You must protect your computer. Computer technology is a two sided story. Using a computer we can now do many things, such as check our bank, pay bills and even do our weekly shop. On the other hand, it can also grant the same access to those who aren?t supposed to get it. Hacking is now one of the biggest criminal industries.
There is nothing funny about computer hacking. Today?s hackers aren?t the pimply-faced teen rebels that you might be thinking of. The introduction of using personal information online has allowed individuals to steal this information and make a living through other peoples hard earning. Still there seems to be only a small amount of protection.
Computer security is a topic which everyone needs to know about in today?s world. You can reduce the probability of experiencing identity theft by making your computer as hacker-proof as possible. Some computer security software will be useful, along with some common knowledge.
1. Obtain some computer protection software including an anti-virus and anti-spyware. This type of software goes through all of your information and looks for any malicious code that could be harmful to your PC. The code that the virus programs execute can very easily make your computer unuseable and allow back door access to a hacker.
2. The computer shouldn?t be used for storage sensitive data anyway. By not storing any important data there is nothing for these harmful programs to retreive from your system. You can expect the programs to search for anything like a credit card number, and other information like names and addresses. So if you do not save them on your pc in the first place, the hacker cannot find them.
3. Don?t open files without scanning them with an anti-virus/anti-spyware program. Generally you used to be able to trust your friends to send you unharmful programs. Viruses can now spread into every file on a system, meaning anything you accept will harm your computer. This means that even a song, or video sent to you by your best friend could be harmful. Be safe and scan each and every file you download from the Internet or receive through email regardless of where it came from.
4. Make a wall between you and others. Anti-virus is only one level of protection. Firewalls act as an even further level of security. These firewalls have the ability to watch what information is coming in or out of the computer and check it to make sure it is not malicious.
5. Don?t click on website links in spam messages. In an effort to obtain personal information, some spammers will send email that asks you to click on a link. You will be asked to click on a link to visit a website, and these emails often look like they have come from a bank or similar service. Sometimes the links are harmless and attempt to con the reader into volunteering personal information (credit card number), but other times the links attempt to download harmful software onto a computer.
