HBT: Dodgers asked about Teixeira, Sabathia

Because we didn?t already think the Dodgers were crazy enough, Joel Sherman reports today that they asked the Yankees about Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia.

This was all part of a plan in which they basically called everyone asking if they wanted to unload their albatross contracts. Because apparently now, trading for highly inefficient contracts is the new inefficiency:

But it also is what led to a phone conversation with the Yankees about Sabathia (four years at $99 million left after this season) and Teixeira (four years, $90 million left after this season). The Yanks told Dodgers executives they had no interest in moving either.

The Yankees would be insane to let Sabathia go, but if you?re Brian Cashman, man, don?t you put Teixeira on waivers, let the Dodgers claim him and then just let him go? ?I mean, he?s probably got a couple of rebound seasons left in him, but I?d be shocked if he had even one season worth anything close to the $22.5 million he?s owed for each of the next four years, let alone four of them.

As for the Dodgers, I guess you can?t get anything you want if you don?t ask for it. Why contracts like the ones they?re taking on and asking about are something they want, however, are another question.

Targeted oxidation-blocker prevents secondary damage after traumatic brain injury, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Treatment with an agent that blocks the oxidation of an important component of the mitochondrial membrane prevented the secondary damage of severe traumatic brain injury and preserved function that would otherwise have been impaired, according to a research team from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Graduate School of Public Health and Department of Chemistry in a report published online August 26 in Nature Neuroscience.

Annually, an estimated 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to traffic accidents, falls, assaults and sports participation, said the study's senior author H?lya Bay?r, M.D., associate professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She added that 52,000 of those injured die, and 85,000 are left with significant disability.

"We don't yet have a specific therapy for TBI, but can provide only supportive care to try to ease symptoms," Dr. Bay?r said. "Our study drug shows promise as a neuroprotective agent that might help address this important public health problem."

For the study, the research team conducted a global assessment of all the phospholipids in rat brain cells. This revealed that damage from TBI was nonrandom and mostly involved cardiolipin, a phospholipid that is found in the membranes that form mitochondria, the cell's powerhouse. They noted that in the healthy animal, only 10 of the 190 cardiolipin species were modified by oxygen, but after a brain injury, the number of oxidized species rose many-fold.

The researchers then developed an agent, called XJB-5-131, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and prevent the oxidation of cardiolipin. Using an established research model of severe TBI, the agent or a placebo was injected into the bloodstream of rats five minutes and again 24 hours after head injury.

In the weeks that followed, treated animals performed akin to normal on tests of balance, agility and motor coordination, learning, and object recognition, while placebo-treated animals showed significant impairment. The results indicate that blocking cardiolipin oxidation by XJB-5-131 protected the brain from cell death.

"The primary head injury might not be that serious," Dr. Bay?r noted. "But that initial injury can set into motion secondary cellular and molecular events that cause more damage to the brain and that ultimately determine the outcome for the patient."

She added that a targeted oxidation-blocker might also be beneficial in the treatment of other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and stroke.

Study identifies human melanoma stem cells

Friday, August 24, 2012

Cancer stem cells are defined by three abilities: differentiation, self-renewal and their ability to seed a tumor. These stem cells resist chemotherapy and many researchers posit their role in relapse. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study recently published in the journal Stem Cells, shows that melanoma cells with these abilities are marked by the enzyme ALDH, and imagines new therapies to target high-ALDH cells, potentially weeding the body of these most dangerous cancer creators.

"We've seen ALDH as a stem cell marker in other cancer types, but not in melanoma, and until now its function has been largely unknown," says the paper's senior author, Mayumi Fujita, MD, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the Department of Dermatology at the CU School of Medicine.

Fujita's group transplanted ALDH+ and ALDH- melanoma cells into animal models, showing the ALDH+ cells were much more powerfully tumorigenic. In the same ALDH+ cells, the group then silenced the gene that creates this protein, finding that with ALDH knocked down, melanoma cells died in cultures and lost their ability to form tumors in animal models. In cell cultures, silencing this ALDH gene also sensitized melanoma cells to existing chemotherapies. When the group explored human tumor samples, they found distinct subpopulations of these ALDH+ cells, which made up about 0.1-0.2 percent of patients' primary tumors. In samples of metastatic melanoma ? the most aggressive form of the disease ? the percentage of ALDH+ cells was greater, even over 10 percent in some tumors, further implying the powerful danger of these cells.

"In these same ALDH+ cells, we find the markers of stem cells are upregulated and those of cell differentiation are downregulated. In addition to these clues, ALDH+ cells generate the heterogeneous cell types seen in the original tumor," says Fujita, meaning that in addition to self-renewal and tumorigenesis, ALDH+ cells fulfill the third criteria for a cancer stem cell: the ability to differentiate.

The study also shows how the ALDH gene and its protein act to create a cell's stem-like properties.

"One way ALDH makes a cancer stem cell is through the retinoic acid signaling pathway," Fujita says. The protein ALDH leads to the overproduction of retinoic acid, which in turn binds to a cell's nuclear receptors and influences the expression of many of the cell's genes ? for example, genes involved in regulating cell survival, repair, and proliferation, all of which combine to confer chemoresistance. Target cells with high ALDH and you target all the downstream effects, including the retinoic acid signaling pathway.

"Our hope is that we can intervene in this signaling, either at the level of ALDH or elsewhere in the pathway, especially to re-sensitize cells to chemotherapy. Using a new drug to take away a melanoma stem cell's chemoresistance could boost the effectiveness of existing drugs," Fujita says.

Gold Fields: KDC fire a mystery, arson not ruled out

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Arson or illicit mining may have been responsible for a fire at a South African operation of world no. 4 gold producer Gold Fields that killed five workers in June, the company's chief executive said on Thursday.

"It's impossible to rule out anything," Nick Holland told Reuters.

"This was an old worked-out area and we have no current workers in there and haven't had people in there for years," Holland said.

"So fires don't start by themselves. You need activities. You need material movement. So it's a mystery to us," he said.

Mine owners say illegal mining is a major problem in resource-rich South Africa.

Gold Fields said it expected to lose about 50,000 ounces of production from the fire at the Ya Rona shaft at its KDC West operation because of disruption to working areas nearby.

In March, up to 20 men were killed after a rock fall at an abandoned gold mine near Johannesburg and at least 10 died in May when a tunnel collapsed at a disused diamond mine.

Other mining executives and sources have told Reuters the Ya Rona fire bore the hallmarks of arson or illegal mining.

Illegal miners sometimes light fires to cook which can cause larger blazes or trigger methane explosions. Arson sometimes stems from labor disputes or unrest.

Holland said the fire, which raged for weeks, was now out but investigators could not yet access the area safely.

"We are now flushing the mine out of all the gases. Once we can get in there safely we hopefully will learn more clues," he said.

He said the company was now sealing off all disused areas at its mining operations in South Africa.

South Africa approves 'Made in Palestinian Territories' tags

South Africa's cabinet on Wednesday said it had approved the placing of Occupied Palestinian Territory labels on imported goods from Jewish settlements.

The trade minister was given the nod to issue a notice requiring that products are marked so that buyers knew their origin is not Israel, government spokesman Jimmy Manyi told a press briefing.

"This is in line with South Africa's stance that recognises the 1948 borders delineated by the United Nations and does not recognise occupied territories beyond these borders as being part of the state of Israel," he said.

The plan has already met protests in South Africa and been slammed by Israel's foreign ministry. Local Jewish leaders said Wednesday the community was outraged over what they called "discriminatory, divisive" measures.

"At bottom, they are believed to be motivated not by technical trade concerns but by political bias against the state of Israel. All attempts to discuss these concerns, however, have come to nothing," the South African Jewish Board of Deputies said in a statement.

South Africa says its backing of Palestine stems from its own history of apartheid, oppression and rights abuses.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim recently expressed "concern by high profile and government institutions visits to Israel as it gives legitimacy to Israel occupation of Palestine land".

The trade ministry in May invited public comments on the labels, saying traders must put the tags on so consumers will "not be misled".

Robust Demand for Mobile VoIP Services and Growing Adoption ...

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) August 14, 2012

Follow us on LinkedIn ? In this age of cut throat competition, where companies are increasingly compelled to extend their reach beyond geographic boundaries, the need to establish communications with a wide range of internal and external business partners, including customers, suppliers, distributors and employees becomes critical. This brings to the fore, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which as a technology is fast replacing traditional PSTN based voice communication services, that too at significantly lesser costs. Capable of converting voice signals into digital data packets, which are then transmitted over the IP Networks such as Internet or private networks, VoIP comes as a highly cost efficient solution for delivering voice communications for businesses, and therefore is growing in tremendous popularity across the globe. A special case of providing VoIP capability for businesses, Business VoIP services is fast growing in popularity as well as in commercial implementations in the enterprise segment.

As a key initial investment, adoption of Business VoIP infrastructure comes as an important strategic decision for enterprises, and therefore needs critical evaluation of requirement, including the actual need for change in enterprise telephony strategy, availability of economic and technical resources for making the change, and consideration of key benefits that the new technology may provide to the company. The ability of Business VoIP services to provide exceptional cost benefits with regard to voice communications is the key rationale for businesses moving from traditional PSTN to VoIP infrastructure. Business VoIP allows enterprises to use existing Internet infrastructure as means to place free phone calls, thereby driving significant cost benefits. By allowing both voice and data traffic to be transmitted over a single network, VoIP saves considerable infrastructure costs for businesses, which would have otherwise been spent on establishing separate voice and data networks. Given that price of VoIP extensions are also significantly lower than traditional PBX and key systems, also make VoIP services more economically viable than traditional PSTN based telecommunications.

The upcoming years are forecast to witness strong demand for mobile VoIP services. Increasing number of mobile workforce, and constant need for such employees to stay in touch with corporate headquarters, and carry out functions such as making sales transactions, passing sales or purchase orders, and reporting productivity even while away from the office, is driving strong business case for Mobile Business VoIP services. Enabling traveling executives, telecommuters, and call-center agents within an organization to use softphones for accessing features of corporate phones while working at home or while on the go, mobile VoIP services are increasingly being adopted by businesses, thereby driving the overall Business VoIP market. Hardware price reductions of IP telephony systems will turn out to be a good incentive for consumers to invest in next-generation systems and converged networks, thus encouraging faster migration to Business VoIP services.

Another major factor driving business prospects in the Business VoIP Services market is the ability of the technology in enhancing productivity. Business VoIP features and capabilities such as desk calling, automated attendant, extension management, follow me/gather me, outlook integration, remote office, unified mutter mail, voicemail, call record, conference calling, and video conference, allow companies to leverage the power of seamless and uninterrupted connectivity among employees and with external business partners, to realize overall productivity enhancements within organizations. The latest VoIP applications and business systems such a unified communications and collaboration ensures collaborated team work, irrespective of the location of team members, thereby positively influencing employee morale and overall productivity.

Mushrooming of small and medium businesses (SMBs), especially in the developing countries, and the subsequent need for voice communications among these enterprises is leading to increased adoption of VoIP services in this consumer segment. Hosted Business VoIP services, which eliminate the need for capital investments, especially on VoIP systems and provide cost effective scalability especially makes Business VoIP practically viable for SMBs, thereby increasing its adoption among this customer cluster. As an increased number of SMBs begin to recognize the advantages of IP telephony and as older telephony platforms reach the end of their lifecycle, Business VoIP adoption is expected to continue gaining momentum.

As stated by the new market research report on Business VoIP Services, Europe represents the largest regional market, accounting for a majority share in global market revenues. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest growing market with annual revenues from the region waxing at a CAGR of about 17.3% over the analysis period. Booming economies, robust growth in the enterprise sector, international business expansions, increase in enterprise mobility, especially in emerging markets such as China and India, are fingered as key factors driving growth in the region. Managed IP PBX Services is the fastest growing market segment with growth projected to wax at a CAGR of 12.2% over the analysis period. Value and cost savings are poised to drive growth in the Hosted VoIP and Unified Communications market.

Major players in the global marketplace include 8?8 Inc., AAPT, AT&T Inc., BroadView Networks Inc., British Telecommunications Plc, Cable & Wireless Worldwide Plc, Cbeyond Inc., CenturyLink, Inc., Comcast Corporation, Megapath Inc., Verizon Business, INET Telecoms Ltd., (Voipfone), Level 3 Communications Inc., M5 Networks Inc., Masergy Communications, Inc., Net2Phone Inc., New Global Telecom Inc., NTT Communications Corporation, Orange, XO Communications, LLC, among others.

The research report titled ?Business VoIP Services: A Global Strategic Business Report? announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., provides a comprehensive review of market trends, issues, drivers, company profiles, mergers, acquisitions and other strategic industry activities. Affinia Gardens Unveils New Lobby as Living Room

Boutique Upper East Side Hotel Encourages Guests to Gather with Communal Space, Tea Lounge, Wi-Fi and Grab and Go Food, Drink and Novelty Items

New York, NY ? Aug. 14, 2012 ? Boutique hotel brand Affinia Hotels has reinvented the hotel lobby with the redesign of the lobby at Affinia Gardens, an all-suite hotel on Manhattan?s Upper East Side. The result is a uniquely intimate and communal residential environment.

?Because we view our guests like family, we wanted to design public spaces that make them feel at home,? said Betsey Moser, interior-design project manager for Affinia Hotels.

From the moment guests cross the East 64th Street threshold they enter a lobby that resembles a contemporary living room. Facing the entrance is a handmade fireplace set in a wood-paneled wall lined with shelves of gardening books from around the world and repurposed garden tools as accents. Upholstered chairs flank the hearth, accented by four leather ottomans that serve as a coffee table. Two arched floor lamps complete the inviting tableau done in rich earth colors of nutty brown, golden rod yellow and warm grey.

?We were inspired by the idea of an Upper East Side garden to create a modern and comforting reception area where guests could feel immediately home,? said Christina Zimmer, principal at Stonehill & Taylor, the firm responsible for the renovation.

Influences of the hotel?s garden theme are visible in the Living Room through the use of color and natural materials, including woods and stone, which create a uniquely communal residential environment. The floor is honed marble. The reception desk was inspired by a potter?s table, made of rich walnut and zinc, accented by overhead lights fashioned from upside-down copper pots. The limited color palette keeps the intimate space cohesive and not busy feeling; making the check-in area part of the Living Room. Prints of heritage begonias, created by the design team, grace one wall, and the pattern on the seating area carpet was recreated from a photograph of a garden path, an initial inspiration for the room.

Yet another new feature of the Living Room is The Cupboard. Aptly named after one of the most-visited places at home, and with a contemporary take on the general store, it offers grab-and-go food, beverages, sundries and fun, whimsical merchandise displayed artistically with moss, a playful nod to the garden theme. Instead of putting The Cupboard in a separate room, Stonehill & Taylor placed it on open shelves that run along the wall between the entrance and the check-in desk, further enhancing the residential feel of the room.

To the left of the Living Room is the newly designed Tea Lounge. More casual and intimate, it features two chocolate leather chairs and a leather couch framed by black wood end tables and bronze table lamps with oversized shades. An area rug in creams and espresso warms up the conversational area and complements the dark-wood flooring. A long black wood communal table serves up a Mac computer for all to use. Guests may also catch up on the news on a large, flat-screen TV or borrow a book from the rotating library. All are invited to help them-selves to coffee and tea, including a custom Affinia tea blend by Harney & Sons, from the coffee maker on the polished travertine countertop.

?The new first-floor space, whether you are in the Living Room or the Tea Lounge, is as functional as it is warm and inviting, giving people a reason to stay, mingle, work and relax,? added Moser.

Affinia Gardens offers business and leisure travelers spacious suites (up to 900 square feet) with fully equipped kitchens, and some featuring fully furnished, private patio terraces. As part of the redesign Affinia Gardens now has complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the public spaces. There are also two entrances, one directly into the lobby and one closer to the elevators, which affords guests additional privacy when coming and going. All Affinia Hotels provide Tender Loving Comfort? (TLC), rooted in exceptional customer service and encouraging guest feedback, which includes evening Comfort Hour, for mingling with hotel staff, and a Comfort Cart, from which guests can sample and provide feedback on new amenities, free of charge.

Hypersonic jet aims to hit Mach 6

The US military has conducted a test flight of its hypersonic jet Waverider, aiming to reach Mach 6 (4,300mph; 6,900km/h) above the Pacific Ocean.

At that speed it could travel from London to New York in about an hour. Results from the test flight have not yet been released.

Pentagon and Nasa hope to use the project to develop faster missiles.

During a test in June 2011, Waverider travelled at Mach 5, but failed to reach the target speed.

It is one of several projects currently under way to create a hypersonic aircraft.

The research could also be used to build a commercial plane, able to reach much higher speeds than today's jets, after Concorde was decommissioned in 2003.

Five-minute flight

The military intended to use a B-52 bomber to lift the wingless unmanned jet from US Edwards Air Force Base in California to 50,000 feet (15,250m).

The craft was then to be dropped and after a free fall of about four seconds, its engine is supposed to ignite.

Analysis

While it's the prospect of rapid transatlantic flight that has caught the headlines, the technology in the X-51A Waverider could have a potent military application too.

If it works, then this engine technology could power the world's first hypersonic cruise missile.

The Pentagon's ambitious Prompt Global Strike programme has the goal of enabling the US military to strike a target anywhere on Earth within an hour. The Waverider could make such a goal a reality.

X-51A Waverider was then expected to climb to 70,000ft (21,300m) and eventually reach Mach 6.

The Mach number is the ratio of the speed of an object to the speed of sound. Mach 1 is the speed of sound - approximately 768mph, depending on various factors including temperature and altitude.

So Mach 6 is six times the speed of sound. Concorde's cruising speed was Mach 2 - it flew from London to New York in just over three hours.

The Waverider test flight was expected to last for about five minutes before the craft falls into the Pacific.

The test is essentially a repeat of last summer's attempt, when the hypersonic aircraft reached Mach 5, but the engine failed to attain full power.

Military officials said the results would be available later on Wednesday.

Concorde's legacy?

European aerospace and defence giant EADS believes that hypersonic passenger flights are likely to appear in the near future. In 2011, EADS presented its own concept of a commercial high-speed aircraft designed to fly at Mach 4.

"The business community who wanted to be in New York in three hours made Concorde highly viable, and now there's interest on both sides of the Atlantic to jump a generation and go from supersonic flight to hypersonic flight," EADS' vice-president of business development, Peter Robbie, told the BBC.

"Such an aircraft will be very expensive, of course, because of the enormous amounts of energy that is required to get to such speeds.

"But the idea of going from Tokyo to Paris in two-and-a-half hours is very attractive for the business and political community - and I think that by about 2050, there may be a viable commercial aircraft."

In August 2011, US military scientists attempted to get another unmanned hypersonic experimental aircraft to reach Mach 20 - 20 times the speed of sound.

However, they lost contact with the Falcon Hypersonic Test Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) after it had separated from its rocket.

Closing in on the border between primordial plasma and ordinary matter

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Scientists taking advantage of the versatility and new capabilities of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), an atom smasher at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, have observed first glimpses of a possible boundary separating ordinary nuclear matter, composed of protons and neutrons, from the seething soup of their constituent quarks and gluons that permeated the early universe some 14 billion years ago. Though RHIC physicists have been creating and studying this primordial quark-gluon plasma (QGP) for some time, the latest preliminary data -- presented at the Quark Matter 2012 international conference -- come from systematic studies varying the energy and types of colliding ions to create this new form of matter under a broad range of initial conditions, allowing the experimenters to unravel its intriguing properties.

"2012 has been a banner year for RHIC, with record-breaking collision rates, first collisions of uranium ions, and first asymmetric collisions of gold ions with copper ions," said Samuel Aronson, Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory. "These unique capabilities demonstrate the flexibility and outstanding performance of this machine as we seek to explore the subtle interplay of particles and forces that transformed the QGP of the early universe into the matter that makes up our world today."

The nuclei of today's ordinary atoms and QGP represent two different phases of matter whose constituents interact through the strongest of Nature's forces. These interactions are described by a theory known as quantum chromodynamics, or QCD, so scientists sometimes refer to the exploration of QGP and this transition as the study of QCD matter.

As in other forms of matter, the different phases exist under different conditions of temperature and density, which can be mapped out on a "phase diagram," where the regions are separated by a phase boundary akin to those that separate liquid water from ice and from steam. But in the case of nuclear matter, scientists still are not sure where to draw those boundary lines. RHIC is providing the first clues.

"RHIC is well positioned to explore QCD phase structure because we can vary the collision energy over a wide range, and in so doing, change the temperature and net quark density with which QCD matter is formed," said Steven Vigdor, Brookhaven's Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear and Particle Physics, who leads the RHIC research program.

For example, physicists from RHIC's STAR and PHENIX collaborations have analyzed results from gold ion collisions taking place at energies of 200 billion electron volts (GeV) per pair of colliding particles, all the way down to 7.7 GeV.

While at the highest energies evidence for QGP formation is widely accepted, "many of the signatures of the QGP developed at 200 GeV disappear as the energy decreases," said STAR spokesperson Nu Xu, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

In particular, the STAR findings analyzed so far indicate that interactions among "free" quarks and gluons -- those characteristic of the "perfect" liquid QGP discovered at RHIC -- appear to dominate at energies above 39 GeV, while at energies below 11.5 GeV, the interactions of bound states of quarks and gluons known as hadrons (such as the protons and neutrons of ordinary matter) appear to be the dominant feature observed.

"As you get below 39 GeV, several key observables begin to change," Xu said.

The PHENIX experiment has observed similar behavior. They have found that quarks passing through the matter produced at collision energies from 39 GeV upward lose energy rapidly, as anticipated for interactions within QGP. Previous PHENIX results from copper-copper collisions at 22 GeV, in contrast, are consistent with no significant energy loss.

These measurements are helping scientists plot definitive points, or signposts, which tell them they may be approaching the boundary between ordinary nuclear matter and the QGP that dominated the early universe. But they haven't yet proven that a sharp boundary line exists, or found the "critical endpoint" at the termination of that line.

"The critical endpoint, if it exists, occurs at a unique value of temperature and density beyond which QGP and ordinary matter can co-exist," said Vigdor. It is analogous to a critical point beyond which liquid water and water vapor can co-exist in thermal equilibrium, he said.

RHIC Explores Matter at the Dawn of Time

Because of the complexity of QCD calculations, there is as yet no consensus among theorists where the QCD critical point should lie or even if it exists. But RHIC experimentalists say they see hints in the data around 20 GeV that resemble signatures predicted to be observed near such a QCD critical point. However, much more data from future experiment runs at RHIC is required to turn these hints into conclusive evidence.

Apparent symmetry violations disappear at low energy

One signal that disappears in gold-gold collisions at RHIC energies below 11.5 GeV is the indication of a small separation of positive from negative electric charge within the matter produced in each individual collision. Ordinarily, such a charge separation would be forbidden by the "mirror symmetry" that is a fundamental feature of QCD. But at the ultra-high temperatures of QGP, the theory allows such symmetry violations to occur in localized "bubbles," as long as they average out to zero when bubbles from all collision events are looked at together.

"Such symmetry-violating bubbles are of crucial interest in the early, high-temperature history of the universe, where analogous bubbles are speculated to have played a central role in producing the preponderance of matter over antimatter in today's universe, enabling our existence," Vigdor said.

The disappearing hints of charge separation may be another signal that the lower-energy RHIC collisions are no longer producing QGP. But it's also conceivable that the hints arise instead from a "background" phenomenon that is related to the almond-like shape of the overlap region formed when two spherical gold ions collide in not quite head-on fashion.

Head-on collisions of football-shaped uranium ions aligned in upright positions like footballs set for kick-off -- conducted for the first time during the 2012 RHIC run, and made possible by a new ion source at RHIC -- are allowing scientists to study the effects of this almond-like interaction region without the strong surrounding magnetic field also produced in the off-center gold-gold collisions (which is necessary for the interesting charge-separation signal).

Results so far, reported by STAR physicists at Quark Matter 2012, seem to rule out the role of the background effect. If subsequent analysis confirms this early finding, the uranium-uranium collisions will provide further evidence for the symmetry-violating bubble interpretation of the gold-gold data, and for the disappearance of QGP at the lower RHIC energies.

From ordinary matter to plasma

The way quarks and gluons are arranged in ordinary matter affects how the plasma forms, and also modifies production of experimental probes of the plasma's properties. Teasing out effects of the plasma on these probes requires good knowledge of the probes before they encounter QGP.

To get that important information, the RHIC experiments have collected a large data set from collisions of gold ions with deuterons (the nuclei of heavy hydrogen).

At Quark Matter 2012, PHENIX physicists report that there are fewer high-momentum single hadrons and collections of hadrons called "jets" produced in dead-on central deuteron-gold collisions than more glancing deuteron-gold collisions.

"We expect jet suppression in quark-gluon plasma, because jets lose energy in dense matter such as the plasma," said PHENIX spokesperson Barbara Jacak, a physicist at Stony Brook University. "But this result shows that we have to correct for this initial state effect when figuring out how much the plasma suppresses the production of jets."

The initial state is related to the arrangement of quarks and gluons deep inside the gold nucleus, which some theories predict could be a condensed form of gluons called color-glass condensate, as hinted at in earlier results published by PHENIX.

The force between quarks and antiquarks

Other new RHIC measurements reported at Quark Matter concern the probability of heavy quarks (bottom and charm) and their anti-matter counterparts pairing up to form bound states called "quarkonia" within the QGP and in the "cold" nuclear matter probed in the deuteron-gold collisions.

QCD tells us that the force between a quark and an antiquark increases in strength as they are pulled apart, as though they were connected by an invisible rubber band. But the strength of this force should be reduced in QGP. So physicists expect the formation of quarkonia to also be reduced in QGP, with the probability of finding such species decreasing with larger-size bound states.

The STAR experiment reported new results consistent with this expectation by studying different size bound states of bottom quarks and antiquarks. PHENIX has studied suppression of bound states of charm and anti-charm quarks in various beam combinations, both with and without plasma formation. New results indicate that their formation is already suppressed in collisions of deuterons with gold nuclei, when no QGP is formed.

"This reflects both the reduced production rates for heavy quarks and the fact that the bound state sometimes breaks up as it passes through normal (cold) nuclear matter," said Jacak. "It is crucial to quantify this if we are to understand QGP effects on the binding," she said.

"These new results on the phase boundary, symmetry-violating bubbles, initial state effects, and the production of quark-antiquark bound states illustrate how scientists are exploiting RHIC's unique versatility for precision determinations of the properties of quark-gluon plasma," Vigdor said. "It is this versatility, in combination with dramatic advances we've made in the rate of collisions provided at RHIC, that will allow our scientists in the coming decade to answer the pointed questions raised by RHIC's exciting discoveries about this early universe matter."

Does Coffee Decrease Insulin Sensitivity? | Mark's Daily Apple

coffee2In today?s edition of Dear Mark, I cover two topics near and dear to many of your hearts. First, I discuss the interaction between coffee intake and insulin. Does coffee stimulate its secretion? Does it impair insulin?s function, or our body?s reaction to it? Find out how you should approach coffee on a Primal Blueprint eating plan. Then, I explore the suitability of dietary fat in the post-workout meal. Does it belong? Should you be stocking skim milk, de-fatted chicken breast, non-fat yogurt, and cartons of egg whites for your post-workout meals? If you?ve just lifted something heavy, should you therefore shun the yolks and fear the fat for the rest of the day? Find out below.

Let?s go.

Does coffee raise insulin levels? A lot of contradictory stuff out there. Hoping you could get to the bottom of it. Also, how does it affect GABA?

Thanks

Odin

What makes coffee research so confusing is that a lot of it is actually caffeine research. You see, researchers love isolating whole food constituents to avoid confounding variables. It?s easier to get a definitive result about caffeine than it is to get one about coffee, because coffee contains huge and diverse levels of antioxidant compounds. If you don?t, and coffee has a health effect, how do you know if it?s the caffeine or something else in coffee causing the effect? That?s helpful, but most of us are drinking coffee ? not popping caffeine pills. So, while caffeine is definitely one of the main active compounds in coffee, it?s not the only one. Adjust your interpretation of ?coffee? research accordingly.

That said, both caffeine and coffee have been shown to exert negative effects on insulin sensitivity. Not on insulin itself, though. As standalone substances (without a meal to accompany them), neither caffeine nor coffee have an independent effect on insulin secretion.

But insulin sensitivity, the efficiency with which your body handles incoming glucose? Yeah. Caffeine tends to reduce it. It?s not necessarily a terrible thing, though, when you consider why this occurs. Caffeine increases adrenaline, which increases lipolysis ? the liberation of fatty acids from body fat. The increased sense of energy you get from coffee is partly caused by the increased availability of energy in the form of free fatty acids. Of course, an increase in free fatty acids shooting around your body causes a subsequent ? and necessary ? drop in insulin sensitivity to allow you to actually burn the fat. It all makes perfect sense when you consider the entire picture, but it sounds pretty scary out of context.

Despite all the clinical trials showing that acute intakes of caffeine and coffee tend to reduce insulin sensitivity, the overwhelming majority of the observational literature finds that coffee is linked to lower body weight and protection from type 2 diabetes. Heck, heavy coffee drinking is even linked to protection against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, an affliction characterized by insulin resistance. And although what I?ve said about correlation and causation in the past holds true in this case (even though it?s supporting something that we might like), the connection is undeniably interesting, especially when you consider that heavy coffee drinking is universally lauded as unhealthy and that habitual coffee drinkers are probably more likely to smoke, stay up late, and eat bad food. Perhaps there is a mechanism there (one suggestion in the NAFLD paper is the antioxidant content of coffee).

Part of it stems from the fact that habituation to a behavior affects the effects of that behavior. You know how once you?ve been drinking coffee for awhile, you don?t really get the ?buzz? anymore? You still love (need) the stuff, but it?s not so much a stimulant as it is a normalizer. Well, the coffee buzz comes partially from adrenaline, the secretion of which drinking coffee promotes. Adrenaline is also a potent stimulator of lipolysis, the release of free fatty acids from adipose tissue. Since the liberated fatty acids are causing the temporary insulin resistance, and the fatty acids are liberated by adrenaline, and the adrenaline buzz is lessened with habitual coffee drinking, maybe the insulin resistance is similarly lessened when you?re a coffee fiend. Sounds sensible, right, but what does the research say?

Sure enough, when you give overweight, generally healthy habitual coffee drinkers five more cups a day and measure their ?biological risk factors for type 2 diabetes,? things look a little different. Their insulin sensitivity not only stays the same, but their risk factors actually improve. Markers of both liver function and adipose tissue function were improved after upping their coffee intake.

What does all this stuff mean for real world coffee fans?

  • Moderate your carb intake when drinking coffee. Some fruit and maybe even a bit of sweet potato hash can be okay, especially if you?re glucose tolerant, but for the most part, stick to eggs and bacon with your coffee in the morning. And whatever you do, don?t be one of those pudgy carb-loading cyclists clad in spandex I see at the cafe quaffing coffee and pounding kruellers. That?s not a good combo.
  • Get up and move around a bit when you drink. Since that coffee has just liberated a bunch of fatty acids from your adipose tissue, use them! Go for a walk, take a stroll around the office, do some gardening, hit the trails, ride your bike, play with your kids. Just move. If you don?t, the bulk of those fatty acids will simply be recycled back into your body fat.
  • Remember that coffee isn?t just caffeine. It is a whole plant food/drink with hundreds of bioactive compounds beyond just caffeine, like chlorogenic acid, which may have protective effects against type 2 diabetes. Those compounds come from and are affected by the environment, soil, elevation, climate, and region in and at which the coffee was grown. Even the roasting temperature changes the antioxidant content and composition of the beans. The taste and health effects of coffee thusly depend on dozens of factors, and that?s why coffee has different effects on different people as reflected across dozens of studies. Coffee isn?t coffee isn?t coffee. The coffee that tanked those people?s insulin sensitivity in that study may have been a mass market blend from Starbucks, while the single origin coffee from a little Guatemalan plantation could have totally different effects (or it could be the other way around).

Of course, as the ruler of Asgard, father of Thor, and a mighty Norse god, you can probably get away with eating tons of carbs with your coffee (served in a drinking horn, no doubt).

Hi Mark,

I have read somewhere that fat intake is not recommended post workout because it slows the ingestion of protein and carbs. Is it true? If yes, can I take your protein supplement post workout?

Thanks

Najam

Most training blogs recommend that post-workout fat intake be kept relatively low. There are a couple reasons usually given:

  1. If you?re trying to gain muscle mass, you?re going to be eating big after your workouts. Assuming you?re eating a ton of protein and carbs to jack up your insulin levels for the anabolic effect (insulin, after all, shuttles all sorts of nutrients into your cells ? protein and glycogen into muscles, for example, after a workout), and your calories are high (to facilitate weight gain) enough, any ?extra? fat in the meal has a good chance of being shuttled into fat cells. Thus, from that perspective, fat is ?wasted? calories.
  2. If you?re trying to shuttle nutrients into muscle cells, you want insulin as high as it can get, and ?everyone knows? that even a modicum of fat will blunt the post-workout insulin spike. Right? Not exactly. One study found that a mixed meal of 47% carbs, 26% protein, and 27% fat ? certainly lower fat than most Primal people eat normally, but definitely not a ?fat free? post-workout meal ? increased insulin levels to 3x fasting at 30 minutes and 5x fasting at 60 minutes (PDF). That?s certainly enough insulin for training adaptations, I?d say. Another study found that post-workout whole milk actually led to greater levels of muscle protein synthesis than post-workout fat-free milk, even though the fat-free stuff had more protein than the whole stuff. Huh, it?s almost like milk is?supposed to be whole.

Clearly, some fat after the workout isn?t going to kill you or render your workout useless (and it might even increase protein utilization, at least when it?s consumed as a whole food). And although I?m definitely biased ? the fat in my protein supplement (Primal Fuel) comes from coconut milk ? coconut milk is rich in medium chain triglycerides, which seems more acutely beneficial to exercise performance than longer-chain saturated fats, at least in rodents.

Stick to the fat inherent in your food ? don?t fear meat, fatty fish, and whole eggs ? while avoiding dumping copious amounts of butter on your post-workout meal and you?ll be okay.

That?s it for today, guys. Send along any more questions you have and feel free to leave some in the comment section. Thanks for reading!

Great Britain boxer Luke Campbell takes gold in ... - BBC World News

Great Britain boxer and Metro columnist Luke Campbell secures the team?s 28th gold medal of the London 2012 Olympics by winning the bantamweight title. Luke Campbell (blue) beat Ireland?s John Joe Nevin 14-11 (Picture: AP) The fighter from Hull beat Ireland?s John Joe Nevin 14-11, repeating his victory over the same opponent at last year?s world championships, to claim Great Britain?s first gold medal in the weight division since 1908. Campbell?s more incisive shots saw him go 5-3 up after the first round but his opponent battled back in the second round, with a particularly sweet upper cut and long-range right hander closing the points gap to 9-8. Unsurprisingly, with the scores so close and such a prize up for grabs, the third round was a tense affair until a perfectly-timed left from Campbell had Nevin on the deck as he lined up a right of his own. Having gained the upper hand, Campbell refused to concede any ground and by the time the cards were checked, it was already clear he had done enough to win.

Electrical Safety At Work

Electrical safety at work requires constant care by all workers and business owners to minimise the risks. Working with electricity is dangerous but following some simple, straightforward tips, the likelihood and impact of an accident can be substantially reduced.

1) Visually check that the electrical appliance is in good condition with no damage and is complete. Any damaged items need to be marked as "Do not Use" and stored in a location where they cannot be accessed until they are properly repaired or disposed of.

2) Properly maintained equipment is essential and should take place to ensure equipment works safely as required. Also check that electrical appliance is being used for what it is designed for. Manufacturer's guidelines should be consulted to ensure that it is being used as recommended and how to use safely in operation.

3) Do not overload power points with extension devices and only use one extension lead on one socket and do not daisy chain them. Fully un-wind the extension lead and do not allow the cable to be trapped in doorways or other obstacles.

4) When using electrically powered tools, battery operated ones are safer.

5) Use electrical equipment in dry surroundings. If equipment needs to be used outdoors or in wet surroundings, appropriate control measures need to be in place. Only staff who have received appropriate training to prevent injury to themselves and others should be used.

6) Always use a Residual Current Device (RCD) and plug in types should be plugged into the main socket. Test the RCD before use to ensure it is working properly.

7) Ensure only tested (either visually or PAT tested) equipment is used in the workplace. This means that mobile phone chargers, fans, heaters and other items brought in from home, need to be tested before being used.

8) An emergency cut off switch is provided and is easily accessible and clearly identified on each machine, or area, that can cause an electric shock. The switch needs to be tested on a regular basis to ensure it remains effective.

9) Working near electric cables. Some cables are obvious but others buried in walls, ceilings or underground are not. Check wiring diagrams if possible or use a cable locator to find cables.

10) If an electrical supply cannot be turned off, specific safeguards need to be in place before any work starts. A Business owner cannot assume that the employee will follow procedures and needs to ensure that electrical supply is only worked on when it has been confirmed as not-live.

We cannot overemphasis the need for every business owner to have a strong stance on electrical safety at work and, by following the steps outlined above, the risks of injury will be minimised.
