KABUL, Afghanistan - The Taliban Monday took responsibility for a bomb blast in Wardaj province, south of Kabul, in which six NATO members, believed to be American troops, were killed.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the soldiers died when their tank ran over the bomb around 8 pm Sunday in Wardak province.

Coalition and Afghan forces are trying to secure areas of Wardak that insurgents use as gateway into the Afghan capital to inflict to stage attacks on Afghan government and NATO targets.

German Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, said the six Americans were killed when their armored vehicle struck a bomb planted on the road in eastern Afghanistan.

He said a seventh American soldier was killed in a separate insurgent attack in the south.

Wardak provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Qayum Baqizoi said that after the explosion in Jalrez district, a coalition airstrike killed a local Taliban commander and wounded three insurgents.

Though the target date of NATO's handover of security responsibility to local forces is less than 18 months away, there is no let up in Taliban attacks. On the contrary, the insurgents have stepped up their attacks this summer to take back key areas

On Monday afternoon, three suicide bombers riding in a three-wheeled vehicle blew themselves up in Kandahar city. Three policemen and two children were killed in the attack, while 18 policemen and 12 civilians were wounded. said Kandahar provincial spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal.

Faisal said that authorities suspect that the attackers were headed towards the police headquarters but the bomb exploded prematurely.

A short time later, more suicide bombers tried to attack the police headquarters in Kandahar, but they were gunned down by police before they could enter the compound, Faisal said. The incident was still being investigated.

A total of 14 suicide attackers, who fired at police for about two hours, blew themselves up or were shot dead by police, Kandahar officials said.

A suicide bomber on a bicycle also attacked a police headquarters building in Shibirghan, the capital of Jawzjan province in the north, wounding 26 people including two policemen, Provincial governor Mohammad Aleem Saaie said.

In the Musa Qala district of Helmand province, five policemen were killed while responding to a gun battle being waged against insurgents early at a checkpoint.

Daoud Ahmadi, the spokesman in Helmand, said a group of Taliban fighters attacked the police checkpoint at about 3 am.

Afghan police called for reinforcements, but one of the police vehicles hit a roadside bomb, killing the five policemen.

Ahmadi says three other policemen were wounded in the four-hour gun battle against the insurgents. He says the bodies of 20 insurgents were recovered from the battlefield.

In another incident, authorities said gunmen assassinated a chief prosecutor Sahar Gul in Ghazni province in eastern Afghanistan Monday morning as he drove to work, according to Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, the deputy provincial governor.

Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai Monday condemned the public execution of a married Afghan woman, accused of running off with another man, calling it "an unforgiveable crime".

A video of the killing, which surfaced recently, showed the woman being shot multiple times while spectators cheered.. Public executions of women was routinely carried out by the Islamic Taliban regime before its collapse in 2001.

Police in Shinwari district of Parwan province claim the woman was executed by Taliban more than 10 days back.
