My usual pick-me-up on a Monday morning is a cup of coffee. Today it's going to be something very different.

I've been up since 6?am. I've had a breath test for alcohol, a urine test for drugs and a psychological test for mental health. Then I'm handed a red pill and a glass of water. I swallow it? and I'm told to relax. Which is easier said than done when you don't know if you've just taken vitamin?C or 83 milligrams of pure MDMA.

Half an hour later I'm inside an fMRI brain scanner, my head clamped in place and a visor over my face. It's noisy and claustrophobic but I'm reassured by the panic button in my hand and a voice from the control room.

And then I start to feel it. A tingle of energy, like pins and needles, starts in the pit of my stomach and rises slowly, not unpleasant but not exactly pleasurable either. It builds in intensity, then breaks into a wave of bliss. The placebo effect can be powerful but when it happens again, I'm in no doubt. I'm coming up.

I'm taking part in a groundbreaking study on MDMA, the drug commonly known as ecstasy. The research is run by David Nutt of Imperial College London, a former government adviser and one of the few UK researchers licensed to study class-A drugs.

His main aim is to discover what MDMA does to the human brain, something that, remarkably, has never been done before. A second goal is to study MDMA as a therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. The experiment is also being filmed for a Channel?4 documentary called Drugs Live: The Ecstasy Trial, which will be broadcast in the UK next week.

Over the next hour I ride ferocious surges of serotonin that balloon me higher and higher, while trying to focus on a series of tasks. The fMRI machine is going through its repertoire of rackets ? rhythmic clankings, throaty roars and what sounds like organ music. At times I feel amazing, at others panicky. Keeping my head still is very, very hard. But I ride it out.

When I'm pulled out 90 minutes later, the drug effects have plateaued. My mind is clear, my movement feels smooth and, aside from some jaw clenching, I feel content and sociable. And surprisingly psychedelic: a purple door is throbbing before my eyes.

I perform psychological tests, but my heart isn't in it. I'm more interested in chatting to the psychologists, doctors, nurses and porters. Finally I head home, and wake up the following day feeling pretty good.

Robin Carhart-Harris, a member of Nutt's team, later tells me they have now scanned 23 brains and have some preliminary results. While inside the machine, one of the tasks involved thinking about five of my most positive and negative memories. I rated these in terms of their vividness and associated emotion during the high and later that day.

The hypothesis was that MDMA would make the negative memories less painful. "We saw a boosted brain response to positive memories, and a weaker response to negative ones," says Carhart-Harris. "It fits the idea that MDMA can help people access negative memories without being overwhelmed by them and they might be able to change the way they feel about what happened."

A week after my first scan I return to go through the same procedure. As I swallow the pill I wonder briefly if last week was some kind of amazing placebo effect.

Stocks slip from near five-year high

Updated at 9:30 a.m. ET: Stocks moved lower Monday after the best two weeks for the S&P 500 in three months left the index at its highest level in nearly five years, with investors turning their attention to the economy and instability in the Middle East.

Stocks rose for a fourth session on Friday after the Federal Reserve took bold action to spur the economy that could keep equities buoyed in the coming months. The move followed a decision by the European Central Bank to support debt-ridden euro zone nations by purchasing their debt.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the Afghan capital on Monday in the latest of demonstrations that have swept the Muslim world, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Iran would reach the brink of being able to build a nuclear bomb in just six or seven months.

"The September blues are about to hit us," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York. "There are a lot of geo-political concerns heating up and I suspect they could be one of the reasons why we could be set for a temporary pullback."

World stocks muted as Fed measures boost fades

HONG KONG (AP) ? Global stock markets were muted Monday as the boost faded from the Federal Reserve's announcement last week of new measures to energize the U.S. economy.

Oil fell, reversing earlier gains, while the dollar came off a four-month low versus the euro.

In early European trading, France's CAC 40 dropped 0.3 percent to 3,569.61 and the FTSE 100 index of leading British companies lost 0.2 percent to 5,904.13. Germany's DAX fell 0.1 percent to 7,405.03.

U.S. stocks were poised to fall. Dow futures were down 0.1 percent to 13,501.00 and broader S&P 500 futures shed 0.2 percent to 1,456.20.

In Asian trading, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.1 percent to close at 20,658.11 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 0.3 percent to end at 2,002.35.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.3 percent higher to 4,402.50.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, New Zealand, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia rose. Markets in Japan were closed for a holiday.

Indian stocks rose after the country's central bank cut the cash reserve ratio and the government opened its huge market to foreign retailers in a bid to kick-start flagging economic growth.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 2.1 percent to 2,078.50 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index plunged 2.9 percent to 864.19.

Global stock markets rallied late last week after the Fed announced it planned to buy $40 billion of mortgage bonds a month for as long as necessary as part of a strategy known as quantitative easing aimed at encouraging people to borrow money and spend it. The Fed also extended its pledge to keep short-term interest rates low until 2015, a year longer than its previous target.

While investors were still in the mood to take on more risk, "the risk of profit taking has grown given the pace and magnitude of recent moves," strategists at Credit Agricole CIB said in a research note.

Andrew Sullivan, principal sales trader at Piper Jaffray Asia Securities, said this week was a key one for stock markets because investors have now seen most of the possible stimulus measures available to policymakers in major economies ? with the possible exception of China.

"If markets don't rally and volumes don't increase this week then they are unlikely to during the rest of the year," Sullivan said. He said he had doubts that investors would return to the markets.

Uncertainties include the European Union's simmering debt crisis and the state of the U.S. economic recovery, he said. Sullivan also speculated that Chinese authorities could unveil economic stimulus measures ahead of a Communist Party congress expected this autumn to hand over power to a younger generation. The date for that meeting has still not been set.

Hong Kong property companies fell after authorities announced more measures on Friday to tighten requirements for mortgage borrowers to prevent overheating in the property market. Sino Land Co. fell 1.8 percent and New World Development Co. fell 1.3 percent. Henderson Land Development Co. fell 0.6 percent.

Crude for October delivery was down 12 cents to $98.88 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished up 69 cents to $99 per barrel in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3098 from $1.3117 late Friday. The dollar rose to 78.36 Japanese yen from 77.30 yen.

Scientists differentiate chemical bonds in individual molecules for first time using noncontact atomic force microscopy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 16, 2012) ? IBM scientists have been able to differentiate the chemical bonds in individual molecules for the first time using a technique known as noncontact atomic force microscopy (AFM).

The results push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at the smallest scale and could be important for studying graphene devices, which are currently being explored by both industry and academia for applications including high-bandwidth wireless communication and electronic displays.

"We found two different contrast mechanisms to distinguish bonds. The first one is based on small differences in the force measured above the bonds. We expected this kind of contrast but it was a challenge to resolve," said IBM scientist Leo Gross. "The second contrast mechanism really came as a surprise: Bonds appeared with different lengths in AFM measurements. With the help of ab initio calculations we found that the tilting of the carbon monoxide molecule at the tip apex is the cause of this contrast."

As reported in the cover story of the Sept. 14 issue of Science magazine, IBM Research scientists imaged the bond order and length of individual carbon-carbon bonds in C₆₀, also known as a buckyball for its football shape and two planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which resemble small flakes of graphene. The PAHs were synthesized by Centro de Investigacion en Quimica Bioloxica e Materiais Moleculares (CIQUS) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Toulouse.

The individual bonds between carbon atoms in such molecules differ subtly in their length and strength. All the important chemical, electronic, and optical properties of such molecules are related to the differences of bonds in the polyaromatic systems. Now, for the first time, these differences were detected for both individual molecules and bonds. This can increase basic understanding at the level of individual molecules, important for research on novel electronic devices, organic solar cells, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In particular, the relaxation of bonds around defects in graphene as well as the changing of bonds in chemical reactions and in excited states could potentially be studied.

As in their earlier research (Science 2009, 325, 1110) the IBM scientists used an atomic force microscope (AFM) with a tip that is terminated with a single carbon monoxide (CO) molecule. This tip oscillates with a tiny amplitude above the sample to measure the forces between the tip and the sample, such as a molecule, to create an image. The CO termination of the tip acts as a powerful magnifying glass to reveal the atomic structure of the molecule, including its bonds. This made it possible to distinguish individual bonds that differ only by 3 picometers or 3 ? 10^-12 meters, which is about one-hundredth of an atom's diameter.

In previous research the team succeeded in imaging the chemical structure of a molecule, but not the subtle differences of the bonds. Discriminating bond order is close to the current resolution limit of the technique and often other effects obscure the contrast related to bond order. Therefore the scientists had to select and synthesize molecules in which perturbing background effects could be ruled out.

To corroborate the experimental findings and gain further insight into the exact nature of the contrast mechanisms, the team performed first-principles density functional theory calculations. Thereby they calculated the tilting of the CO molecule at the tip apex that occurs during imaging. They found how this tilting yields a magnification and the very sharp images of the bonds.

This research was funded within the framework of several European projects including ARTIST, HERODOT, CEMAS, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Regional Government of Galicia.

Samsung has recently taken the wraps off its second generation phablet, the Galaxy Note II, and the dust around the announcement is yet to settle. Even though the brand has just announced its second generation Galaxy Note, it appears that it is preparing a variant of it with dual-SIM capabilities.
