SUMMARY:

Self-starter with the initiative to hit the ground running! Applies knowledge of accounting principles to record month end closing entries, analyze financial information and prepare account reconciliations as a part of the controllership function within Churchill Downs Incorporated, a publically traded company which operates four racetracks, three casinos, an industry-leading online pari-mutuel wagering operation, and a variety of other businesses. We are seeking an accounting professional with the following qualities: attention to detail, deadline-oriented, the ability to research and resolve accounting issues and analyze financial results. Prefer CPA with two ? four years accounting experience in large or public company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Senior accountant responsible for the preparation and analysis of financial statements for two of the Company?s business units: Churchill Downs Racetrack and Harlow?s Casino and Resort. Duties include the preparation of journal entries, the coordination of month-end accruals with department managers, the review of general ledger activity, the overall month-end financial review and analysis of each unit?s financial results, and the preparation of monthly account reconciliations on a timely and accurate basis.
• Functional property & equipment (PP&E) accountant for all of the Company?s business units, overseeing PP&E with approximate net book value of $500 million. Duties include maintaining general and subledgers for all business units, recording activity related to additions, disposals, transfers, depreciation, and calculating gain//losses on disposal. In addition, the accountant will coordinate the approval of capital projects and maintain the Company?s capital tracking information. Also, the accountant will assess fixed assets for impairment on a regular basis and provide other fixed asset analyses for the Company?s acquisitions and other non-recurring capital activities.
• Functional payroll accountant for all of the Company?s business units. Position will be responsible for recording payroll activities, as prepared by the Company?s third-party payroll administrator, within the company?s financial records. Specific duties include transferring data from third-party files into the general ledger, reviewing monthly summarized salary expense for reasonableness and recording salary accruals at month-end.
• Assists in the accumulation of data and preparation of financial reports for the quarterly and annual Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Perform research and appies knowledge of technical accounting literature.
• Determine priorities and timing of accounting projects and other responsibilities to be completed during the non-closing weeks of each month. Assist finance leaders in performing special financial projects as needed. Assist corporate departments with financial information inquires.

Bachelor?s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in accounting from four-year college or university and two to four years? related experience. CPA preferred.

Exxon to buy Canada's Celtic Exploration for $2.64 billion

(Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp struck a deal to acquire Canadian oil and gas company Celtic Exploration Ltd for C$2.6 billion ($2.64 billion), aiming to grow its output and expand its asset base in western Canada.

The deal, announced Wednesday, will give the world's largest publicly traded energy company vast tracts in the liquids-rich Montney shale in the province of British Columbia, along with holdings in the Duvernay shale and other areas in the province of Alberta.

"This acquisition will add significant liquids-rich resources to our existing North American unconventional portfolio," Andrew Barry, president of ExxonMobil Canada, said in a statement.

Exxon and other global oil majors are buying more oil and gas assets in North America as they struggle to boost output in a sector where vast energy resources are located in and tightly controlled by countries like Brazil and Russia. Last month Exxon agreed to acquire Denbury Resources Inc's properties in the Bakken shale for $1.6 billion.

Exxon said its Canadian subsidiary, ExxonMobil Canada, would pay C$24.50 for each share of Celtic, a 35 percent premium to Celtic's closing price on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday. For each common share tendered, Celtic shareholders will also receive half a share in a new company led by Celtic's current management team.

The new company will house a gas property at Grand Cache, Alberta; a liquids-rich natural gas property at Inga, British Columbia; and an oil prospect at Karr, Alberta. Celtic said the net asset value per share of the new company is estimated to be about C$2.32, based on an independent engineering evaluation.

Exxon's bid is the latest in a wave of foreign takeovers in the energy rich provinces of Alberta and British Columbia in Western Canada, where the bulk of Celtic's assets are located.

The Canadian government is currently reviewing Chinese state-owned oil major CNOOC Ltd's C$15.1 billion bid for Nexen Inc, and Malaysian state oil company Petronas' C$5.2 billion bid for Progress Energy Resources Corp.

Including payments for Celtic's convertible debentures, and Celtic's bank debt and working capital obligations, the deal is valued at C$3.1 billion, Celtic said in a statement.

The deal has been unanimously approved by Celtic's board of directors.

Smoking in cars produces harmful pollutants at levels above WHO indoor air quality standards

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Smoking during car journeys pumps harmful particulate matter into the indoor air space at levels that far exceed World Health Organization guidance -- even when the windows are open or air conditioning is switched on -- finds the largest study of its kind, in Tobacco Control.

Such levels of exposure are likely to affect the health of any child passengers, say the authors.

Levels of fine particulate matter were measured every minute in the rear passenger area during typical car journeys made by smokers and non-smokers over a three day period.

The measurements were made using an aerosol monitor that is frequently deployed to assess second hand smoke exposure, placed at child head height.

Seventeen drivers, 14 of whom were smokers, made a total of 104 journeys, lasting from 5 to 70 minutes, with an average duration of 27 minutes.

The journeys were made in various locations across the West of Scotland and in and around Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft in the East of England.

Particulate matter levels were available for 83 journeys, of which 34 were smoke free. They averaged 7.4 ?g/m3 during non-smoking journeys, but were around 10 times as high (85 ?g/m3) during smoking journeys.

Levels of particulate matter were strongly linked to the numbers of cigarettes smoked. Levels peaked at an average of 385 ?g/m3, and on one occasion got as high as 880 ?g/m3.

Five of the smokers said they smoked 20 or more cigarettes a day; seven smoked between 10 and 19 a day; the rest smoked fewer than 10.

Smokers tended to open car windows to provide some ventilation, but levels of particulate matter still exceeded the maximum safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization of 25 ?g/m3 , at some point during all car journeys during which somebody smoked.

The authors point out that exposure to second hand smoke is linked to several children's health problems, including sudden infant death, middle ear disease, wheeze and asthma.

"Children are likely to be at greater risk from [second hand smoke] exposure due to their faster breathing rates, less developed immune system and their inability to move away from the source in many home and car settings," they say.

They endorse the recent report from the Royal College of Physicians Tobacco Advisory Group, which called for a ban on smoking in cars, in a bid to reduce the overall prevalence of smoking and the harms associated with exposure to second hand smoke.

Several other countries, including Canada, the US, Australia, Cyprus and South Africa have already introduced state or national legislation to ban smoking in cars in which children are passengers, they say.

Gene Vollnogle: 310 victories don't tell whole story of longtime Carson football coach

Beloved coach, who won 10 L.A. City Section titles (two with Banning) remembered for making difference on and off the field.

Sure, there were 310 career victories. There were also 10 L.A. City Section championships.

Which made the rare defeat at Carson High a bitter experience, always reflected immediately by Gene Vollnogle, but only before he got to the locker room.

"He was always steady, it was always a teachable moment," said one of his greatest performers, Al Washington. "A little bit more solemn, but even in victory he wasn't doing a dance. We didn't showboat. He always said, 'When you leave the locker room, show some class.'"

Generations of Carson High Colts and even some of his vanquished opponents gathered Saturday at Carson to pay tribute to Vollnogle, the coach for the first 28 years of the school's existence.

Coach, yes. And much more to those who paid tribute following Vollnogle's death on Sept. 6.

"I wouldn't be a man if it wasn't for that man," said George Malauulu, quarterback of the 1987 City finalist team.

In the quad in the middle of the Carson campus, about 200 friends, family members and the Colt family gathered. Pictures, posters recounting his victories, and simple tributes like a "Vollnogle 1" T-shirt were visible as the atmosphere took on

that of a reunion as much as a celebration.

And it wouldn't be Carson in the Vollnogle years without the looming presence of statistician extraordinaire, Tim Finney, a former teacher at the school.

He carried a folded paper listing the Vollnogle record, from his first 10 years at Banning - where he won two City crowns - to Carson, to his nine years as a JV coach at Los Alamitos High.

Years: 47. Wins: 384, Losses: 91. Ties: 1. Winning percentage: 80.78.

Yes, those are just the stats, man. This was about the man.

Vollnogle could be seen simply as the larger-than-life figure on the football field, ready to run his troops ragged with detail after detail. Sure, he had the look of the old-time coach down, from the shorts to the windbreaker and the whistle dangling from his neck.

A throwback? Maybe to some, but blessed with an inordinate amount of talent from the surrounding community, he was a coach who commanded attention, sometimes fear, and always respect.

But while he delivered the same message year after year to his players, he was never afraid to be on the cutting edge on the field.

The longtime Los Alamitos resident could go from a cloud-of-dust offense to an all-out passing scheme when many thought that would be crazy.

He pulled from a community of all walks of life. Your name could be Jimmy Sander, Samoa Samoa, Wesley Walker, Perry Klein, David Elecciri or Carlos Ruiz. You played football for Carson, you became a football player and more.

"What I remember most," Elecciri (1968) said, "was the tough, serious surface and the positive man on the inside."

And then Elecciri, who later coached with Vollnogle, would draw laughter by imitating his coach's famous mannerisms, from licking his fingers or jiggling his belt.

If there is a coveted season in Carson lore, it's the 1971 team that went 12-0, won the City title and was pronounced national champion.

That hit a member of that team, Kise Fitatoa, as he watched "Remember the Titans," the story of T.C. Williams High in Virginia that went undefeated in a time of racial strife. What struck Fitatoa was that in the movie, it was noted that T.C. Williams reached No. 2 in the nation.

Behind Carson.

"Coach Vollnogle, he was open-minded about some of those things. That's why he was such a great, great coach," Malauulu said. "It takes those kind of coaches to show the humility part of coaching.

"Some of these coaches nowadays - it would be a remedy for some of their problems.

"He was ahead of his time."

As intimidating as Vollnogle could be, he would always find time to allow the warm side to emerge.

After the Colts earned the 1988 City title with a 55-7 rout of rival Banning at the Coliseum, Vollnogle marveled at his team's ability to pick up huge chunks of yardage with two quarterbacks, Klein and Fred Gatlin, and shifty running back Errol Sapp, among others.

"It was zap, zap, zap, then zap 'em with Sapp," Vollnogle said, chuckling at his own words.

It was an overlooked side to his personality, but his daughter, Teri Hargreaves, had plenty of recollections.

"He did have a sense of humor," Hargreaves said. "There was one time when Carson was playing a (San Fernando) Valley school and the Valley school was not as diverse, let's say, as the Carson team. I think the Carson line at the time was made up mostly of Samoans, so one of the strategies was Dad had the Samoans get up and start chanting to intimidate the boys from the Valley, and it did the trick.

"Coaching to him was fun and he always said that playing football had to be fun. He had a great sense of humor."

And Vollnogle was no small figure in turning the culture around for the Polynesian community, particularly, the burgeoning tight-knit Samoans in Carson.

"He gave us opportunity," Malauulu said. "He opened the door. He allowed us to kind of be who we wanted to be at that point in time.

"A lot of the guys from the early years were coming from American Samoa just to come to school here. If you went to school back home in American Samoa, as far as you trying to obtain a scholarship, slim chances and if it was, it would probably be one out of the whole island.

"We all knew once you got up there, Vollnogle would take care of you and sure enough, it was definitely the truth."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Anibal Sanchez gave a performance against New York that the Detroit Tigers have come to expect from Justin Verlander.

The Tigers' ace is next in line for a chance to toy with the Yankees' suddenly dreadful offense.

Sanchez shut down a Yankees lineup minus the injured Derek Jeter, Detroit scored twice after a missed call by an ump and won without any extra-inning drama, beating New York 3-0 Sunday for a commanding 2-0 lead in the American League championship series.

"Sanchez showed what we know about our starters, that they're really good," Tigers outfielder Quintin Berry said. "A lot of people outside our clubhouse stop at Verlander when they talk about our starting pitching, but we just hope they all keep doing what they're doing."

Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Detroit, with Verlander, the reigning AL MVP, starting for the Tigers against Phil Hughes. Verlander went 2-0 in the division series versus Oakland, including a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in the decisive Game 5.

Hitting .192 in the ALCS after putting up a paltry .216 average against Baltimore in the division series, the Yankees have a real challenge ahead.

"Obviously, he's a great pitcher," designated hitter Raul Ibanez said of Verlander. "We have to go out there and battle and compete and play the best that we can and do what we're capable of doing."

New York did little against Sanchez. He struck out seven and was never in any real trouble.

In the first inning when the Yankees put runners on first and second, he took care of it by reaching around his back to snare a grounder for the final out.

"He was terrific," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "This is a tough place to pitch with a tough lineup and a short porch. And a whole bunch of left-handed hitters, it is not easy. That was quite a feat."

New York starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched perfect ball into the sixth inning to keep pace with Sanchez. But Robinson Cano and the slumping Yankees hitters were no match for the 28-year-old right-hander a day after their captain broke his ankle in the 12th inning of a 6-4 loss.

"I try to think backwards," Sanchez said. "If the count calls for a fastball, I throw a different pitch. If the count calls for a different pitch, I throw a fastball. I try to mix my speeds."

Making his second postseason start, Sanchez threw three-hit ball deep into the game to make Leyland's job easier. Closer Jose Valverde gave up four runs in the ninth Saturday and, only hours later, Leyland said the righty wouldn't close Game 2.

Delmon Young gave Sanchez his first run of support in the playoffs with a fielder's choice in the seventh. The Tigers then scored twice in the eighth after second base umpire Jeff Nelson missed a call on a two-out tag. Yankees manager Joe Girardi argued, and was ejected on his 48th birthday.

"The hand did not get in before the tag," Nelson said after seeing a replay. "The call was incorrect."

The Tigers led 1-0 in the eighth and had Omar Infante on first with two outs. Austin Jackson singled and when Infante took a wide turn at second, right fielder Nick Swisher threw behind him.

Cano made a swipe tag as Infante dove head-first back to second. Cano missed Infante's arm but caught his body, replays clearly showed. But Nelson called Infante safe.

"I think the umpire got confused 'cause he saw my hand, something with my hand made him think I was safe," Infante said.

Was he out?

"Of course," Infante said.

Cano and Girardi argued the call to no avail. Boone Logan replaced Kuroda and gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Avisail Garcia to make it 2-0.

"It's frustrating. I don't have a problem with Jeff's effort, I don't, because he hustled to get to the play. But in this day and age when we have instant replay available to us, it's got to change," Girardi said.

"These guys are under tremendous amounts of pressure. It is a tough call for him because the tag is underneath and it's hard for him to see. And it takes more time to argue and get upset than you get the call right. Too much is at stake," he said.

Girardi returned to lift Logan for Joba Chamberlain, and then he remained on the field to resume the argument. Red-faced with neck muscles bulging, Girardi could be seen shouting at Nelson, "You were right there. How could you miss it?" He was tossed by Nelson for his first postseason ejection.

Miguel Cabrera added a run-scoring single after the ejection.

Cano had no luck at the plate, either. The All-Star's slump extended to a record 26 hitless at-bats in a single postseason, breaking the mark of 24 set by Baltimore's Bobby Bonilla in 1996, STATS LLC said.

"I feel good at the plate," Cano said. "So, all I can do is stay positive and play good Tuesday."

There were many empty seats near the foul poles, and a subdued crowd spent much of the day venting its frustration, booing the punchless Yankees. The 47,082 in attendance reserved its biggest cheers early for Jeter, who broke his ankle in the last inning of the Game 1 loss.

"I don't know what's going on here, it seems like something is going on here," Tigers reliever Octavio Dotel said. "I mean, I don't want to wake them, I don't want them to get loud. I don't know what's going on but I like it."

The "Bleacher Creatures" included the captain in their roll call and fans let out a modest cheer pregame when Jeter was shown in video thanking fans on the scoreboard.

While the Yankees are headed to Detroit for what they hope will be three games, their captain will fly to Charlotte, N.C., to visit a foot specialist.

Jhonny Peralta singled in the sixth for the Tigers' first baserunner against Kuroda, who was pitching on short rest for the first time in his big league career. Delmon Young then gave Detroit the lead with a forceout grounder in the seventh, a night after putting the Tigers ahead in the 12th inning with a double.

Sanchez has had quite the success in the Bronx. He made his big league debut at the old Yankee Stadium when it was across the street, and pitched 5 2-3 shutout innings for Marlins in 2006. The only player to notch two hits against him in that game was Jeter.

Pitching for the first time in this 4-year-old ballpark ? and in front of his parents ? Sanchez limited the Yankees to just three hits and three walks, one an intentional pass to Ibanez.

When Ichiro Suzuki reached on Sanchez's fielding error to open the sixth and advanced to third with two outs, Peralta was there to bail out his pitcher with another nifty play, bare-handing a slow grounder for the third out.

Leyland took Valverde out of consideration for the closer role on Sunday. Valverde gave up a pair of two-run homers in the ninth inning Saturday night and also blew a save in the division series.

Former Yankees reliever Phil Coke pitched two innings for the save.

"Jose Valverde will be an important part of this club in this playoff or we are going to have a real tough time," Leyland said. "I just hope that the people back home are, like I said, not too short-minded because this guy has been fantastic, and is an important piece in the scenario, in my opinion."

Kuroda did all he could to help keep it close for the Yankees' anemic offense.

Curtis Granderson went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk and Alex Rodriguez singled in the ninth for his third hit of the postseason and finished 1 for 4. A-Rod is 0 for 18 with 12 Ks against right-handed pitchers in these playoffs. When he lined out to left field in the seventh fans gave a mock cheer.

"We've been through stretches like this all year," Rodriguez said. "It's been a very volatile stock market for us this year."

NOTES: Cabrera reached base in all 18 playoff games with Detroit, matching Hank Greenberg for the longest streak in team history.
