Assume the Position: What Works Best for Sleeping

There?s no one perfect sleep position ? some of us are back sleeper, belly sleepers or side sleepers, but sleep experts say that there are certain benefits for one position over another, according to Health.com.

Sleeping on your back is best overall for preventing neck and back pain, reducing acid reflux, minimizing wrinkles, and, um, maintaining perky breasts (since their weight is fully supported when you sleep). However, it?s the worst position to sleep in if you are a snorer.? ?Snoring is usually most frequent and severe when sleeping on the back,? says Eric Olson, M.D., co-director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine.

If you are pregnant, your best bet may be to sleep on your side, a position that also can help prevent neck and back pain, acid reflux, and snoring. Sleeping in the fetal position can also make you snore less and help you get comfortable during pregnancy, but it also can cause joint pain and ? like side sleeping ? may give you wrinkles by causing you to smush your face into the pillow.

Worst of all is sleeping on your stomach. You probably won?t snore in this position, but you?re far more likely to wake up in pain because of the pressure put on your joints, muscles, spine and neck.
