How silver turns people blue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Ingesting silver -- in antimicrobial health tonics or for extensive medical treatments involving silver -- can cause argyria, condition in which the skin turns grayish-blue. Brown researchers have discovered how that happens. The process is similar to developing black-and-white photographs, and it's not just the silver.

Researchers from Brown University have shown for the first time how ingesting too much silver can cause argyria, a rare condition in which patients' skin turns a striking shade of grayish blue.

"It's the first conceptual model giving the whole picture of how one develops this condition," said Robert Hurt, professor of engineering at Brown and part of the research team. "What's interesting here is that the particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."

Scientists have known for years argyria had something to do with silver. The condition has been documented in people who (ill advisedly) drink antimicrobial health tonics containing silver nanoparticles and in people who have had extensive medical treatments involving silver. Tissue samples from patients showed silver particles actually lodged deep in the skin, but it wasn't clear how they got there.

As it turns out, argyria is caused by a complex series of chemical reactions, Hurt said. His paper on the subject, authored with Brown colleagues Jingyu Liu, Zhongying Wang, Frances Liu, and Agnes Kane, is published in the journal ACS Nano.

"The particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."Hurt and his team show that nanosilver is broken down in the stomach, absorbed into the bloodstream as a salt and finally deposited in the skin, where exposure to light turns the salt back into elemental silver and creates the telltale bluish hue. That final stage, oddly, involves the same photochemical reaction used to develop black-and-white photographs.

From silver to salt and back again

Hurt and his team have been studying the environmental impact of silver, specifically silver nanoparticles, for years. They've found that nanosilver tends to corrode in acidic environments, giving off charged ions -- silver salts -- that can be toxic in large amounts. Hurt's graduate student, Jingyu Liu (now a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology), thought those same toxic ions might also be produced when silver enters the body, and could play a role in argyria.

To find out, the researchers mixed a series chemical treatments that could simulate what might happen to silver inside the body. One treatment simulated the acidic environment in the gastrointestinal tract; one mimicked the protein content of the bloodstream; and a collagen gel replicated the base membranes of the skin.

They found that nanosilver corrodes in stomach acid in much the same way it does in other acidic environments. Corrosion strips silver atoms of electrons, forming positively charged silver salt ions. Those ions can easily be taken into the bloodstream through channels that absorb other types of salt. That's a crucial step, Hurt said. Silver metal particles themselves aren't terribly likely to make it from the GI tract to the blood, but when they're transformed into a salt, they're ushered right through.

From there, Hurt and his team showed that silver ions bind easily with sulfur present in blood proteins, which would give them a free ride through the bloodstream. Some of those ions would eventually end up in the skin, where they'd be exposed to light.

To re-create this end stage, the researchers shined ultraviolet light on collagen gel containing silver ions. The light caused electrons from the surrounding materials to jump onto the unstable ions, returning them to their original state -- elemental silver. This final reaction is ultimately what turns patients' skin blue. The photoreaction is similar to the way silver is used in black and white photography. When exposed to light, silver salts on a photographic film reduce to elemental silver and darken, creating an image.

Implications for nanosilver

Despite its potential toxicity, silver has been valued for centuries for its ability to kill germs, which is why silver nanoparticles are used today in everything from food packaging to bandages. There are concerns however that this nanoparticle form of silver might pose a unique health threat all its own.

This research, however, "would be one piece of evidence that you could treat nanoparticles in the same way as other forms of silver," Hurt says.

That's because the bioavailable form of silver -- the form that is absorbed into the bloodstream -- is the silver salt that's made in the stomach. Any elemental silver that's ingested is just the raw material to make that bioavailable salt. So ingesting silver in any form, be it nano or not, would have basically the same effect, Hurt said.

"The concern in this case is the total dose of silver, not what form it's in," Hurt said. "This study implies that silver nanoparticles will be less toxic than an equivalent amount of silver salt, at least in this exposure scenario."

The National Science Foundation and the Superfund Research Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences funded the research.

Google Nexus 4 hands-on (video)

Google Nexus 4 handson

So here it is at last, the Nexus 4. After countless leaks we finally got a chance to put our dirty little paws on Google and LG's lovechild. The verdict? It's simply phenomenal. By combining the nicest elements of the Optimus G with the latest iteration of Jelly Bean (Android 4.2) the two companies have created something that's better than the sum of its parts. Like its cousin, the Nexus 4 is built around Qualcomm's snappy 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdradon S4 Pro SoC with Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Storage comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors with no microSD expansion. It features the same lovely 4.7-inch 1280x768-pixel IPS display but sheds LTE support for an unlocked pentaband DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps) radio and wireless charging. On the camera front the Nexus 4 inherits the Optimus G's optional eight-megapixel BSI sensor and f/2.4 autofocus lens, instead of the slightly fancier 13 MP shooter. WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, NFC, Miracast plus a sealed 2100mAh Li-polymer battery complete the package.

Aesthetically, the Nexus 4 blends aspects of the Optimus G and Galaxy Nexus designs, with a glass-covered back and rounded-off top and bottom edges. This phone looks and feels great -- materials and build quality are much improved over last year's handset. At 9.1mm (0.36 inches) thin and 131g (0.31 pounds), it's also very comfortable in hand. Most of the controls are unchanged from its relative -- standard 3.5mm headphone jack and secondary mic on top, volume rocker and micro-SIM tray on the left, micro-USB port and primary mic on the bottom and power / lock button on the right side. The Optimus G's capacitive keys give way to on-screen buttons and the LED notification light moves below the screen (from its former position near the 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera). Overall we're really impressed with the Nexus 4, and that's just the hardware. Sadly, we spent very little time with the software, which includes a plethora of improvements.

You'll be able to purchase a Nexus 4 unlocked in the Play Store starting November 13th for $299 (8GB), $349 (16GB) or $199 with two-year contract on T-Moble (16GB). Stay tuned for our review and until then, take a look at our gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.

Ecuador fears for Assange's health, seeks UK safe passage

MOSCOW/LONDON (Reuters) - Ecuador is worried about the health of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and has asked Britain to guarantee him safe passage from its London embassy to hospital if he needs medical treatment, a senior Ecuadorean diplomat said in Moscow.

Assange, an Australian, has been holed up inside Ecuador's embassy in central London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden to face rape and sexual assault allegations.

British authorities say Assange will be arrested if he sets foot outside the embassy. The apartment building, located just behind London's famed Harrods department store, is under constant police surveillance.

"Assange has grown noticeably thinner, and we are very concerned about his health," Voice of Russia radio quoted Vice Foreign Minister Marco Albuja Martinez as saying in comments confirmed by the Ecuadorean embassy in Moscow.

"If he falls ill, we will have to choose between two alternatives: to treat Assange in the embassy or hospitalize him," Albuja Martinez said. "This is a very serious situation and it can affect Assange's human rights."

Later on Wednesday, Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino told reporters in Quito that while he does not know if Assange has any medical problems, he is worried about his health as time goes on.

"It's obvious that his health will deteriorate and we don't have a protocol, we don't have the necessary conditions" to deal with a possible health emergency, Patino said.

Ecuador has asked the British Foreign Office for a document that would enable Assange to enter hospital safely if necessary and return to the embassy with refugee status.

"I still haven't had a response from Britain to see what we do if Mr. Julian Assange has an emergency ... . At this point, the threat that they will arrest him if he sets foot outside the embassy still stands," Patino said, adding that Assange is "suffering."

Assange is said to be living a cramped life inside the embassy. He eats mostly take-out food and uses a treadmill to burn off energy and a vitamin D lamp to make up for the lack of sunlight.

In late August, the former computer hacker said he expected to wait six months to a year for a deal that would allow him to leave the embassy.

The Foreign Office said it was unaware of Assange's health problems.

"Ecuador have not told us that Mr Assange is ill. However, were they to do so, we would consider the matter," said a Foreign Office spokesman.

Ecuador granted Assange asylum in August and said it shared his fears that he could face charges in the United States over the publication by WikiLeaks in 2010 of thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

When he appeared on a balcony of the building to address supporters in August, Assange appeared tanned and in good health. But a BBC reporter who saw him recently described him as "a very pale man" in a story broadcast on Sunday.

Assange, 41, broke the conditions of his bail when he entered the embassy after running out of legal options to avoid being sent to Sweden.

Speaking about the safe passage request he said Ecuador had lodged with the Foreign Office, Albuja Martinez said his country was pleased that Britain "did not reject it outright".

"We will not put pressure on them and will patiently await an answer, so that Assange can receive medical treatment if necessary," he was quoted as saying in Moscow.

How Mobile technology has been used to create an impact in - iHub

Introduction

Salim Amin, chairman of A24 Media in Nairobi once said, ?The mobile phone has had a bigger impact on the African than colonization?.? Mobile phones have certainly affected the vast majority of Africans and has subsequently been branded Africa?s Swiss army knife. The mobile infrastructure is the only infrastructure that reliably reaches almost everywhere instantly and thus it absorbs all services for which this is helpful.

The story of the mobile phone in Africa is one of exceptional growth. In 1995, 600,000 mobile phones were being used in sub-Saharan Africa, largely in South Africa alone. By 2009, the number surpassed 300 million units.

As of June 2012, Mobile phones represented more than 90% of all telephone lines in Africa. Market penetration passed the 50% mark in 2010 and is expected to reach 60% in December 2012. Subscriber growth across the continent has slowed to around 17% p.a, but several individual markets are still growing at 50% p.a. or more and others stand at only single-digit penetration rates. Subsequently, the subscriber base is still growing at around 40% per year, but the growth curves are beginning to flatten in Africa?s more mature markets such as Nigeria and South Africa, forcing operators to compete more aggressively on price, quality of service and by introducing new services. One of the most difficult aspects in exploring the future of technology in Africa is getting the timeline right. How fast will a trend evolve, when will it reach saturation level?

Mobile industry in Cameroon

The telecommunication industry in Cameroon within the past couple of years ?has become more vibrant and appealing. The number of subscribers has risen tremendously; there are approximately nine million telephone users in Cameroon in a country with a population of twenty million inhabitants. In absolute value, it represents 45% of the population of the country. These numbers are certainly below the average, but it still pinpoints the fast evolution of the telecommunication industry, especially the mobile phone ? which considerably became more democratic during the last decade as it turned out to be an object of large consumption.

?The opportunities for young people to come up with solutions that address our challenges using a platform like mobile, are huge. That?s what we need to be doing in Africa, instead of looking for aid.? says Microsoft?s Mteto Nyati.

The mobile phone is being considered an important tool for development and this is so for various reasons:-

  • ?Beyond basic connectivity, mobile phones offer benefits such as mobility and security to owners (Donner, 2006).
  • Due to their unique characteristics, the mobile phone is an especially good ?leapfrogger? it works using the radio spectrum, as such there is no need to rely on physical infrastructure such as roads and phone wires, and base-stations can be powered using their own generators in places where there is no electrical grid (Economist, 2008).
  • ?Mobile phones only require basic literacy, and therefore are accessible to a large segment of the population.
  • ?Cellular phones enjoy some technical advantages that makes them particularly attractive for development. In addition to voice communication, mobile phones allow for the transfer of data, which can be used in the context of applications for the purposes of health, education, commerce or governance.
  • Finally, due to factors like increased private sector competition and innovative payment methods (e.g. ? prepaid method), mobile phones are increasingly affordable to the lower strata of the population and thereby can be used as a mechanism to ensure greater participation of these groups in the development process.

Internet penetration in Cameroon (per 100 people) was last reported at 4.00 in 2010, according to a World Bank report released in 2011. This shows that there are only 783,955.56 permanent online users as at 2010. The Mobile cellular subscription in the country stands at 9,010,785 as at 2012.

?

Benefits of Mobile phones in Cameroon

The mobile phone is not only a communication device; it also represents the most accessible computing device to the majority of the people. Mobile phones are tools that can promote development by inspiring new business opportunities and increasing efficiency. Local entrepreneurs? innovative use of mobile technology is at the heart of this revolution.

Cameroonians are developing mobile application to address issues in the agricultural sector, health and governance. At ActivSpaces (African Center for Technology, Innovation & Ventures), an open collaboration physical space, innovation hub, and technology incubator aimed at providing coaching services and development resources for start-ups and techies in Cameroon, many such ideas are being developed.

?

Mobile innovations and apps shaping the landscape of Cameroon

Cameroon is embracing mobile technology to address two major challenges: food security and corruption.

Food security

Achieving food security in its totality continues to be a challenge not only for the developing nations, but also for the developed world. The difference lies in the magnitude of the problem in terms of its severity and proportion of the population affected. The root cause of food insecurity in developing countries is the inability of people to gain access to food due to poverty and lack of appropriate information.

Projections show that there will be an increase in this tendency unless preventive measures are taken. Many factors have contributed to this tendency including the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS; civil war, strive and poor governance; frequent drought and famine; and agricultural dependency on the climate and environment. Food security on the continent has worsened since 1970 and the proportion of the malnourished population has remained within the 33 to 35 percent range in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Cameroon is taking a bold stand and tackling the issue of food security through the use of modern day technology.

?

Tackling challenges in the Agriculture sector

Agro-Hub, an idea incubated at the Activspaces, is a startup venture set up to address the expressed needs of rural Farmers to boost demand for their products and make more money from their laborious efforts. Agro-Hub seeks to achieve this through the innovative use of the web and mobile technology to drive demand for farmers? products, attract better prices and increase farmers? income.

What makes Agro-Hubs concept resonate well in the Agro-business fraternity is the use of SMS (short message services) and social media such as twitter to reach an infinite number of subscribers spread across the Agricultural belt of Cameroon.

Through mobile information platforms such as Agro-Hub, farmers receive text messages with information that help to improve the productivity of their land and boost their incomes. Governments and agricultural support organisations can use the platforms to distribute information about available subsidies and programmes.

Corruption, Cameroons best kept secret

Is African corruption unique, or is it just like corruption in the many other parts of the world? Citizens of African countries tend to argue that they have an?unchangeable?lead in the whole business of corruption ? their own problem exceeds that of all other countries. International corporate types, however, tend to see corruption in Africa as being no different to that which they face or participate in across a range of countries. In NGO circles corruption in Africa tends to be regarded as a product of western influence and the siren voices of capitalism.? Where does the truth lie?

Not a day goes by in Cameroon without a newspaper article on fraud, embezzlement or other corrupt practices, while conversations with locals are peppered with anecdotes about civil servants and private-sector workers demanding bribes. Many people are willing to tell stories of how corruption has affected their families and businesses, but none are prepared to go on the record or take legal action. However, a mobile application called baksheesh is being used to lobby for transparency in governance by profiling bribe allegations and presenting them to the relevant authorities

?

Baksheesh: Fighting corruption using the Mobile phone

?Baksheesh?? in Arabic is money offered to crooked officials to get rid of red-tape. And so ?NoBakchich? implies ?no more bribes.? That?s the name of a mobile telephone application conceived to primarily run on android mobile handsets, or smartphones. They merge cell or mobile phone technology with e-mail internet applications like e-mail, information searching and social networking. Its architect is 24-year-old Cameroonian-born Herv? Djia. He and fellow developers have been testing ?NoBakchich? since early July. They are planning to formally launch it in August for smartphone users. It will also be made available on an internet website. ?NoBakchich? provides consumers with the latest information on the cost of public service procedures. The only thing users need to do is install the application on their android phones, then click to find out how to obtain services from government departments. The application got its first lease of life under the hospice of Activespaces and is slowly gaining public appeal as the yard stick that will chase corruption out of Cameroon.

By rapidly improving the citizen?s ability to communicate, mobile applications such as NoBakchich are forcing African governments to pay more and more heed to the principles of good governance. Mobile phones allow users to voice their discontent as voters who feel excluded from the political process and harassed by corrupt officials. They are affording Africans the means of employing ?crowdsourcing? to bring about political change. Though still in its infancy, this development is one that bears great potential for improving the daily lives of many Africans.

?

CONCLUSION

In less than three decades, the mobile phone has gone from being a status symbol to being a ubiquitous technology that facilitates almost every interaction in our daily lives. One month after the world?s population topped 7 billion in October 2011, the GSM Association announced that mobile SIM cards had reached 6 billion. A 2009 study in India illustrated that every 10 percent increase in mobile penetration leads to a 1.2 percent increase in GDP.

Many crystal-ball gazers have stated that mobile phone use in developing countries is vastly different from what you see on the streets of New York and Bangkok. The African market is?under served?by technologists and startups. This is where the majority of future growth lies, and Silicon Valley has yet to realize the huge economic opportunities for network operators, handset developers, and mobile startups.

Boat Finance: Getting a loan with an NMBA lender | Credit Solutions

Other than the option to get a loan through a boat dealer with which you want to buy a boat, there is a possibility to get a loan with an NMBA lender. The NMBA stands for National Marine Bankers Association. This is an organization which deals with boat financing options, and has specialists who have substantial understanding of financing and boating at the same time. The members of the NMBA are various banks, local and national, other financial institutions which offer money lending and various credit unions. They all offer good deals, better than you can find outside the association, since they have made making boat loans as their primary source of income. This way they keep the boat financing market competitive, as they set the trends on best deals.

Get the best Financial Tips at Credit Visionary

They offer different options and possibilities for the deals they make, and here we will list them:

Realistic down payments ? The down payment, also called a deposit, is the amount of money that is given to lessen the monthly installments, and to provide security that the customer will go through with the deal. It is based on the age of the boat in question, its price and your credit file ranking. The members of the association offer the best deals when it comes down to down payments, as they require only between 10 and 20 percent of the amount to be laid down as deposit. Many members also offer some specials which are related with very low down payments for new boats. You should check with the lender about that.

boat-finance-1

Faster decisions whether or not you have been approved the loan ? Since the members of the NMBA are financial institutions which are specialists for boat loans, and have a great understanding of boats and maritime industry, it does not often take much time to get loan approval, as it is all done within the same institution and all the checks and procedures are done within the same database. It usually takes only a few hours to get the approval on the loan, whereas regularly it would take a few days of running around to get a good loan deal.

Longer financing terms ? Because the members of the NMBA know much about boats, and have enthusiasm for them, they know how important for the value of the boat is that you maintain it well. They also know what price a well-maintained boat will have for the re-marketing, so they can offer you longer financing terms, if it is promised to keep the boat well maintained over the course of the loan.

Lower monthly payments ? The members of the NMBA also know that the boats generally last longer than cars, so it is possible that they can offer you deals which last longer than the deals for cars. Along with that, they offer lower interest rates for boat loans. This means that the offers will have much lower monthly payments than you may have intended for when starting to look for a loan. This way you can acquire an even better boat than intended in the first place.

boat-finance-2

More extra equipment and extra options for your boat ? With the specialists who work within the National Marine Banking Association, who are well informed and educated in boats and maritime industry, you can be sure that loan options will not include only the boat you are buying, but also many other extra options which can make your boat and your boating experience much more safer and enjoyable. Unique feature of HIV helps create antibodies, researchers discover

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A new AIDS study, published Oct. 22 in the journal, Nature Medicine, describes how a unique change in the outer covering of the virus found in two HIV infected South African women enabled them to make potent antibodies which are able to kill up to 88% of HIV types from around the world. The ground-breaking discovery suggests an important new approach that could be useful in making an AIDS vaccine.

The study, performed by members of the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) consortium, involves scientists from Wits University, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Johannesburg, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Cape Town, who has been studying, over the last five years, how certain HIV-infected people develop very powerful antibody responses.

These antibodies are referred to as broadly neutralising antibodies because they kill a wide range of HIV types from different parts of the world. This CAPRISA team initially discovered that two KwaZulu-Natal women, one of whom participated in the CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel study, could make these rare antibodies.

Through long-term follow-up laboratory studies on these two women, the team led by Wits researchers and Centre for HIV and STI at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of the National Health Laboratory Service based scientists Dr Penny Moore and Professor Lynn Morris, discovered that a sugar (known as a glycan) on the surface protein coat of the virus at a specific position (referred to as position 332) forms a site of vulnerability in the virus and enables the body to mount a broadly neutralizing antibody response.

"Understanding this elaborate game of 'cat and mouse' between HIV and the immune response of the infected person has provided valuable insights into how broadly neutralizing antibodies arise," says Moore.

Morris, Head of AIDS Research at the NICD explained: "We were surprised to find that the virus that caused infection in many cases did not have this antibody target on its outer covering. But over time, the virus was pressured by body's immune reaction to cover itself with the sugar that formed a point of vulnerability, and so allowed the development of antibodies that hit that weak spot."

"Broadly neutralising antibodies are considered to be the key to making an AIDS vaccine. This discovery provides new clues on how vaccines could be designed to elicit broadly neutralising antibodies. The world needs an effective AIDS vaccine to overcome the global scourge of AIDS," said Professor Salim Abdool Karim, Director of CAPRISA and President of the Medical Research Council, in his comments on the significance of the finding.

While their existence has been known for a while, highly potent forms of broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV were only identified about 3 years ago. Until now, it was not known how the human body is able to make broadly neutralizing antibodies.

This study discovered one mechanism by which these antibodies may be made. To make this discovery, the research team studied the target of some of these antibodies, a sugar that coats the surface protein of HIV, forming a site of vulnerability. By tracing back the evolution of the virus that elicited these antibodies, this team showed that this particular weak point was absent from the virus that first infected these women.

However, under constant pressure from other less powerful antibodies that develop in all infected people, their HIV was forced to expose this vulnerability over time. This allowed the broadly neutralizing antibodies to develop.

Analysis of a large number of other viruses from throughout the world, performed in collaboration with scientists from the University of North Carolina and Harvard University, suggest that the vulnerability at position 332 may be present at the time of infection in about two thirds of subtype C viruses (the subtype most common in Africa). Hence, if a vaccine is developed to target this glycan only, it may not be able to uniformly neutralize all subtype C viruses; as a result AIDS vaccines may need to attack multiple targets on the virus.

Monday Motivation - Sales Shift

"I can honestly say I learned more in 3 days than I had in 3 years of Business School! You put some confidence behind the potential and I can't thank you enough."

Multimedia Advertising Consultant
The Telegram, Transcontinental Media NL

"Jill, you are truly making a difference in people's careers. I am sure you hear this all the time, but I have to tell you that you are brilliant at your profession. As an attorney, I have been subjected to countless hours of "training," and I can honestly say that your course was the most beneficial and enjoyable that I have ever taken... you have truly changed my perception of selling. Thanks for everything."

Account Executive,
Softchoice Corporation

"The combination of sales training, reinforcement clinics, coaching initiatives, coupled with Jill's contribution as a speaker at our national sales and marketing conferences, has raised the bar within our team in terms of how we look at our sales efforts. We have moved away from being task oriented sales people to becoming a strategic sales team. The sales planning and support tools were critical in the continuance of our learning and application of training after the sessions were completed. Overall, we became a better sales force as a result of this partnership."

Managing Director of Sales,
Hilton Worldwide

"Jill, I wanted to drop you a quick thank you note regarding the most recent CSP training. I have been getting glowing comments on how fantastic the training was and also on how wonderful the instructor was. Everyone I have spoken to regarding the training felt it was a valuable use of their time and that it would definitely help them advance their sales cycles. Thanks again for all of your dedication in making this program a success."

Senior Director Sales North America,

"Jill, just wanted to reiterate that the SalesSHIFT presentation that you presented today at the SITE Education day was absolutely fabulous and key to sales success. The topic, message and delivery were excellent! The message was simple yet so powerful that I walked away inspired, motivated and ready to implement the directives from the presentation. In fact, I'm following through on revisiting a client conversation to fully understand their point of view based on my learnings at your presentation... Thank you for delivering a strategic and vital sales message that is critical to the success of individuals and businesses.'

Vice President, Operations, Canada,
HRG Events and Meeting Management

"I was less than enthusiastic to attend yet another 'sales training', as this was probably the 15th throughout my career. Jill Harrington?s qualities as a business person, a communicator and seasoned sales leader quickly turned things around for me. Without question, one of the best trainers I?ve ever met."

Senior Account Manager
Softchoice / Optimus Regional HQ

"Jill is rock solid in her delivery and an expert in her field. The content is not only educational but extremely entertaining as well. If you are interested in improving sales in your organization, you owe it to yourself and your company to talk with Jill."

Changing an individual?s process in a profession like ours is only possible when you gain absolute buy-in to the concept and you develop a deep rooted belief in the rep that applying this process will prove success in every outcome... Your amazing ability to send seven people back to me that were wholly committed to this program makes my job easier."

Retail Advertising Manager,
The Telegram, Transcontinental Media NL

"What?s changed for me is that for every important client meeting, I review my notes from your training just to remind me to always put myself in the clients shoes and to always focus on what is important to them so that I can do my best to satisfy their requirements?so far it has paid off more than I could have ever imagined. I?ve been selling in various industries for 16 years now?I only now feel like a true professional! Thank you so much?no BS, I truly attribute much of my recent success to your training!"

"Jill has trained three of my teams in the past five years for various companies and she consistently delivers valuable, relevant and useful sales techniques and ideas. She is a true professional sales trainer who kept my goals and objectives in mind throughout the four day session. Jill?s approachable style will put the most fragile and non-confident sales people at ease and allow for true learning to take place. Within days of the training I observed first-hand the shift in my sales team and the wins that we scored. Thanks Jill- looking forward to a follow up refresher day in the future."

Executive Director, Sales,
Cineplex Entertainment

?I consider myself a so called seasoned professional and let me tell you ? I am enjoying your (webinar) training. Yes it?s reinforcing what I already know but I haven?t needed to do any new business development prospecting in a long time and frankly I?ve gotten rusty. The session on Friday was excellent. I immediately updated my LinkedIn profile following the meeting. Goes without saying ? you can use me as an advocate for your training any time. Thank you.?

Director Client Services,
AIMIA

?Based on the feedback I received from John and a few of the attendees, it sounds like the session last week was extremely well received! Jill thank you for your hard work and thorough preparation. I had one of the Relationship Managers say to me, "she really knew her stuff!" ? thank you once again for a "top shelf" experience!?

Senior Relationship Manager,

"JIll's approach was exactly what the client needed. It was focused, informative, energetic, interactive and tailored to the issues the client was trying to behaviorally change. Her commitment to insuring the client got the desired results was evident. She would be an asset to any organization looking to improve their sales performance."

?

Many of the winners will be showcased during the Festival?s Best of the Fest program, Wednesday, October 24 at the AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois St.). ?

The Silver Hugo Special Jury Prize is awarded to AFTER LUCIA (Mexico/France) for being a film of great simplicity and restraint, that nevertheless moved and shocked the jury. Director: Michel Franco.

?

The Silver Hugo for Best Actor goes to Denis Lavant in HOLY MOTORS (France/Germany) for breathing life into a character who is alternately tragic, hilarious, shocking, profound, hideous, beautiful, wise - but always human - and, quite simply, unlike anything we've ever seen before.

?

The Silver Hugo for Best Actress goes to Ulla Skoog in THE LAST SENTENCE (Sweden) for showing, with great subtlety and skill, the depth, complexity and humanity of a seemingly "ordinary" human-being. Director: Jan Troell.

?

The Silver Hugo for Best Cinematography goes to Yves Cape and Caroline Champetier of HOLY MOTORS for images that were achingly beautiful and inventive, and somehow managed to be always perfectly in sync with the confounding universe of the narrative.

?

?

New Directors Competition
This selection of first and second feature films receiving their U.S. premiere in Chicago celebrates the spirit of discovery and innovation upon which the Festival was founded.

?

The Gold Hugo goes to THE EXAM (Hungary), a film which combines the intricate plotting of a Cold War secret agent thriller with the serious undercurrent concerning deeper issues of personal loyalty versus the police state; it exudes a quiet confidence, remarkable in a new filmmaker. Director: Pet?r Bergendy.

?

The Silver Hugo is awarded to FLOWERBUDS (Czech Republic), a glum image of current Czech society that is illuminated by quirky observation and even an occasional touch of humor. An impressive and sophisticated beginning. Director: Zdenek Jirasky.

?

The New Directors Competition Jury includes Dan Berger, Rebeca Conget, Jonathan Miller and John Russell Taylor.

?

Docufest Competition
This selection of international documentaries competing for the Gold Hugo go beyond the headlines in telling those true stories that surprise, entertain and challenge us.

?

The Gold Hugo goes to THE BELIEVERS (USA). This tightly constructed cinematic argument with strong characters puts a human face on scientific research and discovery acknowledging our universal understanding of human failings in our desire to achieve success. In THE BELIEVERS, the filmmakers remind us just how inexact science really is sometimes. Directors: Clayton Brown and Monica Long Ross.

?

The Silver Hugo goes to NUMBERED (Israel). Visually stunning, compelling stories with surprising humor and wit edited into an impactful whole to remind us that the past lives on for the next generations. NUMBERED clearly demonstrates the importance of documenting the collective story of the Holocaust and other world genocide. Director: Dana Doron and Uriel Sinai.

The Docufest Competition Jury includes Reiner Veit, Alicia Sams and Ruth Leitman.

After Dark Competition
This competitive program of scary movies from around the world takes audiences on a journey to the darkest corners of the human soul.

?

The Gold Hugo goes to ANTIVIRAL (Canada/USA), one of the more ambitious feature film debuts in recent memory. Writer-director Brandon Cronenberg's ANTIVIRAL is a work obsessed with perversions of the flesh, in the areas of science and sexuality. The film is the work of a budding visionary--full of inventive and effective artistry, and a clear sense of where we are going as a celebrity-worshipping society. Director: Brandon Cronenberg.

?

The Silver Hugo goes to SLEEP TIGHT (Spain). Jaume Balaguer?'s gift as a director of thrillers is his way with psychological tension, digging out worrying new ways to describe how the world is simply not ever a safe place to be. In SLEEP TIGHT, not even bed and a little bit of sleep are safe. Director: Jaume Balaguer?.

?

The After Dark Competition Jury includes Jayme Joyce, Steve Prokopy and Ray Pride.

?

Short Film Competition
The Gold Hugo for Best Short Film goes to RETURN (Israel), awarded for its extraordinary exploration of cultural dislocation as seen through the eyes of a young man who returns to his Israeli home after a life-changing trip to India, director Shay Levi wisely chooses to avoid obvious melodramatic touches. Instead, he tells the story through nuance and the subtle play of a moving camera. The result is that we are taken into the pained and confused mind of the protagonist yet given enough information to empathize with the people to whom he can no longer relate. The jury wishes to recognize that this achievement is all the more noteworthy because RETURN is the work of a student filmmaker. It gives us hope for a future of challenging and rewarding films from Mr. Levi. Director Shay Levi.

?

The Silver Hugo for Best Narrative/Live Action Short goes to PAUL (Israel), awarded for its effective mix of a fantastical story with the visual elements of noir, and for a central character whose plight is lovingly conveyed with Keatonesque simplicity. This tale of a dog-faced man who sets out to find his stolen pet fish brilliantly walks the tightrope between magical realism and a dark night of the soul. The fact that there are no missteps is due to its effective mixture of cinematic dexterity and a keen eye for the foibles of human behavior. The jury was particularly impressed by the central performance. Little more than a bodysuit made of crepe, Paul proved to be one of the most fully rounded and emotionally affecting characters that we have seen in a long time. Director: Adam Bizanski.

?

The Silver Hugo for Best Short Documentary goes to PARADISE (USA). With a moment of calm daybreak followed by harnesses, ropes, and the calculated preparation of a great heist movie, director Nadav Kurtz drops the audience of his short film PARADISE into a meditation through the perspective of three Chicago window washers. Topically a film about men at work, this documentary incorporates fluid camera movements, beautiful photography, steady editing, and a lovely yet understated guitar soundtrack. The subjects discuss marriage, growing old, death, the afterlife, and teaching the next generation while building inhabitants continue downtown - living, working, playing, and going to Starbucks. Director: Nadav Kurtz.

?

The Silver Hugo for Best Animated Short, the highest for an animated short film, goes to OH, WILLY (Belgium) due to its stunning originality. The jury found the film to be a treat, full of narrative surprises and delightful tonal shifts, and that rare beast of a film ? one where the material design itself (a world covered in fuzzy wool) lends an unmistakable expressivity to the landscape of the film and characters in it. The narrative?s tender, scary, and surreal episodes culminate in a fantasy with an unexpected and captivating conclusion. Directors: Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels.

?

The Gold Plaque for Best Student Film is awarded to NEXT DOOR LETTERS (Sweden) both for its brave style (balancing a digi-folksy aesthetic with a hint of the grotesque), and its effectively shaped narrative. Based on a true story of teenage longing and burgeoning queer identity, the jury found it a touching and an impressive achievement. Director: Sascha F?lscher.

?

The Gold Plaque for Animated Short is awarded to EDMOND WAS A DONKEY (Canada/France) for its unique story of a young office drone who comes to accept the image others have of him, as well as for its ability to effectively and cinematically capture the essence of fable. Mixing black and white imagery, ironic voiceovers and a Bu?uelian sense of the absurd, EDMOND WAS A DONKEY is that rare film that delights us with what it has to say as much as how it says it. Director: Franck Dion.

?

The Silver Plaque for Narrative/Live Action Short is awarded to VOICE OVER (Spain). On another planet, attacked by monsters, crawling through mud to save loved ones, and being dragged to murky depths by a vessel thought to be your salvation - there is no explicit way to describe the feelings outlined at the culmination of Martin Rosete?s VOICE OVER. The jury awards a Silver Plaque for the film?s art direction, technical mastery, riveting script, compact editing, elegant yet tongue-tied narrator, and a reminder of adolescent and adult struggles for life and love. Director: Martin Rosete.

A Special Mention for Narrative/Life Action Short goes to CAF? REGULAR, CAIRO (Egypt) for its effective and well-directed use of improvisation to create an intimacy not only between the characters onscreen, but between them and the audience as well. Director: Ritesh Batra.

?

The Short Film Competition Jury includes Melika Bass, Ronald Falzone and Andrew Suprenant.

?

INTERCOM Competition
One of the longest-running international competitions of its kind, INTERCOM honors a wide range of corporate-sponsored, educational and branded films.

?

The Gold Hugo goes to HANDTMANN ? IDEA FOR THE FUTURE by Naumann Film, a compelling and elegantly cinematic evocation of the ways manufacturing and technology connect human beings in the 21st century.

?

The Gold Plaque go to SAVE BOWLING by Brad Bischoff. BBBS by Bengar Films; MAY FOOD KEEP US TOGETHER: "LAST STALL STANDING" by Peoples Production Limited; and SWISS LIFE - CORPORATE MOVIE by Seed Audio-Visual Communication AG.

?

The INTERCOM Competition Jury includes Ronald Falzone, Anne Willmore, Hannah Dallman, Zoran Samardzija, and Dan Rybicky.

?

Massage Therapy insurance could be vital to your practice ...

For professional massage therapists and bodyworkers, massage therapy insurance can be just as important to your practice as the table you choose for your session room or the modality you provide for clients. The reason massage therapy insurance ranks right up there with such integral parts of your practice is because without it, you could lose the entire business you have built.

It is true that you will not use your massage therapy insurance in your practice nearly as much as you use your hands to apply your preferred techniques or as much as you use your massage table to conduct each session. However, when and if you ever do need to use massage therapy insurance, it can protect you and your practice from financial ruin.

In a sense, massage therapy insurance could be thought of as the equivalent of car insurance for severe accidents. While you may not be leaning on your car insurance all that often, you would be mighty glad to have it in case you were involved in a severe accident of some kind. In such a scenario, that insurance policy could be the only thing that prevents you from going bankrupt due to medical bills, rental car fees and body shop payments.

When dealing with massage therapist insurance, the coverage works much the same way. While you most likely will not be using your massage therapy insurance policy all that often, you would be extremely grateful to have it if a client ever decided to sue you for damages over an injury that the client somehow pins on you. In a situation like this, your massage therapy liability insurance will protect you and your practice from the financial drain of legal fees, possible medical bills and so on.

The sticking point here for most professional massage therapists and bodyworkers is the fact that it can be difficult to imagine a client ever suffering an injury that would be at all connected with you and your practice. However, what you must remember is this: accidents happen.

You never know when a client may trip over a rug in your hallway, break his wrist and decide to sue you for the damages. You never know when a client may convince herself that it was your deep tissue techniques, not last month?s fender bender, that have caused her neck pain.

These are just two simple examples of the types of accidents or unexpected scenarios that can unfold within and around a massage therapy or bodywork practice. Such situations may seem far less likely to happen than a car crash, but that unpredictable risk factor is still there.

That?s why professional massage therapists and bodyworkers would be wise to secure high quality massage therapy liability insurance for their practices. The fee for massage therapy insurance is usually less than a couple hundred dollars per year, while the peace of mind provided by such a policy is priceless.
