417_174303

This month Lingerie Letters also sent along with the knickers ?Comfitex Feminie Wipes?, which I assume are of a similar nature to the other products of the same genre on the market, but I have never read or can find any information on the company to be more informed, maybe Lingerie Letters would have more info on this?

Don?t forget to check out their website?LingerieLetters.co.za and sign up for the one month option, for R95,?if you are not sure about how this thing works, it?s fun, cute, a bit cheeky and a very unique idea! They are also quite interactive on their Facebook Page and I?m sure will respond to any queries you may have, alternatively, check them out on Twitter ? @LingerieLetters

Study finds that residential lawns efflux more carbon dioxide than corn fields

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

More carbon dioxide is released from residential lawns than corn fields according to a new study. And much of the difference can likely be attributed to soil temperature. The data, from researchers at Elizabethtown College, suggest that urban heat islands may be working at smaller scales than previously thought.

These findings provide a better understanding of the changes that occur when agricultural lands undergo development and urbanization to support growing urban populations.

David Bowne, assistant professor of biology, led the study to look at the amount of carbon dioxide being released from residential lawns versus corn fields in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His co-author, Erin Johnson, was an undergraduate at the time of the study and did the work as part of her senior honors thesis. Their findings were published online today in Soil Science Society of America Journal.

For Bowne, the study allowed him to look beyond the obvious impact of losing agricultural fields to development ? the loss of food that was once produced on the land.

"That is a legitimate concern, but I wanted to look more at how this change could potentially impact the carbon cycle with the understanding that the carbon cycle has implications for global climate change," explains Bowne.

To begin to understand how the carbon cycle was changing, Bowne and Johnson measured carbon dioxide efflux, soil temperature, and soil moisture under the two different land uses. They found that both carbon dioxide efflux and soil temperature were higher in residential lawns than in corn fields. Additionally, temperature had the most influence on the levels of carbon dioxide efflux, followed by the type of land use.

Higher temperatures leading to increased carbon dioxide efflux was not a surprise for Bowne and Johnson as this relationship has been documented before. "As you increase temperature," Bowne explains, "you increase biological activity ? be it microbial, plant, fungal, or animal." That increased activity, then, leads to more respiration and higher levels of carbon dioxide leaving the soils.

What was unexpected, however, was that the higher temperatures found in residential lawns suggested urban heat islands working at small scales. Urban heat islands are well documented phenomena in which development leads to large areas of dark-colored surfaces such as roofs, buildings, and parking lots. The dark color means more heat is absorbed leading to an increase in temperature in the neighboring areas. Urban areas, then, are warmer than the surrounding countryside.

The interesting part of Bowne's study is that the urban heat islands in the areas he was looking seem to operate on much smaller scales than he previously thought. While heat islands are usually studied on large scales ? such as comparing a large city and its surrounding rural areas ? fewer studies have been done to work out how development may affect temperatures on small scales.

"Within a developed area, within a city or town, you could have local increases in soil temperature because of the amount of development within a really small area," says Bowne.

His research suggests that temperatures may vary even across short distances due to the influence of development. One source cited in his paper says that development within even 175 meters of a location can cause an increase in temperature. Bowne is planning further experiments to test soil temperatures over a range of development setups and sizes.

The other factor that Bowne will test in the future is the sequestration of carbon. Along with the carbon dioxide efflux data in the current study, information about carbon sequestration would give a bigger picture of carbon cycling. That picture could then help researchers determine how various land uses as well as management practices such as no-till agriculture or leaving grass clippings on lawns can change the carbon cycling.

"If we go from one land use to another land use, how does that impact carbon cycling which in turn can affect climate change? Our current study touches on one component of that cycle, and more research is needed to address this huge topic," says Bowne.

Longer days bring 'winter blues' -- for rats, not humans

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Most of us are familiar with the "winter blues," the depression-like symptoms known as "seasonal affective disorder," or SAD, that occurs when the shorter days of winter limit our exposure to natural light and make us more lethargic, irritable and anxious. But for rats it's just the opposite.

Biologists at UC San Diego have found that rats experience more anxiety and depression when the days grow longer. More importantly, they discovered that the rat's brain cells adopt a new chemical code when subjected to large changes in the day and night cycle, flipping a switch to allow an entirely different neurotransmitter to stimulate the same part of the brain.

Their surprising discovery, detailed in the April 26 issue of Science, demonstrates that the adult mammalian brain is much more malleable than was once thought by neurobiologists. Because rat brains are very similar to human brains, their finding also provides a greater insight into the behavioral changes in our brain linked to light reception. And it opens the door for new ways to treat brain disorders such as Parkinson's, caused by the death of dopamine-generating cells in the brain.

The neuroscientists discovered that rats exposed for one week to 19 hours of darkness and five hours of light every day had more nerve cells making dopamine, which made them less stressed and anxious when measured using standardized behavioral tests. Meanwhile, rats exposed for a week with the reverse -- 19 hours of light and five hours of darkness -- had more neurons synthesizing the neurotransmitter somatostatin, making them more stressed and anxious.

"We're diurnal and rats are nocturnal," said Nicholas Spitzer, a professor of biology at UC San Diego and director of the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind. "So for a rat, it's the longer days that produce stress, while for us it's the longer nights that create stress."

Because rats explore and search for food at night, while humans evolved as creatures who hunt and forage during the daylight hours, such differences in brain chemistry and behavior make sense. Evolutionary changes presumably favored humans who were more active gatherers of food during the longer days of summer and saved their energy during the shorter days of winter.

"Light is what wakes us up and if we feel depressed we go for a walk outside," said Davide Dulcis, a research scientist in Spitzer's laboratory and the first author of the study. "When it's spring, I feel more motivation to do the things I like to do because the days are longer. But for the rat, it's just the opposite. Because rats are nocturnal, they're less stressed at night, which is good because that's when they can spend more time foraging or eating."

But how did our brains change when humans evolved millions of years ago from small nocturnal rodents to diurnal creatures to accommodate those behavioral changes?

"We think that somewhere in the brain there's been a change," said Spitzer. "Sometime in the evolution from rat to human there's been an evolutionary adjustment of circuitry to allow switching of neurotransmitters in the opposite direction in response to the same exposure to a balance of light and dark."

A study published earlier this month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found some correlation to the light-dark cycle in rats and stress in humans, at least when it comes to people searching on the internet for information in the winter versus the summer about mental illness. Using Google's search data from 2006 to 2010, a team of researchers led by John Ayers of San Diego State University found that mental health searches on Google were, in general, 14 percent higher in the winter in the United States and 11 percent higher in the Australian winter.

"Now that we know that day length can switch transmitters and change behavior, there may be a connection," said Spitzer.

In their rat experiments, the UC San Diego neuroscientists found that the switch in transmitter synthesis in the rat's brain cells from dopamine to somatostatin or back again was not due to the growth of new neurons, but to the ability of the same neurons there to produce different neurotransmitters.

Rats exposed to 19 hours of darkness every 24 hours during the week showed higher numbers of dopamine neurons within their brains and were more likely, the researchers found, to explore the open end of an elevated maze, a behavioral test showing they were less anxious. These rats were also more willing to swim, another laboratory test that showed they were less stressed.

"Because rats are nocturnal animals, they like to explore during the night and dopamine is a key part of our and their reward system," said Spitzer. "It's part of what allows them to be confident and reduce anxiety."

The researchers said they don't know precisely how this neurotransmitter switch works. Nor do they know what proportion of light and darkness or stress triggers this switch in brain chemistry. "Is it 50-50? Or 80 percent light versus dark and 20 percent stress? We don't know," added Spitzer. "If we just stressed the animal and didn't change their photoperiod, would that lead to changes in transmitter identity? We don't know, but those are all doable experiments."

But as they learn more about this trigger mechanism, they said one promising avenue for human application might be to use this neurotransmitter switch to deliver dopamine effectively to parts of the brain that no longer receive dopamine in Parkinson's patients.

"We could switch to a parallel pathway to put dopamine where it's needed with fewer side effects than pharmacological agents," said Dulcis.

The other researchers involved in the study, which was funded by grants from the Ellison Medical Foundation, were Pouya Jamshidi and Stefan Leutgeb of UC San Diego.

Choosing an Internet Speed for Your Home ~ Tech News 24h

Having Internet in your home gives you endless access to information, communication tools and entertainment. It broadens your world, but it also costs money. And the faster your Internet, the more money it costs.

As you decide which Internet speed is right for you, it?s important for you to consider the advantages of high speed Internet. Here are some important advantages for you to consider:

Access to Library Databases

Both public and private libraries house a wealth of data online. Some of these files can be extremely large. With high speed Internet, it is easier and a lot faster to access this information. It also gives you worldwide access to facilities with which you might otherwise not be able to access. It's not hard to imagine pulling audio from a speech from England or viewing a copy of a Civil War journal from the other side of the country. But it's only easy with a high-speed connection.

Health Care

Online resources such as WebMD give you instant access to health care professionals. While these forums don?t replace traditional doctors visits all together, they do provide a great resource. Unsure if you should go to the doctor? Have a simple, nagging question? Quick answers is one of the advantages of high speed Internet. When it comes to health, the quicker the better.

Streaming

There?s nothing more frustrating than your movie pausing to load mid kiss. High speed Internet allows you to stream videos from popular sites without your video frequently freezing.?

Better Business

For some, telecommuting is a huge perk. For others, working from home is a requirement. Regardless of the why, the advantages of high speed Internet allow you to easily video chat with colleagues or clients and share documents.

Gaming

Whether you are a Dungeons and Dragons master or you just like a good game of Word of Warcraft now and again, you will enjoy the advantages of the high speed Internet. It can help take your gaming to the next level as you can quickly respond to attacks and communicate with fellow players.

Always On

At first there was dial up Internet which required tying up a phone line. This meant each time you wanted to access the web, you needed sign on. (Remember waiting to hear those three little words, ?You?re got mail??) One of the advantages of high speed Internet is instant access all the time. Gone are the days of dial tone waiting.

Dating

The Internet in general has changed the way we meet people and connect with them. Sonnets can now be posted on Facebook walls and emails can be used as an introduction. Perhaps one of the biggest social changes the Internet has made can be found in the dating world. Sites like Match.com and OK Cupid have become a go-to for finding your partner. Among the advantages of high speed Internet is faster access to prospective profiles. Checking out what fish are in the sea has never been so easy.

Men's yearslong feud looms over ricin probe

(AP) ? The investigation into poisoned letters mailed to President Barack Obama and others has shifted from an Elvis impersonator to his longtime foe, and authorities must now figure out if an online feud between the two men might have escalated into something more sinister.

Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, was released from a north Mississippi jail on Tuesday and charges against him were dropped, nearly a week after authorities charged him with sending ricin-laced letters to the president, Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and an 80-year-old Lee County, Miss., Justice Court judge, Sadie Holland.

Before Curtis left jail, authorities had already descended on the home of 41-year-old Everett Dutschke in Tupelo, a northeast Mississippi town best known as the birthplace of the King himself. On Wednesday, they searched the site of a martial arts studio once operated by Dutschke, who hasn't been arrested or charged.

Curtis, who performs as Elvis and other celebrities, describes a bizarre, yearslong feud with the former martial arts instructor, but Dutschke insists he had nothing to do with the letters. The letters contained language identical to that found on Curtis' Facebook page and other websites, making him an early suspect.

Federal authorities have not said what led them to drop the charges against Curtis, and his lawyers say they're not sure what new evidence the FBI has found.

On Wednesday, dozens of investigators were searching at a small retail space where neighboring business owners said Dutschke used to operate a martial arts studio. Officers at the scene wouldn't comment on what they were doing.

Dutschke's attorney, Lori Nail Basham, said Dutschke is "cooperating fully" with investigators.

"The authorities state to me that no warrant has been issued for his arrest," she said Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators in gas masks, gloves and plastic suits emerged from the business carrying five-gallon buckets full of items covered in large plastic bags. Once outside, others started spraying their protective suits with some sort of mist.

Dutschke was seen outside the studio observing the search on Wednesday.

Both men say they have met Wicker, and they each have a connection to Holland, who received one of the ricin letters.

Authorities say the letters were mailed April 8, but the one sent to Holland was the only one to make it into the hands of an intended target. Her son, Democratic state Rep. Steve Holland of Plantersville, said his mother did a "smell test" of the envelope and a substance in it irritated her nose. The judge was not sickened by what authorities say was a crudely made form of the poison, which is derived from castor beans.

Sadie Holland has declined to comment on the case.

She was presiding judge in a case in which Curtis was accused of assaulting a Tupelo attorney in 2003. Holland sentenced Curtis to six months in the county jail. He served only part of the sentence, according to his brother.

Running as a Republican, Dutschke lost a lopsided election to Steve Holland in 2007, and observers say the judge publicly chastised Dutschke at a political rally that year.

Brandon Presley, Mississippi's northern district public service commissioner and a distant cousin of Elvis Presley, attended the 2007 political rally in Verona. He told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he remembers Dutschke giving a "militant" speech with personal and professional attacks Steve Holland.

Presley, also a Democrat, said he was doing his own campaigning, though, and doesn't recall details of the speech ? just the tone of it, and the crowd's reaction.

"I just remember everybody's jaw dropping," Presley said.

Dutschke, who ran as a Republican, said his speech included sharp criticism of Steve Holland's record in public office.

Steve Holland says his mother made Dutschke get down on his knees and apologize. Dutschke denies that, saying Steve Holland is exaggerating.

Presley said he remembers Sadie Holland chastising Dutschke at the event, but he doesn't recall whether Sadie Holland told Dutschke to get on his knees and apologize. "If he didn't, he ought to have," Presley said.

Presley said of Sadie Holland: "I don't believe the woman has an enemy in the world.... I don't know anybody who doesn't love Ms. Sadie Holland, except whoever this fool is who sent the letter. Whoever it is, they ought to be ashamed of themselves, picking on Ms. Sadie."

Dutschke told AP on Tuesday that he has no problem with Sadie Holland. "Everybody loves Sadie, including me," he said.

After being released from jail Tuesday, Curtis described a long feud between himself and Dutschke, but said he's not sure exactly what started it.

The two worked together at Curtis' brother's insurance office years ago, Curtis said.

Curtis said Dutschke told him he owned a newspaper and showed interest in publishing his book called "Missing Pieces," about what Curtis considers an underground market to sell body parts.

But Dutschke decided not to publish the material, Curtis said, and later began stalking him on the Internet.

For his part, Dutschke, a former martial arts instructor, said he didn't even know Curtis that well.

"He almost had my sympathy until I found out that he was trying to blame somebody else," Dutschke said Monday. "I've known he was disturbed for a long time. Last time we had any contact with each other was at some point in 2010 when I threatened to sue him for fraud for posting a Mensa certificate that is a lie. He is not a Mensa member. That certificate is a lie."

Curtis acknowledges posting a fake Mensa certificate on Facebook, but says it was an online trap set up for Dutschke because he believed Dutschke was stalking him online. He knew Dutschke also claimed to be a member of the organization for people with high IQs. Dutschke had a Mensa email address during his 2007 legislative campaign.

Dutschke started a campaign to prove him a liar, Curtis said, and allegedly harassed him through emails and social networking.

Curtis said the two agreed to meet at one point to face off in person, but Dutschke didn't show up.

"The last email I got from him, was, 'Come back tomorrow at 7 and the results of you being splattered all over the pavement will be public for the world to see what a blank, blank, blank you are.' And then at that point, I knew I was dealing with a coward," Curtis said.

The voicemail for Curtis' lawyer, Christi McCoy, was full on Wednesday and she did not immediately respond to a text message. A phone number Kevin Curtis provided to The Associated Press was not working and his brother's number has been changed.

The previous day, Hal Neilson, an attorney for Curtis, said the defense gave authorities a list of people who may have had a reason to hurt Curtis, and that Dutschke's name came up.

Dutschke, who spoke with The Associated Press by telephone several times during the search Tuesday, said his house was also searched last week. He said he and his wife had gone to a friend's Wednesday because they didn't feel safe at their home.

"They ripped everything out of the house," he said Wednesday morning, adding: "I haven't slept at all."

Scientist at Work Blog: A Night of Saurian Spotlighting

Jonathan Losos, professor and curator of herpetology at Harvard?s Museum of Comparative Zoology, writes from Colombia, where he is studying the biodiversity of anole lizards, an evolutionarily successful group that has produced 400 species throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean islands. For more on anoles, see anoleannals.org.

March 5, 2013

Nightfall signals the end of a very successful afternoon of lizard monitoring. To celebrate, we head into Colonia Torva ? billed as ?Germany in the Caribbean? ? to grab some cervezas at the local kaffeehaus. We were elated at the unexpected abundance of tiger anoles we had found, as well as the equally unexpected show they put on.

Yet one question remained: Why did we find four times as many males as females? Is that truly a reflection of a population sex ratio out of whack? Or, as seems more likely, is it just a reflection of males? being more active and using more conspicuous parts of the habitat?

To find out, our plan is use one of the oldest tricks in the anole lizard finder?s book: night lizarding. We?ll go out after dark and look for them while they sleep. It?s then that males and females are more likely to be found in proportion to their true abundance.

Most anoles sleep on leaves and thin branches. This choice of boudoir has a built-in alarm system. It can protect the snoozing saurians from approaching predators, whose footfalls (or in the case of snakes, undulations) cause the sleep site to vibrate. The bed tremors wake the lizard in time for it to jump to safety. But their natural tripwire is completely ineffective against a more recently evolved predator: a bipedal species sporting a strong flashlight. Indeed, for hard-to-find anole species, the most effective strategy is to sleep all day and work all night.

So, off we stroll to town for dinner, planning to head straight from there to the forest we visited earlier in the day. Being herpetologists, we can?t help turning on our headlamps as we walk, scanning our surroundings for who knows what. A frog in the tree? A possum in the bush? You have to look.

And then it happens.

As we pass by a patch of overgrown weeds, Anthony Herrel spots a telltale pale blob attached to a grass blade. A quick panoramic scan indicates the field is chock-full of sleeping lizards, and close examination confirms that they are tiger anoles.

In a day full of surprises, this is possibly the biggest of them all. In all of our many collective years of lizard hunting, none of us has ever seen a twig anole in a weedy field. Twig anoles simply don?t live in such habitats; they are arboreal and occur in bushes and forests. In fact, an anatomically divergent type of habitat specialist called the grass-bush anole has evolved many times to use these habitats.

Finding a twig anole in grass-bush habitat is the anoline equivalent of finding a kangaroo in a tree. How did this happen? But then I remember: This is no ordinary twig anole. It may look like a twig anole, but we found this afternoon that it behaves in a distinctly un-twig-anolish way.

A Different Kind of Tiger

The rest of our trip goes by quickly. Our nighttime surveys revealed the tiger anole?s abundance to be even greater than we had imagined. In a typical night out we might find a couple of lizards per hour, but here we find 40 in 20 minutes. As expected, the sex ratio is approximately even. Further behavioral surveys over the following days are as action-packed as the first afternoon. In one marathon session, Rosario Casta?eda, the Colombian biologist currently working in my lab at Harvard, remains motionless for nearly two hours because every time she takes video of one lizard, another appears nearby. And visits to the weed patch confirm that the lizards are active there, as well as in the forest.

Heading back home, I reflect on the surprising turn of events. We had expected the two species with twig anole-like morphology to behave and use habitats like their Caribbean cousins. We thought the toepad-deprived beach anole should be utterly different from any of the pad-enhanced island habitat specialists.

We found that the variable-scaled anole does, indeed, fit the twig anole bill ? score one for convergent evolution. But the tiger anole is another story altogether. It?s got twig anole-like morphology and uses twig anole habitats. But it also uses habitats occupied by different habitat specialists in the Caribbean, and behaves in a manner distinctly unlike the twig anole. How can convergent evolution in anatomy be explained when species aren?t using the same ecological niche?

And, finally, the curious case of the padless anole. The explanation that pads were lost as an adaptation for walking on the sand isn?t satisfying when one finds that the lizards don?t seem to be using the sand. Why, then?

As always, more questions than answers. Although it would be fascinating to come back and study these species in greater detail, that?s not our plan for the moment. Rather, we need to more broadly survey the evolutionary diversity of mainland anoles, to find out which patterns are the norm, and which are the exceptions. Once we grasp the bigger picture, we can better choose which species to study in greater detail. With data for 30 mainland species in hand, that leaves only 220 more to go. Time to start planning our next trip, in July.
