Expect to See 4000 BMW?s on London Streets During 2012 Olympics

BMW?has a very interesting sponsorship deal with the London 2012 Olympics. The automaker will ship some 4,000 vehicles from Germany to London, primarily wagons, 3-Series and 5-Series sedans, to supply VIP transportation for the games. This maybe contrary to the promise that these would be the ?greenest? Olympics in history but from what we hear all the cars meet the standard of greenhouse gas emission (120 g/km of CO2) set by the London Organizing Committee and 200 of the 4,000 vehicles are EVs.

About 250 of the VIPs expected to attend the Olympics will have chauffeur-driven BMW s for their personal use, while the others will be a part of a pool shared between members of the ?Olympic family? that includes officials, sponsors, dignitaries and athletes. Accommodating 4,000 BMW sedans is definitely going to create a whole lot of pollution and the level of sponsorship has already drawn criticism from the eco-conscious members of the London Assembly Transport Committee. However, the city is establishing 30 miles of special VIP-only lanes, to ensure the chauffeur driven vehicles manage to navigate London traffic. After the Games, the company says that it will sell the cars on the used market in right-hand-drive markets.
