Senior Accountant - Churchill Downs Incorporated (Louisville, KY)

SUMMARY:

Self-starter with the initiative to hit the ground running! Applies knowledge of accounting principles to record month end closing entries, analyze financial information and prepare account reconciliations as a part of the controllership function within Churchill Downs Incorporated, a publically traded company which operates four racetracks, three casinos, an industry-leading online pari-mutuel wagering operation, and a variety of other businesses. We are seeking an accounting professional with the following qualities: attention to detail, deadline-oriented, the ability to research and resolve accounting issues and analyze financial results. Prefer CPA with two ? four years accounting experience in large or public company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Senior accountant responsible for the preparation and analysis of financial statements for two of the Company?s business units: Churchill Downs Racetrack and Harlow?s Casino and Resort. Duties include the preparation of journal entries, the coordination of month-end accruals with department managers, the review of general ledger activity, the overall month-end financial review and analysis of each unit?s financial results, and the preparation of monthly account reconciliations on a timely and accurate basis.
  • Functional property & equipment (PP&E) accountant for all of the Company?s business units, overseeing PP&E with approximate net book value of $500 million. Duties include maintaining general and subledgers for all business units, recording activity related to additions, disposals, transfers, depreciation, and calculating gain//losses on disposal. In addition, the accountant will coordinate the approval of capital projects and maintain the Company?s capital tracking information. Also, the accountant will assess fixed assets for impairment on a regular basis and provide other fixed asset analyses for the Company?s acquisitions and other non-recurring capital activities.
  • Functional payroll accountant for all of the Company?s business units. Position will be responsible for recording payroll activities, as prepared by the Company?s third-party payroll administrator, within the company?s financial records. Specific duties include transferring data from third-party files into the general ledger, reviewing monthly summarized salary expense for reasonableness and recording salary accruals at month-end.
  • Assists in the accumulation of data and preparation of financial reports for the quarterly and annual Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Perform research and appies knowledge of technical accounting literature.
  • Determine priorities and timing of accounting projects and other responsibilities to be completed during the non-closing weeks of each month. Assist finance leaders in performing special financial projects as needed. Assist corporate departments with financial information inquires.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor?s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in accounting from four-year college or university and two to four years? related experience. CPA preferred.
